Book excerpt: Born originally as a software for instrumentation control, LabVIEW became quickly a very powerful programming language, having some peculiar characteristics which made it unique: the simplicity in creating very effective Users Interfaces and the G programming mode. While the former allows designing very professional controls panels and whole Applications, completed with features for distributing and installing them, the latter represents an innovative and enthusiastic way of programming: the Graphical representation of the code. The surprising aspect is that such a way of conceiving algorithms is absolutely similar to the SADT method (Structured Analysis and Design Technique) introduced by Douglas T. Ross and SofTech, Inc. (USA) in 1969 from an original idea of MIT, and extensively used by US Air Force for their projects. LabVIEW practically allows programming by implementing straightly the equivalent of an SADT "actigram". Beside this academical aspect, LabVIEW can be used in a variety of forms, creating projects that can spread over an enormous field of applications: from control and monitor software to data treatment and archiving; from modeling to instruments controls; from real time programming to advanced analysis tools with very powerful mathematical algorithms ready to use; from full integration with native hardware (by National Instruments) to an easy implementation of drivers for third party hardware. In this book a collection of different applications which cover a wide range of possibilities is presented. We go from simple or distributed control software to modeling done in LabVIEW; from very specific applications to usage in the educational environment.

Walt Whitman, "Leaves of Grass", 1900. The Internet is growing at a tremendous rate today. New services, such as telephony and multimedia, are being added to the pure data-delivery framework of yesterday. Such high demands on capacity could lead to a "bandwidth-crunch" at the core wide-area network resulting in degra dation of service quality. Fortunately, technological innovations have emerged which can provide relief to the end-user to overcome the In ternet's well-known delay and bandwidth limitations. At the physical layer, a major overhaul of existing networks has been envisaged from electronic media (such as twisted-pair and cable) to optical fibers - in the wide area, in the metropolitan area, and even in the local area set tings. In order to exploit the immense bandwidth potential of the optical fiber, interesting multiplexing techniques have been developed over the years. Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is such a promising tech nique in which multiple channels are operated along a single fiber si multaneously, each on a different wavelength. These channels can be independently modulated to accommodate dissimilar bit rates and data formats, if so desired. Thus, WDM carves up the huge bandwidth of an optical fiber into channels whose bandwidths (1-10 Gbps) are compati ble with peak electronic processing speed.

Book excerpt: In these exciting times of quotidianly progressing developments in communication techniques, where more than ever in the history of a technological progress, society's reliance on communication networks for medicine, education, data transfer, commerce, and many other endeavours dominates the human's everyday life, the optical networks are certainly one of the most promising and challenging networking options. Since their commercial arrival in the nineties, they have fundamentally changed the way of dealing with traffic engineering by removing bandwidth bottlenecks and eliminating delays. Today, after the revolutionary bandwidth expansion, the networking functionality migrates more and more to the optical layer, and the need to establish fast wavelength circuits and capacity-on-demand for the higher-layer networks, in particular data networks based on Internet Protocol (IP), has become one of the central networking issues for the new century. The unifying trends toward configurable all-optical network infrastructure open up a wide range of new network engineering and design choices dealing with networks' interoperability and common platforms for control and management. The Fifth Working Conference on Optical Network Design and Modelling, held in the Austrian capital Vienna, February 5-7, 2001, aims at presenting the most recent progress in optical communication techniques, new technologies, standardisation process, emerging markets and carriers. A short look at the Table of Contents of this book tells us, in fact, that this year's conference program reflects the current state of the art precisely.

Book excerpt: Modeling, Simulation, Design and Engineering of WDM Systems and Networks provides readers with the basic skills, concepts, and design techniques used to begin design and engineering of optical communication systems and networks at various layers. The latest semi-analytical system simulation techniques are applied to optical WDM systems and networks, and a review of the various current areas of optical communications is presented. Simulation is mixed with experimental verification and engineering to present the industry as well as state-of-the-art research. This contributed volume is divided into three parts, accommodating different readers interested in various types of networks and applications. The first part of the book presents modeling approaches and simulation tools mainly for the physical layer including transmission effects, devices, subsystems, and systems), whereas the second part features more engineering/design issues for various types of optical systems including ULH, access, and in-building systems. The third part of the book covers networking issues related to the design of provisioning and survivability algorithms for impairment-aware and multi-domain networks. Intended for professional scientists, company engineers, and university researchers, the text demonstrates the effectiveness of computer-aided design when it comes to network engineering and prototyping.

It consists of a transmitter that encodes a message into an optical signal, a channel that carries this optical signal to its desired destination, and a receiver that reproduces the message from the received optical signal. It presents up to date results on communication systems, along with the explanations of their relevance, from leading researchers in this field. The chapters of this book cover general concepts of high-speed optical communication, optical devices used optical communication, and optical communication systems. In recent years, optical devices and other enhanced signal processing functions are also considered in depth for high-speed optical communications systems. Commonly used optical devices are light emitting diodes and photodetectors. This book is targeted at research, development and design engineers from the teams in manufacturing industry, academia and telecommunication industries.

Book excerpt: Praise for Emmanuel Desurvire's Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers: Principles and Applications "The book is an indispensable reference for researchers, development engineers, and system designers in fiber-optic communications. . . . It will excel as an introductory text in upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses on system applications of fiber optics." -Optik "One of the most comprehensive and detailed accounts of the physics and fundamental principles of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. . . . I do not hesitate to recommend the book enthusiastically to anyone having an interest in EDFAs and their applications." -Physics Today Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers are an important technology for lightwave voice, video, and data transmission. In his previous book, Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers: Principles and Applications, Emmanuel Desurvire offered an important exploration of the then-infant technology of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. The passage of the 1996 Telecommunications Act and the growth of the Internet have sparked intense demand for expanded bandwidth in all network layers, resulting in significant advances in EDFA technology. Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers: Device and System Developments brings telecommunications professionals up to date. Combining the contributions from four international experts in EDFAs, this new volume expands the reader's conceptual understanding of EDFAs and covers the developmental issues of EDFAs that are relevant to modern telecom applications. The authors review: * New aspects in EDFA modeling, including the standard confined-doping, the transcendental-power-equation, and average-inversion-level models * Design concepts for EDFAs in terrestrial and submarine WDM systems * Transmission fiber design and dispersion-management techniques for terabit/s systems * Amplified submarine-cable systems, including a brief history of submarine-cable communications and the investigation of terabit/s system technologies * Advanced concepts in the physics of noise in amplified light, noise figure definitions, entropy, and ultimate capacity limits Delving into fundamental concepts (including a wealth of previously unpublished materials) as well as important breakthroughs, this much-needed resource will place telecom engineers in a position to take advantage of every aspect in the broad potential of EDFAs.
