Book excerpt: This book collects most of the talks and poster presentations presented at the "Optical Turbulence ? Astronomy meets Meteorology" international conference held on 15?18 September, 2008 at Nymphes Bay, Alghero, Sardinia, Italy. The meeting aimed to deal with one of the major causes of wavefront perturbations limiting the astronomical high-angular-resolution observations from the ground. The uniqueness of this meeting has been the effort to attack this topic in a synergic and multidisciplinary approach promoting constructive discussions between the actors of this science ? the astronomers, meteorologists, physicists of the atmosphere and the experts in adaptive optics and interferometry techniques whose main goal is to correct, in real-time, the wavefront perturbations induced by atmospheric turbulence to restore at the telescope foci the best available image quality.

Book excerpt: This report is a tutorial on the effects of atmospheric turbulence upon systems which rely upon the propagation of LASER beams. In addition to providing a simplified presentation of turbulence theory and optical effects, it describes the state of the art of the new technique of radiosonde estimation of index of refraction fluctuations. Suggestions are given for future research which will help to answer current Air Force needs. The feasibility of some laser systems will depend upon the value of r0, the coherence length (which is related to “C2n” which in turn is related to the degree of turbulence). At present, the statistics of “r0” are inadequate.

Book excerpt: Five different instruments were used in multiple experiments to measure atmospheric turbulence in the form of the refractive structure constant, C sub n squared. These included UHF radar, optical scintillometer, modified radiosondes, AFGL thermosondes, and aircraft micro-thermal measurements. Described here are the radiosonde and thermosonde electronics and their calibrations. The data reduction scheme is described and a brief program description is given. Although the different instruments gave measurements somewhat separated in space and time, first results show good agreement between the radar, scintillometer, and thermosonde measurements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the practical aspects of atmospheric optical communication and light detection and ranging (LIDAR), Applied Aspects of Optical Communication and LIDAR details the role of atmospheric structures in propagation phenomena that influence the transmission of optical signals through perturbed atmospheric communication channels. It examines numerous situations in over-the-terrain atmospheric communication channels, including the effects of natural phenomena and the corresponding features (turbulences and hydrometeors) on optical ray propagation. Bridging the gap between the parameters of optical communication links and signal information data streams, this concise reference addresses line-of-sight (LOS) as well as obstructive non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation conditions. It also: Details the main characteristics of optical communication channels Introduces the quasi-regular gaseous atmosphere Describes numerous situations in the atmospheric communication channel Explains the main characteristics of optical communication channels Complete with parameters for information data streams, the text also provides time-saving suggestions for determining which optical devices will work best for minimizing the deleterious effects of natural atmospheric phenomena. Whether you’re a researcher, an engineer, or student—this book provides you with the practical understanding required to use LIDAR to investigate all forms of atmospheric phenomena and to learn how to accurately predict primary parameters of atmospheric optical channels.

Atmospheric turbulence causes fluctuations in both the intensity and the phase of the beam and still must be understood and modelized for applications in photonics or environmental metrology. The future of free-space optical (FSO) communication through atmospheric turbulence channels is especially of interest and research on high bit-rate communications attracts more and more interest as an alternative to radio links because of bandwidth, spectrum, and security issues. Some of the current solutions for improving FSO communications are presented in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wave or weak turbulence is a branch of science concerned with the evolution of random wave fields of all kinds and on all scales, from waves in galaxies to capillary waves on water surface, from waves in nonlinear optics to quantum fluids. In spite of the enormous diversity of wave fields in nature, there is a common conceptual and mathematical core which allows to describe the processes of random wave interactions within the same conceptual paradigm, and in the same language. The development of this core and its links with the applications is the essence of wave turbulence science (WT) which is an established integral part of nonlinear science. The book comprising seven reviews aims at discussing new challenges in WT and perspectives of its development. A special emphasis is made upon the links between the theory and experiment. Each of the reviews is devoted to a particular field of application (there is no overlap), or a novel approach or idea. The reviews cover a variety of applications of WT, including water waves, optical fibers, WT experiments on a metal plate and observations of astrophysical WT.
