Book excerpt: Hydrogenated amorphous silicon-germanium alloy thin films (a-SiGe:H) of various germanium concentrations, are potential candidates meeting the requirements of high efficiency stacked solar cells and optoelectronic devices where a certain bandgap is necessary. In this thesis to obtain reliable information about the native and light induced defect states present in a-SiGe:H alloy thin films of various germanium concentrations SSPC, DBP, transmission spectroscopy and PDS techniques have been used. A procedure based on Ritter Weiser optical formulation has been applied to calculate fringe free absolute absorption coefficient spectra of a-SiGe:H alloy thin films of various Ge% from the yield DBP and simultaneously measured transmission signals for the first time. The results have been compared with those independently measured by PDS method. In the annealed state the effects of native defect states in a-SiGe:H alloy thin films of various Ge% have been investigated. For the a-SiGe:H alloy films with Ge concentration in the range of 10% to 30%, hntn-products for the photogenerated free electrons is the highest, therefore they serve as the best photoconductive absorber layer in the multijunction solar cells. The effect of Ge content in amorphous silicon network clearly indicates a systematic decrease in the bandgap with increasing Ge content. The E0v values are almost constant around 55meV for alloying up to 40% Ge. Finally the changes in the defect density present in the bandgap of alloy films are inferred from the a(1.0eV) measured by both PDS and low bias light DBP spectrum. The difference between PDS and low bias DBP spectra is attributed to the underlying physics of these methods. The best film with lowest defect density can be prepared with alloying Ge in the range from 10% to 40% Ge.In the light soaked state, samples were left under white light illumination (15 suns) for determined time intervals. SSPC measurements indicate that all samples exhibit certain degree of degradation in the magnitude of sph and hntn products. The rate of a(1.0 eV) decreases as Ge% increases in the light soaked state. Higher Ge content films (50%, 75%) show almost no degradation in sub-bandgap absorption. As the degradation slope of a(hn) and 1/hntn product are not same for all samples it can be inferred that subgap absorption and photoconductivity measurements are not controlled by the same set of defects present in the bandgap.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrogenated amorphous silicon-germanium alloy thin films (a-Si1-xGex:H) were deposited using reactive magnetron sputtering. Dual targets of silicon and germanium were sputtered in an argon + hydrogen atmosphere using RF excitation. Films with x = 0.4 were deposited as a function of substrate temperature and hydrogen partial pressure, and were evaluated by dark and photoconductivity, infrared absorption, and optical transmission. Photosensitivity reached a maximum value of about 4500 between 150 and 200°C. Using the stretching modes in the region of 2000 cm-1, the hydrogen bonding was characterized in terms of the preferential attachment ratio (PA), which represents the ratio between H bonded to Si and H bonded to Ge. The PA shows a systematic increase with increasing temperature, generally independent of hydrogen partial pressure. The interplay between thermodynamic and kinetics effects in determining PA and film quality is discussed.

Book excerpt: Amorphous solids (including glassy and non-crystalline solids) are ubiquitous since the vast majority of solids naturally occurring in our world are amorphous. Although the field is diverse and complex, this three-volume set covers the vast majority of the important concepts needed to understand these materials and their principal practical applications. One volume discusses the most important subset of amorphous insulators, namely oxide glasses; the other two volumes discuss the most important subsets of amorphous semiconductors, namely tetrahedrally coordinated amorphous semiconductors and amorphous and glassy chalcogenides. Together these three volumes provide a comprehensive set of theoretical concepts and practical information needed to become conversant in the field of amorphous materials. They are suitable for advanced graduate students, postdoctoral research associates, and researchers wishing to change fields or sub-fields.The topics covered in these three volumes include (1) concepts for understanding the structures of amorphous materials, (2) techniques to characterize the structural, electronic, and optical properties of amorphous materials, (3) the roles of defects in affecting the electronic and optical properties of amorphous materials, and (4) the concepts for understanding practical devices and other applications of amorphous materials. Applications discussed in these volumes include transistors, solar cells, displays, bolometers, fibers, non-volatile memories, vidicons, photoresists, and optical disks.

Book excerpt: Amorphous silicon solar cell technology has evolved considerably since the first amorphous silicon solar cells were made at RCA Laboratories in 1974. Scien tists working in a number of laboratories worldwide have developed improved alloys based on hydrogenated amorphous silicon and microcrystalline silicon. Other scientists have developed new methods for growing these thin films while yet others have developed new photovoltaic (PV) device structures with im proved conversion efficiencies. In the last two years, several companies have constructed multi-megawatt manufacturing plants that can produce large-area, multijunction amorphous silicon PV modules. A growing number of people be lieve that thin-film photovoltaics will be integrated into buildings on a large scale in the next few decades and will be able to make a major contribution to the world's energy needs. In this book, Ruud E. I. Schropp and Miro Zeman provide an authoritative overview of the current status of thin film solar cells based on amorphous and microcrystalline silicon. They review the significant developments that have occurred during the evolution of the technology and also discuss the most im portant recent innovations in the deposition of the materials, the understanding of the physics, and the fabrication and modeling of the devices.
