Download or read book Society - Water - Technology written by Reinhard F. Hüttl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-02 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the results of the Interdisciplinary Research Group "Society – Water – Technology" of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. It describes interdisciplinary evaluation criteria for major water engineering projects (MWEPs) and portrays an application to the Lower Jordan Valley (Middle East) and the Fergana Valley (Central Asia). Both areas are characterised by transboundary conflicts, by challenges due to demographic and climate change and by political and societal pressures. Based on the findings, the book provides recommendations for science and political decisions makers as well as for international financing institutions. In addition, it outlines research gaps from an interdisciplinary perspective. In the past, MWEPs have been used as an instrument to cope with the demands of growing populations and to enhance development progress. Experiences with MWEPs have shown that a purely technical approach has not always brought about the desired results. In many cases, MWEPs have even resulted in negative implications for society and environment. Therefore, improved management strategies and enhanced technologies for a sustainable water resource management system are a prerequisite to meet present and future challenges. And, moreover, the continuous evaluation and optimisation of these measures is, likewise, a must.

Book Synopsis The Water of the Jordan Valley by : Heinz Hötzl
Download or read book The Water of the Jordan Valley written by Heinz Hötzl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-09-27 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural saline water, waste water, and irrigation return flow endanger the groundwater aquifers in the Rift. In the long run this will ruin the socio-economic backbone of the settlements in the area. Sustainability of the water resources will only be achieved when the process of water replenishment and its underground flow is understood and water extraction is regionally controlled. Rare earth element and spider patterns are presented as new tools for studying the hydrology. Progress in 3-D modelling of groundwater flow proved successfully the impact of pumping on the surroundings of wells and overexploitation of aquifers.
Book Synopsis Agricultural Water Management by : National Research Council
Download or read book Agricultural Water Management written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-03-20 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains a collection of papers from a workshopâ€"Strengthening Science-Based Decision-Making for Sustainable Management of Scarce Water Resources for Agricultural Production, held in Tunisia. Participants, including scientists, decision makers, representatives of non-profit organizations, and a farmer, came from the United States and several countries in North Africa and the Middle East. The papers examined constraints to agricultural production as it relates to water scarcity; focusing on 1) the state of the science regarding water management for agricultural purposes in the Middle East and North Africa 2) how science can be applied to better manage existing water supplies to optimize the domestic production of food and fiber. The cross-cutting themes of the workshop were the elements or principles of science-based decision making, the role of the scientific community in ensuring that science is an integral part of the decision making process, and ways to improve communications between scientists and decision makers.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Irrigation Hydrology and Management by : Saeid Eslamian
Download or read book Handbook of Irrigation Hydrology and Management written by Saeid Eslamian and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever-increasing population growth has caused a proportional increased demand for water, and existing water sources are depleting day by day. Moreover, with the impact of climate change, the rates of rainfall in many regions have experienced a higher degree of variability. In many cities, government utilities have been struggling to maintain sufficient water for the residents and other users. The Handbook of Irrigation Hydrology and Management: Irrigation Methods examines and analyzes irrigated ecosystems in which water storage, applications, or drainage volumes are artificially controlled in the landscape and the spatial domain of processes varies from micrometers to tens of kilometers, while the temporal domain spans from seconds to centuries. The continuum science of irrigation hydrology includes the surface, subsurface (unsaturated and groundwater systems), atmospheric, and plant subsystems. Further, the book addresses the best practices for various types of irrigation methods including pressure, smart, surface, and subsurface, and presents solutions for water scarcity and soil salinity in irrigation. Features: Offers water-saving strategies to increase the judicious use of scarce water resources Presents strategies to maximize agricultural yield per unit of water used for different regions Compares irrigation methods to offset changing weather patterns and impacts of climate change
Book Synopsis Tools for Drought Mitigation in Mediterranean Regions by : Giuseppe Rossi
Download or read book Tools for Drought Mitigation in Mediterranean Regions written by Giuseppe Rossi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant vulnerability of water systems to drought is a common issue of water resources management in Mediterranean regions. This is due both to the increasing occurrence and severity of drought events and to the growing demand for municipal, tourist, and agricultural uses. The INCO-DC project entitled "A Decision Support System for Mitigation of Drought Impacts in the Mediterranean Regions" (DSS DROUGHT) addresses this issue, contributing to an improved management of water supply systems for irrigation, which represents the most consumptive sector of water resources uses in the Mediterranean region. In order to develop a comprehensive approach toward improved operation of irrigation systems under drought conditions, the project was developed around the following five main, strictly interconnected tasks: Identification of drought characteristics at a site and over a region Modelling irrigation management under conditions of water scarcity Modelling operation of water supply systems under drought conditions Integration of the developed methodologies within a Decision Support System software package Definition of requisites for Drought Watch Systems The research resulted in an advancement of knowledge through in-depth analysis of innovative methodologies, the development of tools to help decision-makers in coping with droughts through the implementation of the developed procedures in software packages, and the application of these tools to the case-studies identified by partners in their countries.
Book Synopsis Optimal Irrigation Decisions with Limited Water by : Herbert Gregory Blank
Download or read book Optimal Irrigation Decisions with Limited Water written by Herbert Gregory Blank and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multiple crop irrigation planning model was developed to determine crop acreages and irrigation timings and amounts under two objectives. The objectives were maximization of expected return and minimization of variance due to random precipitacion. The model is applied to a representative farm in the irrigated area near Ft. Morgan, Colorado. Recent experimental data from field trials on corn at colorado State University were used. An evapotranspiration ET prediction model was developed which reconstruced soil moisture over the season for varying irrigation treatments. Regression analysis was used to determine parameters in production functions relating ET in various time periods to yields. An additive and a multiplicative relation were tested. A dynamic programming model was developed which determined optimal amounts of irrigation at pre-scheduled times for a single crop. The adopted ET prediction model and first the multiplicative and then the additive production function were incorporated into this program. Initiallys the problem is solved with unlimited water available at a pre-determined price. The model is solved again with waater limited in various time periods. The results of this program simulate the situation when the crop competes with other crops for the limeted water supply. Secondary datea were used to determine timings and amounts of irrigation water for various production levels of the other crops considered in the study. The multiple crop case incorporates the results of the single crop model.(...).
