Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of new sources and methods in the terahertz spectral range has generated intense interest in terahertz spectroscopy and its application in an array of fields. Presenting state-of-the-art terahertz spectroscopic techniques, Terahertz Spectroscopy: Principles and Applications focuses on time-domain methods based on femtosecond laser sources and important recent applications in physics, materials science, chemistry, and biomedicine. The first section of the book examines instrumentation and methods for terahertz spectroscopy. It provides a comprehensive treatment of time-domain terahertz spectroscopic measurements, including methods for the generation and detection of terahertz radiation, methods for determining optical constants from time-domain measurements, and the use of femtosecond time-resolved techniques. The last two sections explore a variety of applications of terahertz spectroscopy in physics, materials science, chemistry, and biomedicine. With chapters contributed by leading experts in academia, industry, and research, this volume thoroughly discusses methods and applications, setting it apart from other recent books in this emerging terahertz field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intense Terahertz Excitation of Semiconductors presents the first comprehensive treatment of high-power terahertz applications to semiconductors and low-dimensional semiconductor structures. Terahertz properties of semiconductors are in the center of scientific activities because of the need of high-speed electronics. This research monograph brigdes the gap between microwave physics and photonics. It focuses on a core topic of semiconductor physics providing a full description of the state of the art of the field. _ The reader is introduced to new physical phenomena which occur in the terahertz frequency range at the transition from semi-classical physics with a classical field amplitude to the fully quantized limit with photons. The book covers a wide range of optical, optoelectronic, and nonlinear transport processes, presenting experimental results, clearly visualizing models and basic theories. Background information for future work and exhaustive references of current literature are given. A particularly valuable feature is through the discussion of various technical aspects of the terahertz range like the generation of high-power coherent radiation, optical components, instrumentation, and detection schemes of short intense radiation impulses. The book complements, for the first time in form of a monograph, previous books on infrared physics which dealt with low-power optical and opto-electronic processes. It will be useful not only to scientists but also to advanced students who are interested in terahertz research.

Book excerpt: This invaluable book is devoted to the physics, technology and device applications of semiconductor structures with ultrathin layers where the electronic properties are governed by the quantum-mechanical laws. Such structures called quantum wells or structures with the two-dimensional electron gas, have become one of the most actively investigated objects in modern solid state physics. Electronic properties of quantum wells differ dramatically from those of bulk semiconductors, which allows one to observe new types of physical phenomena, such as the quantum Hall effect and many other so-far-unknown kinetic and optical effects. This, in turn, offers wide opportunities for creating semiconductor devices based on new principles, and it has give birth to the new branch of electronics called nanoelectronics.

This book was released on 1989 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zero field mobilities in GaAs/A1(x)Ga(1-x)As(100) inverted HEMT structures in excess of 100,000 sq cm/V-Sec at LN2 temperatures have been achieved . The possibility of high mobilities in square single quantum wells with modulation doping on the inverted interface side only is demonstrated. Photoluminescences linewidth dependence on the square single quantum well width shows inverse proportion rather than the inverse cubic proportion behavior expected from the popularly used notion of well width fluctuations. The observed behavior is shown to be consistent with fluctuations in the band edge discontinuity (i.e. well depth) arising from in-plane fluctuations in the alloy composition of the A1xGa(1-x)As barrier layers in high quality structures. Influence of an electric field across single and coupled-double quantum wells on their optical characteristics is examined theoretically and through photoluminescence, photocurrent, electroreflectance, photoreflectance and Photovoltage measurements. Exploiting growth conditions controlled thermodynamic and kinetic effects on facet formation and inter-facet migration, a unique in-situ method for realization of quantum wire and quantum box structures without the need for lithography or direct-write patterning on such small dimensions is demonstrated. Finally, some initial results on resonant tunneling diodes are reported.
