Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to convex analysis and some of its applications. It starts with basis theory, which is explained within the framework of finite-dimensional spaces. The only prerequisites are basic analysis and simple geometry. The second chapter presents some applications of convex analysis, including problems of linear programming, geometry, and approximation. Special attention is paid to applications of convex analysis to Kolmogorov-type inequalities for derivatives of functions is one variable. Chapter 3 collects some results on geometry and convex analysis in infinite-dimensional spaces. A comprehensive introduction written "for beginners" illustrates the fundamentals of convex analysis in finite-dimensional spaces. The book can be used for an advanced undergraduate or graduate level course on convex analysis and its applications. It is also suitable for independent study of this extremely important area of mathematics.

Book excerpt: The papers in this volume were presented at an International Symposium on Optimal Estimation in Approximation Theory which was held in Freudenstadt, Federal Republic of Germany, September 27-29, 1976. The symposium was sponsored by the IBM World Trade Europe/Middle East/Africa Corporation, Paris, and IBM Germany. On behalf of all the participants we wish to express our appreciation to the spon sors for their generous support. In the past few years the quantification of the notion of com plexity for various important computational procedures (e. g. multi plication of numbers or matrices) has been widely studied. Some such concepts are necessary ingredients in the quest for optimal, or nearly optimal, algorithms. The purpose of this symposium was to present recent results of similar character in the field or ap proximation theory, as well as to describe the algorithms currently being used in important areas of application of approximation theory such as: crystallography, data transmission systems, cartography, reconstruction from x-rays, planning of radiation treatment, optical perception, analysis of decay processes and inertial navigation system control. It was the hope of the organizers that this con frontation of theory and practice would be of benefit to both groups. Whatever success th•~ symposium had is due, in no small part, to the generous and wise scientific counsel of Professor Helmut Werner, to whom the organizers are most grateful. Dr. T. J. Rivlin Dr. P. Book excerpt: Moment Theory is not a new subject; however, in classical treatments, the ill-posedness of the problem is not taken into account - hence this monograph. Assuming a "true" solution to be uniquely determined by a sequence of moments (given as integrals) of which only finitely many are inaccurately given, the authors describe and analyze several regularization methods and derive stability estimates. Mathematically, the task often consists in the reconstruction of an analytic or harmonic function, as is natural from concrete applications discussed (e.g. inverse heat conduction problems, Cauchy's problem for the Laplace equation, gravimetry). The book can be used in a graduate or upper undergraduate course in Inverse Problems, or as supplementary reading for a course on Applied Partial Differential Equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for a wide range of readers, this book covers the main ideas of convex analysis and approximation theory. The author discusses the sources of these two trends in mathematical analysis, develops the main concepts and results, and mentions some beautiful theorems. The relationship of convex analysis to optimization problems, to the calculus of variations, to optimal control and to geometry is considered, and the evolution of the ideas underlying approximation theory, from its origins to the present day, is discussed. The book is addressed both to students who want to acquaint themselves with these trends and to lecturers in mathematical analysis, optimization and numerical methods, as well as to researchers in these fields who would like to tackle the topic as a whole and seek inspiration for its further development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides a comprehensive introduction to the classical geometric approximation theory, emphasizing important themes related to the theory including uniqueness, stability, and existence of elements of best approximation. It presents a number of fundamental results for both these and related problems, many of which appear for the first time in monograph form. The text also discusses the interrelations between main objects of geometric approximation theory, formulating a number of auxiliary problems for demonstration. Central ideas include the problems of existence and uniqueness of elements of best approximations as well as properties of sets including subspaces of polynomials and splines, classes of rational functions, and abstract subsets of normed linear spaces. The book begins with a brief introduction to geometric approximation theory, progressing through fundamental classical ideas and results as a basis for various approximation sets, suns, and Chebyshev systems. It concludes with a review of approximation by abstract sets and related problems, presenting novel results throughout the section. This text is suitable for both theoretical and applied viewpoints and especially researchers interested in advanced aspects of the field.

Book excerpt: In the Russian edition published in 1989, this book was called "Minimax Algorithms in Problems of Numerical Analysis". The new title is better related to the subject of the book and its style. The basis for every decision or inference concerning the ways to solve a given problem is the computa tion model. Thus, the computation model is the epicenter of any structure studied in the book. Algorithms are not constructed here, they are rather derived from computation models. Quality of an algorithm depends entirely on consistency of the model with the real-life problem. So, constructing a model is an art, deriving an algorithm is a science. We study only minimax or, in other words, worst-case computation models. However, one of the characteristic features of the book is a new approach to the notion of the worst-case conditions in dynamic processes. This approach leads to the concept of sequentially optimal algorithms, which play the central role in the book. In conclusion, I would like to express my gratitude to Prof. Dr. Heinz J. Skala and Dr. Sergei A. Orlovsky for encouraging translation of this book. I also greatly appreciate the highly professional job of Dr. Olga R. Chuyan who translated the book.

Computer methods in Applied Mathematics, too, are often based on statements and procedures of Mathematical Analysis. An important part of Mathematical Analysis is Complex Analysis because it has many applications in various branches of Mathematics. Since the field of Complex Analysis and its applications is a focal point in the Vietnamese research programme, the Hanoi University of Technology organized an International Conference on Finite or Infinite Dimensional Complex Analysis and Applications which took place in Hanoi from August 8 - 12, 2001. This conference th was the 9 one in a series of conferences which take place alternately in China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam each year. The first one took place th at Pusan University in Korea in 1993. The preceding 8 conference was th held in Shandong in China in August 2000. The 9 conference of the was the first one which took place above mentioned series of conferences in Vietnam. Present trends in Complex Analysis reflected in the present volume are mainly concentrated in the following four research directions: 1 Value distribution theory (including meromorphic funtions, mero morphic mappings, as well as p-adic functions over fields of finite or zero characteristic) and its applications, 2 Holomorphic functions in several (finitely or infinitely many) com plex variables, 3 Clifford Analysis, i.e., complex methods in higher-dimensional real Euclidian spaces, 4 Generalized analytic functions.
