The controller is based on previous adaptive control research conducted at Wichita State University (WSU) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ames Research Center. The control system is designed for longitudinal control of a Beech Bonanza given the commands of pitch rate and airspeed. The structure of the controller includes a first-order model follower, proportional-integral (PI) controller, inverse controller, and adaptation element. Two adaptation methods were considered, the WSU-developed Adaptive Bias Corrector (ABC) and the Optimal Control Modification (OCM). The ABC is used with two error schemes, adapting to the modeling-error and the tracking-error. Three variations of the OCM are presented, which differ in the parameterization of the adaptive signal. The first is called OCM-Linear (OCM-L), where the adaptive signal is linearly related to the states. The second variation is OCM-Bias (OCM-B), which only includes a bias term. The third is the OCM-Linear and Bias (OCM-LB), a combination of the previous two variations. To design the controllers, varied values of the PI gains and adaptive gains were evaluated based on time response tracking of a pitch doublet and time delay margin. The time delay margin is based on error metrics developed at NASA Ames. Of the five controllers presented, the OCM-L and ABC with tracking-error adaptation performed the best. The ABC with modeling-error adaptation did not track the pitch doublet. The OCM-B and OCM-LB are good controllers but had worse performance than OCM-Linear in tracking and time delay margin, respectively.

This updated text covers flight control systems, flight dynamics, aircraft modeling, and flight simulation from both classical design and modern perspectives, as well as two new chapters on the modeling, simulation, and adaptive control of unmanned aerial vehicles. With detailed examples, including relevant MATLAB calculations and FORTRAN codes, this approachable yet detailed reference also provides access to supplementary materials, including chapter problems and an instructor's solution manual. Aircraft control, as a subject area, combines an understanding of aerodynamics with knowledge of the physical systems of an aircraft. The ability to analyze the performance of an aircraft both in the real world and in computer-simulated flight is essential to maintaining proper control and function of the aircraft. Keeping up with the skills necessary to perform this analysis is critical for you to thrive in the aircraft control field. Explore a steadily progressing list of topics, including equations of motion and aerodynamics, classical controls, and more advanced control methods Consider detailed control design examples using computer numerical tools and simulation examples Understand control design methods as they are applied to aircraft nonlinear math models Access updated content about unmanned aircraft (UAVs) Aircraft Control and Simulation: Dynamics, Controls Design, and Autonomous Systems, Third Edition is an essential reference for engineers and designers involved in the development of aircraft and aerospace systems and computer-based flight simulations, as well as upper-level undergraduate and graduate students studying mechanical and aerospace engineering.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Oata Analysis and Synthesis (CINOAS) * at Purdue. University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 33 (thesis year 1988) a total of 13,273 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 1 85 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 33 reports theses submitted in 1988, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: Cooperative, collaborating autonomous systems are at the forefront of research efforts in numerous disciplines across the applied sciences. There is constant progress in solution techniques for these systems. However, despite this progress, cooperating systems have continued to be extremely difficult to model, analyze, and solve. Theoretical results are very difficult to come by. Each year, the International Conference on Cooperative Control and Optimization (CCO) brings together top researchers from around the world to present new, cutting-edge, ideas, theories, applications, and advances in the fields of autonomous agents, cooperative systems, control theory, information flow, and optimization. The works in this volume are a result of invited papers and selected presentations at the Eighth Annual International Conference on Cooperative Control and Optimization, held in Gainesville, Florida, January 30 – February 1, 2008.

Book excerpt: This thesis examines the use of the mixed H2/Microns optimal control synthesis method in the design of a flight control system for the lateral/directional axes of the F-16 Variable Stability In-Flight Simulator Test Aircraft (VISTA). The method is designed to minimize the H2 norm (two-norm) for a given value of microns. This should provide adequate noise and disturbance rejection while maintaining robustness against several types of uncertainties in the system. This thesis finds that, for this problem, the two-norm is not an accurate representation of the outputs of interest. When the two-norm is broken up into its constituent parts an appropriate solution can be found. This thesis also finds that it is possible to use an H2 controller which is destabilizing to the evaluation model as the starting point in the mixed H2/IL curve and still get an acceptable answer. A numerical approach was used, utilizing a recently improved computer algorithm.

Book excerpt: This thesis addresses the application issues raised implementing flight control designs derived from optimal control theory and the challenges in obtaining acceptable handling qualities when using these techniques. Using the USAF TPS FCS project as the controller architecture, four controllers were designed using classical methods, and H2, H3, and mixed H2/H optimal control theory. These designs were implemented in the Calspan VSS II Learjet, simulating unstable aircraft longitudinal dynamics and a limited handling qualities flight test evaluation was performed. The design phase found the optimal control techniques, as applied, difficult to design to handling qualities specifications. The H2, H3 and mixed H2/H controllers were unstable and often contained high frequency poles, which were difficult to implement. The flight test rated the designs acceptable on approach, but no handling qualities level for approach was determined.
