Book excerpt: Computers are widely used for the analysis, design, and operation of water resource projects. This gives accurate results, allowing the analysis of complex systems which may not have been possible otherwise, and the investigation and comparison of several different alternatives in a short time, thereby reducing the project costs, optimizing design, and efficient utilization of resources. This volume compiles an edited version of the lecture notes specially prepared by 14 well-known European and North American researchers. Part I deals with free-surface flows. Governing equations are derived and their solution by the finite-difference, finite-element, and boundary-integral methods are discussed. Then, turbulence models, three-dimensional models, dam-break flow models, sediment transport models, and flood routing models are presented. Part II is related to the modeling of steady and transient pressurized flows. Governing equations for both single and two-component flows are derived and numerical methods for their solution are presented. The modeling of water quality in pipe networks, of cooling water systems, and slow and rapid transients is then discussed.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive methodology for the design of municipal water distribution systems that explicitly incorporates reliability and performance into the system design is developed. The complex design problem is decomposed within the context of a three-level hierarchically integrated system of models. The first and second level models combine to select the links in the distribution system layout. The third level model accomplishes the detailed system design for the layout from the upper level models. Two alternative first level models, a shortest path tree and a nonlinear programming model, are developed to select the minimum cost tree layout. Two second level, complementary 0-1 integer programming models are developed to select the loop-forming links for the minimum cost tree layout. The third level nonlinear programming model optimizes the detailed distribution system design (link diameters, pump capacities, elevated storage heights, and valve resistance) of the resulting network layout with respect to distribution system performance under expected emergency loading conditions (fire demand, broken links, pump outage). This detailed design is performed subject to satisfying steady state conditions, minimum performance levels under normal loading conditions, and maximum budget level. The methodology is applied to the design of a real life water distribution system. (Author).

Book excerpt: The burdensome capital cost of urban water distribution systems demands the use of efficient optimization methods capable of finding a relatively inexpensive design that guarantees a minimum functionality under all conditions of operation. The combinatorial and nonlinear nature of the optimization problem involved accepts no definitive method of solution. Adaptive search methods are well fitted for this type of problem (to which more formal methods cannot be applied), but their computational requirements demand the development and implementation of additional heuristics to find a satisfactory solution. This work seeks to employ adaptive search methods to enhance the search process used to find the optimal design of any water distribution system. A first study presented here introduces post-optimization heuristics that analyze the best design obtained by a genetic algorithm--arguably the most popular adaptive search method--and perform an ordered local search to maximize further cost savings. When used to analyze the best design found by a genetic algorithm, the proposed post-optimization heuristics method successfully achieved additional cost savings that the genetic algorithm failed to detect after an exhaustive search. The second study herein explores various ways to improve artificial neural networks employed as fast estimators of computationally intensive constraints. The study presents a new methodology for generating any large set of water supply networks to be used for the training of artificial neural networks. This dataset incorporates several distribution networks in the vicinity of the search space in which the genetic algorithm is expected to focus its search. The incorporation of these networks improved the accuracy of artificial neural networks trained with such a dataset. These neural networks consistently showed a lower margin of error than their counterparts trained with conventional training datasets populated by randomly generated distribution networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Water distribution system connects consumers to sources of water, using hydraulic components, such as pipes, valves, and reservoirs. The engineer faced with the design of such a system, or of additions to an existing system, has to select the sizes of its components. Also he has to consider the way in which the operational components, pumps and valves, will be used to supply the required demands with adequate pressures. The network has to perform adequately under varying demand loads, hydraulic and operational conditions. Operational decisions for these loads are essentially part of the design process, since one cannot separate the so-called design decisions, i.e. the sizing of components, from the operational decisions; they are two inseparable parts of one problem. This work has therefore presented a method for optimizing the design of a water distribution network system using pipe diameter as decision variable under the required demand loading and hydraulic conditions. It has been established that increasing the minimum pressure will lead to the reduction in the required pipe diameter which will in turn reduce the cost of installation. The modelling approach developed can be used by engineers and planners to obtain economical pipe sizes for a network designed to serve newly planned layouts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference provides a forum for exchange of technical and operational information across a wide range of pipeline activities. Various supply and distribution industries, and their service organisations, have traditionally approached pipeline systems from many different perspec tives. The organisers believe that significant benefits can be gained by enabling representatives from the oil, gas, water, chemical, power and related industries to present their latest ideas and methods. An awareness of these alternative methodologies and technologies should result in a more unified and coherent approach to each individual type of pipeline system. The overall theme of the conference is the optimisation of pipeline systems, through design analysis, component specification, operational strategies and performance evaluation, in order to minimise both risk and the lifetime cost of ownership. Wherever possible emphasis is given to important developing technologies with special consideration to use of computational equipment and methods. SYSTEMS APPROACH For the major activities of design, operation and performance; pipeline systems can be conveniently classified in terms of the systetV: components, constraints and objectives. These are described using fluid terminology, to suit' the majority of conference participants, as given below: Components consist of pumps and valves (controls), pipe networks (transmission and distribu tion), reservoirs (storage) and consumer demands (disturbances). The arrangement of these components, to form the system, must take into account the conflicting requirements of structural, hydraulic, and cost, performance.

Book excerpt: This book discusses the application of metaheuristic algorithms in a number of important optimization problems in civil engineering. Advances in civil engineering technologies require greater accuracy, efficiency and speed in terms of the analysis and design of the corresponding systems. As such, it is not surprising that novel methods have been developed for the optimal design of real-world systems and models with complex configurations and large numbers of elements. This book is intended for scientists, engineers and students wishing to explore the potential of newly developed metaheuristics in practical problems. It presents concepts that are not only applicable to civil engineering problems, but can also used for optimizing problems related to mechanical, electrical, and industrial engineering. It is an essential resource for civil, mechanical and electrical engineers who use optimization methods for design, as well as for students and researchers interested in structural optimization.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the complexities in designing WDN is evaluation of network performance. The accurate network performance measures such as reliability or failure tolerance are very time consuming calculations, thus surrogate measures are used for water distribution network (WDN) design optimization. Entropy is particularly advantageous since it involves only the flow in the pipe and the demands at the nodes. This thesis developed efficient new computational methods based on the maximum entropy formalism for the optimization of water distribution systems. Thus the maximum entropy based design approach has been extended here to include multiple operation conditions. Also, the path-related properties of the flow entropy have been exploited to develop a new self-adaptive approach for solution space reduction in multiobjective evolutionary optimization of water distribution systems that resulted in a significant reduction in the number of function evaluations required to find optimal and near optimal solutions. The novelty and originality of the current research are presented next. A new penalty-free multi-objective evolutionary optimization approach for the design of WDNs has been developed. It combines genetic algorithm with least cost design and maximum entropy. The approach can handle single operating conditions (SOC) as well as multiple operating conditions (MOC) for any given network. Previously, most of the work has been done for single loading patterns and it was assumed that nodal demands are constant. In reality nodal demand vary over the time so network designed to satisfy one operating condition might not be able to satisfy other loading patterns (i.e. pressure constraints might not be meet). The model has been applied to three well known water distribution networks. The approach has also been implemented on a large real-world network in the literature. Three different methods of designing for multiple loading patterns were investigated. Extensive testing proved that MOC outperform SOC in terms of hydraulic feasibility, pipe size distribution and reliability. The approach is computationally efficient and robust. The above mentioned penalty-free approach has been extended to form a module that would improve the convergence criteria of the GA by reducing its search space. For large real-world network GA might require extremely large number of function evaluations which could lead to delayed convergence. By reducing the search space, the GA's effectiveness and efficiency will increase as the algorithm will identify the solutions in smaller number of function evaluations. The search space reduction method presented herein is based on entropy and uses the importance of every path through network, which is an inherent property of the entropy function. The developed algorithm is dynamic, self-adaptive and does not require pre-defining the reduced sets of candidate diameters for each pipe. The method has been applied to a large network from the literature. Two cases were studied, one based on full search space and one for reduce search space (RSS) approach. Rapid stabilization was observed for the results obtained using RSS.

Book excerpt: "This report develops a mathematical model for the optimal design of branched water distribution networks with staged construction to meet capacity expansion requirements. The mathematical model considers capacity expansion of the network by either replacing or paralleling existing pipe with new pipe. The use of the model is demonstated in the design of the water supply system for a city in a developing country which was previously designed by a combination of computer and hand calculation. A comparative analysis of the two designs is made in the report."--leaf ii
