Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in optical information technology in Europe has been very active inrecent years. This volume records state-of-the-art research conducted in some 22 laboratories who have worked together within EC ESPRIT Basic Research Action 3199 up to 1992. The topics cover: (1) Active optical logic and switching devices - embracing new materials, nonlinear and electrooptic mechanisms as well as advanced device fabrication. These devices cover the range from all-optical nonlinear interferometer structures through hybrid optical-electronic modulators to integrated emitter-receiver structures. (2) The latest state of optical interconnect technology, embracing diffractive optics (binary and multi-level phase gratings), holographic space-variant elements and micro-refractive optics. (3) Contributions on optical information processing architecture and demonstrator projects. The materials base ranges from silicon to II-VI materials with the realisation of pn-junction devices in ZnSe. The research reported here lays the basis for long-term progress in devices for information processing.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Optics in Computers by : Henri H. Arsenault
Download or read book An Introduction to Optics in Computers written by Henri H. Arsenault and published by SPIE Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume surveys the entire field of optical computing. The emphasis is on breadth of coverage. The book is descriptive, the authors minimize the use of mathematics, and it is therefore most suitable for those who require an overall view of what is going on in this field. A detailed comparison is given of the capabilities of electronics and optics, and the degree to which these capabilities have been achieved is indicated. Other areas of focus include optical computing architectures, components and technologies, optical interconnects, and optical neural nets. Approximately 300 references to key works in the field are included.

Book Synopsis Applications of Photonic Technology by : J. Chrostowski
Download or read book Applications of Photonic Technology written by J. Chrostowski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book we present a snapshot of the state of the art in photonics in 1994, showing typical applications and emerging new ones; discussing the key technologies behind these applications, their limitations, and prospects. The articles in this book are extended versions of the papers presented at the first International Conference on Applications ofPhotonic Technology (ICAPT'94), held in Toronto, Canada, on June 21-23, 1994. Photonics has been recognized as one of the key technologies for the 21 st century, as electronics was the technology of the 20th centrury and electrical engineering changed the life of people in the 19th century. According to the recent report of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris (OECD), the market for photonics will grow dramatically in the next 10 years with an expected world-wide expenditure of US $230 billion from some US $30 billion in 1992. The explosion of information technology was the largest driving force for the deployment of photonic technology. It created insatiable demand for ever-higher data transmission and processing rates, which cannot be sustained by electronics alone. Boosted by the enonnous investment of the telecommunications and defense industries, the demand for photonics (or optoelectronics) is steadily increasing. It is solidly established in the long haul communications, laser printers and CD-ROMs.
