Book excerpt: Reflectance spectra were measured in the UV, VIS, and/or IR for several natural minerals and for several aqueous solutions of ZnCl2 and H3P04. Complex refractive indices were determined for most of these materials by applying Kramers-Kronig methods to the reflectance spectra. Powders of some of the natural minerals were pressed in to pellets in order to obtain the reflectance spectra. Gypsum was studied in the crystalline form, the powder-pellet form, and by transmittance spectra through KBr pellets containing minute quantities of gypsum. A method was developed for obtaining complex refractive indices from reflectance spectra of the pellets and transmittance spectra of the powder/KBr pellet. The best specularly reflecting pellets were formed from powders of smaller particle size and with forces of from 14 to 16 tons on the 13 mm dia circular face of the pellet. The complex refractive indices of water were also updated by applying Kramers-Kronig methods to a new composite k spectrum in order to determine the n spectrum. (Author).

This report covers the work done at the Univ. of Missouri-Rolla. The spectral range of the measurements covered from the millimeter to the ultraviolet. The millimeter and submillimeter (far infrared) measurements were made on the Rolla Campus and the infrared, visible and ultraviolet measurements were made on the Kansas City Campus. This wide spectral range means that Kramers-Kronig analyses can be made with better precision than when reflectance data is available only over a limited spectral range. The construction of a homodyning interferometer that is capable of measuring small (diameter approximately 1 cm) samples at millimeter wavelengths and samples that are highly absorbing. To our knowledge no other instruments with this capability exist. The measurement of refractive indices of gypsum, both as a single crystal and as a powder in the far and near infrared for use as a standard. The measurement of several types of graphite. We have found that Dixon 200-10 shows a large positive real part of the dielectric constant at low frequencies. This contradicts the usual free electron picture for graphite at low frequencies. Keywords: Minerals, Metals, Ultraviolet radiation, Infrared radiation, Liquids, Optical properties, Single crystals, Powders. (edc).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the successor to A practical introduction to optical mineralogy, which was written in the early 1980s, and published by George Allen & Unwin in 1985. Our intention, once again, is to introduce the student of geology to the microscopic examination of minerals, by both transmitted and reflected light. These techniques should be mastered by students early in their careers, and this text has been proposed in the full awareness that it will be used as a laboratory handbook, serving as a quick reference to the properties of minerals. However, care has been taken to present a systematic explanation of the use of the microscope, as well as to include an extended explanation of the theoretical aspects of optical crystallography in transmitted light. The book is therefore intended as a serious text that introduces the study of minerals under the microscope to the intending honours student of geology, as well as providing information for the novice or interested layman.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microscopy is a servant of all the sciences, and the microscopic examina tion of minerals is an important technique which should be mastered by all students of geology early in their careers. Advanced modern text books on both optics and mineralogy are available, and our intention is not that this new textbook should replace these but that it should serve as an introductory text or a first stepping-stone to the study of optical mineralogy. The present text has been written with full awareness that it will probably be used as a laboratory handbook, serving as a quick reference to the properties of minerals, but nevertheless care has been taken to present a systematic explanation of the use of the microscope as well as theoretical aspects of optical mineralogy. The book is therefore suitable for the novice either studying as an individual or participating in classwork. Both transmitted-light microscopy and reflected-light microscopy are dealt with, the former involving examination of transparent minerals in thin section and the latter involving examination of opaque minerals in polished section. Reflected-light microscopy is increasing in importance in undergraduate courses on ore mineralisation, but the main reason for combining the two aspects of microscopy is that it is no longer acceptable to neglect opaque minerals in the systematic petrographic study of rocks. Dual purpose microscopes incorporating transmitted- and reflected-light modes are readily available, and these are ideal for the study of polished thin sections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ``Optical Properties of Mixed Crystals'' is concerned with the description of optical processes in substitutionally disordered semiconductors and insulators which can be basically described through their elementary excitations. Two of the chapters relate to the phonon response including the effect of side bands on electron transitions. Two relate to electronic spectra, one on photoelectron spectroscopy and the other on excitons. A further chapter deals with magnons in magnetic crystals and a final chapter is related to fluctuations and band edge effects. Each chapter deals with a specific class of excitation, but the book makes it clear that the fundamental structure of the excitation spectra, including band formation, band tailing and localisation is common to every type of excitation. The volume shows how some basic concepts and ideas can be widely applied to bring coherence and understanding to a diverse area of solid state physics. It therefore provides an up-to-date summary of the experimental and theoretical situation in an important and rapidly developing field and brings together for the first time a discussion of the many different types of spectra which appear in mixed crystals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of reflection and transmission measurements on four sheet silicate mica minerals, evaporated carbon films and some amino-acid specimens for the spectral region 4ev to 13.5ev are reported. For the mica minerals studied, namely muscovite, natural phlogopite, Motite and synthetic fluorphlogopite, a close similarity in their ultraviolet optical properties has been observed and has been attributed to absorptions occurring within the silicate framework upon which these minerals are based. Data for fused quartz are presented to substantiate 'this vie\v. A little used, model fitting method of reflectance data analysis is described which has allowed a satisfactory determination of the optical and dielectric constants to be made. The results of this analysis are compared with values determined from a Kramers-KrBnig analysis of the characteristic electron energy loss spectra given by thin cleavage flakes taken from the bulk specimens used in the optical studies. For evaporated carbon the results of reflection and transmission measurements indicate a similarity in the optical properties of the films prepared and those of graphite and glassy carbon. Difficulties in characterising, in detail, the structure of the specimens studied has made an interpretation of the observed optical spectra difficult and suggestions are given which should clarify some of the issues raised in the present study.
