Interest in the subject has grown, as space missions of increasing levels of sophistication, complexity, and scientific return - hardly imaginable in the 1960s - have been designed and flown. Although the basic tools of optimization theory remain an accepted canon, there has been a revolution in the manner in which they are applied and in the development of numerical optimization. This volume purposely includes a variety of both analytical and numerical approaches to trajectory optimization. The choice of authors has been guided by the editor's intention to assemble the most expert and active researchers in the various specialities presented. The authors were given considerable freedom to choose their subjects, and although this may yield a somewhat eclectic volume, it also yields chapters written with palpable enthusiasm and relevance to contemporary problems.

Book excerpt: The focus of this thesis is a two-phase method for the solution of trajectory op- timization problems where a low-thrust ion engine is used for a many-revolution transfer from a low-Earth orbit to a geostationary orbit. The problem is formulated using a perturbation model in the modified equinoctial element set. Perturbations considered are that of a low-thrust ion propulsion source and a truncated spherical harmonic model for Earth's gravity. Extra consideration for Earth's umbral and penumbral regions is also presented. The formulation for both phase one as an in- direct optimal control problem and phase two as a direct optimal control problem is provided as well as an explanation of the Legendre-Gauss-Radau pseudospectral method used to find numerical solutions for the chosen test case. The test case used within this thesis is based on a test case provided in the recent literature by Betts [1]. A simulation of the phase one problem, with an analysis on how to ob- tain the control curves is provided. All simulations were performed and solved in MATLAB using a nonlinear optimizer created by for this thesis and loosely based on code from Reference [3]. The formulation for the phase one problem has pro- duced encouraging results for future research testing the derived control laws for spacecraft steering provided. The phase two direct optimization problem provides additional future work.

The spacecraft is assumed to be solar-powered rocket that cannot provide thrust in the earth's shadow. Two time scales are used to calculate a minimum time trajectory. The fast timescale produces a control law which maximizes a change in orbital elements for a single orbit. The slow timescale incorporates the control law so that the final boundary conditions are met in minimum time. Minimum transfer times are determined between winter and summer. Keywords: Low thrust; Electric propulsion; Orbit transfer; Solar propulsion; Transfer trajectories. (jhd).

Book excerpt: This report presents two numerical methods considered for the computation of fuel-optimal, low-thrust orbit transfers in large numbers of burns. The origins of these methods are observations made with the extremal solutions of transfers in small numbers of burns; there seems to exist a trend such that the longer the time allowed to perform an optimal transfer the less fuel that is used. These longer transfers are obviously of interest since they require a motor of low thrust; however, we also find a trend that the longer the time allowed to perform the optimal transfer the more burns are required to satisfy optimality. Unfortunately, this usually increases the difficulty of computation. Both of the methods described use small-numbered burn solutions to determine solutions in large numbers of burns. One method is a homotopy method that corrects for problems that arise when a solution requires a new burn or coast arc for optimality. The other method is to simply patch together long transfers from smaller ones. An orbit correction problem is solved to develop this method. This method may also lead to a good guidance law for transfer orbits with long transfer times. Chuang, C.-H. Unspecified Center NAG8-921...

Book excerpt: Low thrust electric propulsion systems are becoming sufficiently mature to consider their use as primary propulsion for orbital transfer in place of high thrust chemical systems. Instead of facing an either/or situation, it may be advantageous to use both types. This effort demonstrates a technique for finding orbital transfer strategies that use both high and low thrust propulsion systems and which result in optimal tradeoffs of the performance parameters cost of orbit insertion, total orbit transfer time, and available spacecraft mass at final orbit. These performance parameters are calculated as a function of the fraction of orbit transfer from Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (GEO) provided by electric propulsion. Utility analysis is used to analyze each performance parameter and compute a total utility score for each orbit insertion strategy examined. Results from a variety of example space mission profiles yielded optimal orbit insertion strategies requiring both chemical and electric propulsion to provide a fraction of the LEO to GEO orbit transfer.

Book excerpt: For many optimal transfer problems it is reasonable to expect that the minimum time solution is also the minimum fuel solution. However, if one allows the propulsion system to be turned off and back on, it is clear that these two solutions may differ. In general, high thrust transfers resemble the well known impulsive transfers where the burn arcs are of very short duration. The low and medium thrust transfers differ in that their thrust acceleration levels yield longer burn arcs and thus will require more revolutions. In this research, we considered two approaches for solving this problem: a powered flight guidance algorithm previously developed for higher thrust transfers was modified and an 'averaging technique' was investigated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research work presents methods and techniques for multi-fidelity global optimisation of low-thrust trajectories. In the early stages of the definition of a space mission, tools that can provide a fast and preliminary estimation of the cost of low-thrust transfers are required; a more accurate optimisation process of the trajectories is left for subsequent phases. Therefore, models of different levels of fidelity are needed, based on the current phase of the design and on the desired accuracy. An efficient global optimisation algorithm has then to be used in conjunction with these models, in order to identify the global optimal solution to a given problem. The development of multi-fidelity methods, of an efficient global optimisation algorithm and their application for the solution of low-thrust global optimisation problems, are addressed in this thesis. The lower fidelity models consist of analytical laws for the cost of low-thrust transfers. Higher fidelity innovative laws for transfers between Earth's orbits have been derived. Moreover, a set of analytical equations for the motion of the spacecraft subject to low-thrust acceleration and orbital perturbations is presented. These models are used in conjunction with a novel adaptive multi-population global optimisation algorithm, validated using several test functions and real world problems. To allow for the use of the global solver with higher fidelity, and therefore computationally more expensive models, the use of surrogate model for low-thrust transfer is proposed. Various applications are presented where these tools and methods are successfully applied, and that represent an original scientific contribution. Missions have been designed to deorbit objects from Low Earth Orbit and deploy a constellation in Medium Earth Orbit. The optimisation of a transfer from Geostationary Transfer Orbit to Geosynchronous Orbit is also presented. Interplanetary applications include missions to visit the asteroids of the inner solar system and of the main belt.

Key results obtained in this study include not only the number of switches in the optimized thrust, but also the total impulse. In particular, as the maximum allowable thrust acceleration decreases, it is found that the total impulse is lower when compared with a previous study where a burn-off-burn thrusting structure was assumed a priori. For each type of transfer, a particular value of maximum allowable thrust acceleration is chosen to highlight in more detail the key features of the optimal solutions. The results of this study provide improved insight into the optimal thrusting structure required in order to achieve each type of orbital transfer relative to a previous study on a similar problem.

Book excerpt: All-electric satellites are gaining favor among the manufacturers and operators of satellites in Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) due to cost saving potential. These satellites have the capability of performing all propulsive tasks with electric propulsion including transfer to GEO. Although fuel-efficient, electric thrusters lead to long transfer, during which the health and the usability of spacecraft is affected due to its exposure to hazardous space radiation in the Van Allen belts. Hence, determining electric orbit-raising trajectory that minimize transfer time is crucial for all-electric satellite operation. This thesis proposes a novel method to determine minimum-time orbit-raising trajectory by blending the ideas of direct optimization and guidance-like trajectory optimization schemes. The proposed methodology is applicable for both planar and non-planar transfers and for transfers starting from arbitrary circular and elliptic orbits. Therefore, it can be used for rapidly analyzing various orbit-raising mission scenarios. The methodology utilizes the variational equations of motion of the satellite in the context of the two-body problem by considering the low-thrust of an electric engine as a perturbing force. The no-thrust condition due to Earth's shadow is also considered. The proposed methodology breaks the overall optimization problem into multiple sub-problems and each sub-problem minimizes a desired objective over the sun-lit part of the trajectory. Two different objective types are considered. Type I transfers minimize the deviation of the total energy and eccentricity of final position from the GEO, while type II transfers minimize the deviation of total energy and angular momentum. Using the developed tool, several mission scenarios are analyzed including, a new type of mission scenarios, in which more than one thruster type are used for the transfer. The thesis presents the result for all studied scenarios and compares the performance of Type I and Type II transfers.

Book excerpt: Minimum fuel continuous low thrust orbit transfer is an optimal control problem which requires the application of iterative numerical methods to solve the resulting two point boundary value problem. A combination gradient- neighboring extremal algorithm gives accurate results when both the initial and terminal orbits are coplanar. These results are then used to extend the problem to include out-of-plane transfers between orbits of widely varying inclination. Control histories, in terms of thrust direction, are plotted as a function of time for both coplanar and non-coplanar transfers. Steering programs for coplanar transfers are characterized by a rapid thrust reversal which is dependent on eccentricity for the time of its occurrence. In the latter case, out-of-plane thrusting is primarily a function of the inclination change between orbits. On the basis of these results, the particular numerical approach used provides an effective method for generating optimal low thrust orbital transfer guidance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytic solution to the optimal low thrust problem is developed using a first-order perturbation approach for planar orbit transfers. This solution is verified by comparison with the solution obtained by integrating the equations of motion. For low vehicle accelerations the analytic solution yields results quite close to those obtained by the integrated solution. At higher acceleration levels, however, the analytic solution diverges from the integrated solution. For very low acceleration levels the analytic solution approachs the limiting case of the infinitesimally low thrust spiral solution. Keywords include: Low thrust; Orbit transfer; Perturbation; Optimization.
