An entropy constrained linear program for the trip distribution problem is formulated and shown to have the ordinarJ doubly constrained gravity model as its solution. Entropy is here used as a measure of interactivity, which is constrained to be at a prescribed level. In this way the variation present in the reference trip matrix is preserved. (The properties of entropy as a dispersion measure are shortly discussed. ) The detailed mathematics of the optimal solutions as well as of sensitivity and duality are given.

The building of such analytical frameworks bridging the gaps between scientific traditions is a very ambitious task and has not been very successful up till now. In the past - in a static context - several such principles have been defined and advocated at the edge of the natural sciences on the one hand and social sciences (in particular, economics and geography) on the other hand, mainly based on the paradigm of 'social physics'. Some important contributions to the integration of the spatial systems sciences and physics can be found in gravity theory and entropy theory, which have formed the comer stones of interaction models in space. This book is about spatial interaction models. It describes the origin, the history and the correspondence of such models from a 'social physics' perspective. It is emphasized that such models need a clear behavioural underpinning as a sine qua non for a valid use in spatial systems analysis. This view also explains the use of micro-based disaggregate choice models as a tool for analyzing spatial systems. This is mainly analyzed in Part A of this book.

The aims of the Workshop were: 1. To discuss the state-of-the-art of nondifferentiable optimization (NDO), its origins and motivation; 2. To compare-various algorithms; 3. To evaluate existing mathematical approaches, their applications and potential; 4. To extend and deepen industrial and other applications of NDO. The following topics were considered in separate sessions: General motivation for research in NDO: nondifferentiability in applied problems, nondifferentiable mathematical models. Numerical methods for solving nondifferentiable optimization problems, numerical experiments, comparisons and software. Nondifferentiable analysis: various generalizations of the concept of subdifferen tials. Industrial and other applications. This volume contains selected papers presented at the Workshop.
