Book excerpt: We present an adaptation of the BEAMTAP (Broadband and Efficient Adaptive Method for True-time-delay Array Processing) algorithm, previously developed for wideband phased array radars, to lower bandwidth applications such as sonar. This system utilizes the emerging time or wavelength multiplexed optical hydrophone sensors and processes the cohered array of signals in the optical domain without conversion to the electronic domain or digitization. Modulated signals from an optical hydrophone array are pre-processed then imaged through a photorefractive crystal where they interfere with a reference signal and its delayed replicas. The diffraction of the sonar signals off these adaptive weight gratings and detection on a linear time-delay-and-integrate charge coupled device (TDI CCD) completes the true-time-delay (TTD) beamforming process. Optical signals focused on different regions of the TDI CCD accumulate the appropriate delays necessary to synchronize and coherently sum the acoustic signals arriving at various angles on the hydrophone array. In this report, we present an experimental demonstration of TTD processing of low frequency signals (in the KHz sonar regime) using a TDI CCD tapped delay line. Simulations demonstrating the performance of the overall system are also presented.

Book excerpt: In this final report we summarize our progress towards developing an innovative algorithm called BEAMTAP (Broadband Efficient Adaptive Method for True-time-delay Array Processing) for adaptive array processing in broadband scenarios. This approach is especially appropriate for optical implementation of sonar array beamforming. The BEAMTAP algorithm only requires two tapped delay lines, rather than one for every array element as required by conventional time-delay-and-sum beamformers. This efficiency provides a huge hardware savings for large arrays. By separating the delay lines from the adaptive weights, this algorithm can be more easily implemented in optical hardware, making it easier to exploit processing and interfacing advantages of optical systems. We discuss an optical beamforming and jammer-nulling system for sonar array beamforming that utilizes photorefractive crystals for the adaptive weights in combination with time-delay-and-integrate (TDI) charge-coupled device (CCD) detector arrays to process the parallel data from optically interrogated arrays of hydrophone sensors. In this report we discuss the operation of BEAMTAP in comparison with LMS time-delay-and-sum array processors and P-vector passive array beamsteering operations, and we demonstrate its operation using numerical simulations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern radar, telecommunication, sonar, and radio-astronomy systems use integrated systems, complex signals, and signal processing methods exten sively. These systems require the development of new, more efficient systems. One of the major ways to improve radar and sonar systems is to use multichannel systems, the most promising of which employ space-time signal processing. In the last few years the intensive growth in electronics, informa tion processing techniques, microwave and laser technology, electrooptics and holography, acoustics, and optoelectronics have resulted in new scientific and technological research fronts. One of these is the theory and technology of electrooptical array antennas-a new class of receiving antennas whose pat tern is controlled by means of coherent optics and holography. Electrooptical array theory and technology have been involved in the study of the power, resolution, and range characteristics of arrays with various coherent opti cal processors. The practical applications of these systems and methods for building them using contemporary optoelectronics have also been studied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of optical modeling of acoustic arrays for the purpose of performing Fourier transform signal processing is developed. An optical model is an array of light-emitting elements, usually similar in geometry to an acoustic array, that facilitates reconstruction of a sound field with coherent light. Dielectric waveguides, glass fibers that transmit light signals preserving phase and amplitude, are essential elements in a two-stage processor for a planar array. This processor performs frequency analyses on all hydrophone channels and then, sequentially as a function of frequency, it performs two-dimensional space transforms. In the processor for the planar array, the dielectric waveguide fibers rearrange light signals representing frequency-analyzed hydrophone signals into an optical model of the array. Modeling of certain three-dimensional arrays also may be possible with fibers. A 10-element line array of dielectric waveguides has been constructed to show that a significant number of fibers can be controlled in relative phase. Control of both phase and amplitude in a dielectric waveguide fiber also has been demonstrated. This report suggest the potential inherent in optical Fourier methods that are being developed to provide a basis for the design and construction of new processors for sonar. (Author).

The virtues and weaknesses of optical systems are examined, and significant developments in electronic systems are noted. State-of-the-art inadequacies of the optical system are discussed. Indications are that at the present and for the immediate future, electronic techniques remain the preferred approach to solving sonar signal processing problems. However, technological advances in the state-of-the-art in optical techniques may justify reconsideration of optics in the future. (Author).

This book was released on 1964 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this note is to present a conceptual approach for using the LMSC 'Barber Pole' optical correlator to simultaneously process multichannel signals from large acoustic arrays. The principal of operation of the LMSC 'Barber Pole' correlator, the description of the experimental model, and the description of test results are reported in reference (1). Briefly, the LMSC optical correlator is a non-coherent-optical correlation detector of the stored reference type. This correlator performs real time correlation of received signals with the stored reference without a priori knowledge of the signal delays. The use of real time integration in the correlation operation avoids the problems of recording received signals on film prior to correlation with the reference. The first experimental model achieved a processing gain of 20 db for a reference record that was theoretically capable of providing a processing gain of 23 db. A substantial increase in processing gain can undoubtedly be obtained by using more densely recorded reference records and by further refining the correlator. Consideration is given here to the conceptual design of a sonar signal processing unit based on the principle of the LMSC correlator. The conceptual design is intended to be compatible with the requirements of both active and passive sonar signal processing.

Book excerpt: The subject "optical signal processing" can and should include all aspects of optics and signal processing. However, that is too large a scope for a textbook that, like this one, is intended as an introduc tion to the subject at a level suitable for first year graduate students of electrical engineering, physics, and optical engineering. There fore, the subject matter has been restricted. The book begins with basic background material on optics, signal processing, matrix alge bra, ultrasound and SAWs, and CCDs. One might argue about this choice of topics. For example, there already exist very good books on matrix algebra. However, matrix algebra is so important in sig nal processing, especially in connection with devices such as optical matrix processors, that it was felt that a review was essential. Also, the matrix algebra needed for systolic arrays and parallel computing has made great advances in recent years. My original intention was to write a single-volume textbook cov ering most of the fundamental concepts and applications of optical signal processing. However, it soon became apparent that the large amount of material to be included would make publication in a single volume impracticable. Therefore this volume treats the "fundamen tals" and a second volume will appear dealing with devices and applications. This textbook was stimulated by a set of short courses that I have directed and lectured since 1976, as well as regular courses that I have taught at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute since 1974.

Book excerpt: This research program centered on the investigation of low-accuracy analog opto-electronic methods for processing multi-sensor-array data (e.g., phased array radar, sonar). Two methods were considered for signal orthogonalization in low-accuracy preprocessors, one based on a resonant piezo-electro-optic modulator devices. Neither method appears to offer significant benefits over all-electronic preprocessor methods because of the lack of large-scale parallelism. An analog, continuous-time opto-electronic processor for adaptive phased array signal processing was also considered that does exhibit considerable parallelism and shows promise for use as a low-accuracy co-processor in a hybrid analog/digital configuration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Application of optical signal processing techniques to adaptive array processing was investigated. The common adaptive array algorithms were reviewed. Adaptive array processing generally requires some form of correlation and the characterisitics of optical correlators were compared leading to the selection of the time integrating optical correlator for further investigation. An adaptive array processor using time integrating optical correlators, which was first proposed by David Casasent, was analyzed to determine applicability of this signal processing technique to a general adaptive array environment. This processor was found to be similar to a comparable maximum likelihood approach. Limitations on the performance of this processor in terms of ambiguity and resolution were found and these results were confirmed by computer simulation of the adaptive array environment, the processor, and the resulting antenna response. Book excerpt: The objective of this contract was to design, fabricate, and test an optical processor to perform an ambiguity function to detect relative time delay and frequency shift between a pair of passive sonar receivers. The optical architecture used in this program is the unique linear phase shifter (LIPS) architecture which was developed at Honeywell. The support electronics for the optical processor were designed around a PDP-11/23 minicomputer. The PDP-11/23 controls the functions of the optical processor, stores input and output data, and provides I/O to an outside Host computer. Real sonar data on synthetic calibration data were processed to demonstrate the functionality of the system. Overall, the objectives of this program were completed. The result of this program was the development of an optical processing system capable of supporting different optical architectures or processing scenarios. Using a minicomputer controller gives the system the required flexibility to handle different tasks. The LIPS optical architecture used for this program is capable of running at 500 frames/seconds if it were not I/O limited at the detector output. This rate corresponds to approximately a 10 giga-multiply/adds per second processing rate. The electronic I/O limited the processing rate to approximately 5 frames/second.
