This book was released on 2007 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a theoretical investigation of surface effects on the electronic and optical properties of quantum dots. Computations are done using the atomistic Empirical Tight-Binding method based on a nearest-neighbour approximation. Surface effects are "turned off" or "turned on" by respectively passivating surface dangling bonds or allowing them to hang freely. Considered are passivated and unpassivated ZnS and CdS; mixed ZnCdS alloy; and core/shell ZnS/CdS and CdS/ZnS semiconductor nanocrystallites, all at various sizes ranging between & sim;13--46 A in diameter. The computational results show that passivated crystallites yield clean bandgaps that increase in size as crystallite size decreases, causing a monotonic blue shift in the position of the corresponding absorption onset. When the surface is left unpassivated, surface states populate energies in and around the fundamental bandgap. Their locations, however, are not size dependant and consequently the corresponding optical spectra are also devoid of monotonic size dependencies.

Book Synopsis Optical Properties of Zinc Selenide Grown Using Molecular Beam Deposition Techniques by : K. Welford
Download or read book Optical Properties of Zinc Selenide Grown Using Molecular Beam Deposition Techniques written by K. Welford and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many optical applications are currently being found for II-VI semiconductors such as Zinc Selenide (ZnSe). Applications, like anti-reflection coatings, optical limiters, or as part of more complicated structures for use as optically non-linear switches with potential use in optical signal processing and optical computing cover just a selection of uses. For the first time the refractive index of Molecular Beam Deposition grown Zinc Selenide films has been measured for three different growth temperatures and the wavelength and temperature dispersions quantified. Permanent absorption, but not refractive index, changes have been identified for the first time. Possible origins of the changes are conjectured along with the significant effects they will cause in optically bistable devices. Future studies are outlined which it is hoped will go some way towards producing better quality material and thus devices. Great Britain. (aw).

This book was released on 2023-04-20 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three-volumes book “Handbook of II-VI Semiconductor-Based Sensors and Radiation Detectors” is the first to cover both chemical sensors and biosensors and all types of photodetectors and radiation detectors based on II-VI semiconductors. It contains a comprehensive and detailed analysis of all aspects of the application of II-VI semiconductors in these devices. The first volume "Materials and Technologies" of a three-volume set describes the physical, chemical and electronic properties of II-VI compounds, which give rise to an increased interest in these semiconductors. Technologies that are used in the development of various devices based on II-VI connections, such as material synthesis, deposition, characterization, processing, and device fabrication, are also discussed in detail in this volume. It covers also topics related to synthesis and application of II-VI-based nanoparticles and quantum dots, as well their toxicity, biocompatibility and biofunctionalization.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the photocatalytic activity of ZnSe/CdS core/shell semiconductor nanocrystals. These nanoparticles exhibit a spatial separation of photoinduced charges between the core and the shell domains, which makes them potentially viable for photocatalytic applications. Unfortunately, one of the excited charges remains inside the core semiconductor and thus cannot efficiently react with the external environment. Here, we explore this issue by investigating the mechanisms of hole extraction from the ZnSe core to the surface of the CdS shell. In particular, the effect of shell thickness in ZnSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals on the ability of core-localized charges to perform oxidative reactions was determined. By using a combination of time-resolved spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques, we demonstrate that the use of holescavenging surfactants facilitates an efficient transfer of core-localized holes to the surface even in the case of shells exceeding 7 nm in thickness. These measurements further demonstrate that photoinduced holes can be extracted from the core faster than they recombine with shell-localized electrons, indicating that most of the absorbed energy in ZnSe/CdS nanocrystals can be used to drive catalytic reactions.
