Book excerpt: The coherent interaction between an optical wave and an electron beam in a free electron laser (FEL) is shown to be capable of optically guiding the light. The effect is analyzed using a two-dimensional approximation for the FEL equations, and using the properties of optical fibers. Results of two-dimensional (cylindrically symmetric) numerical simulations are presented, and found to agree reasonably well with the analytically derived criterion for guiding. Under proper conditions, the effect can be large and has important applications to short wavelength FEL's and to directing intense light.

Book excerpt: The electron beam in a free-electron laser (FEL) can act as an optical fiber, guiding or bending the optical beam. The refractive and gain effects of the bunched electron beam can compensate for diffraction, making possible wigglers that are many Rayleigh ranges (i.e., characteristic diffraction lengths) long. The origin of optical guiding can be understood by examining gain and refractive guiding in a fiber with a complex index of refraction, providing a mathematical description applicable also to the FEL, with some extensions. In the exponential gain regime of the FEL, the electron equations of motion must be included, but a self-consistent description of exponential gain with diffraction fully included becomes possible. The origin of the effective index of refraction of an FEL is illustrated with a simple example of bunched, radiating dipoles. Some of the properties of the index of refraction are described. The limited experimental evidence for optical beam bending is summarized. The evidence does not yet provide conclusive proof of the existence of optical guiding, but supports the idea. Finally, the importance of refractive guiding for the performance of a high-gain tapered-wiggler FEL amplifier is illustrated with numerical simulations.

Book excerpt: The spatial properties of the optical field and hence the performance of a free electron laser depend on the fact that the electron beam, which acts as both an amplifying and a refractive medium, is transversely nonuniform. Under certain circumstances, optical guiding may be realized, where the optical field is stably confined near the electron beam and amplified along the beam over many Rayleigh ranges. We show that the three-dimensional evolution of the optical field through the interaction region can be determined by a guided mode expansion before saturation. Optical guiding occurs when the fundamental growing mode becomes dominant. The guided mode expansion is made possible by implementing the biorthogonality of the eigenmodes of the coupled electron-beam-optical-wave system. The eigenmodes are found to be of vectorial form with three components; one specifies the guided optical mode and the other two describe the density and the energy modulations of the electron beam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nonlinear theory of optical guiding in an Free Electron Laser Amplifier is developed for the case in which the spatial dependence of the current source term in the wave equation can be separated into the product of a function of radius and a function of axial distance. Such a separation can be motivated if either the betatron wavelength is shorter than other lengths of interest (synchrotron wavelength, vacuum Rayleigh length) or if the radiation waist exceeds the beam radius. In this limit with the choice of a Gaussian profile for the electron beam density the wave equation can be solved exactly and the radiation field felt by the particles can be expressed as a one dimensional convolution of the current source. With the given expression for the radiation field, the equations of motion can be solved in the trapped particle regime. Requiring consistency between the particle motion and the fields yields expressions describing nonlinear guided states. The adiabatic evolution of these guided states in the presence of a tapered wiggler is determined by conservation of the electrons action and total (field + electron beam) energy. Using these relations the growth of the radiation waist as the beam is decelerated can be calculated.

Book excerpt: In the free electron laser (FEL) the resonant interaction between the radiation field and electron beam can result in radiation focusing (optical guiding). If the centroid of the electron beam is transversely displaced off aixs, the radiation field, under certain conditions, will follow and be steered by the electron beam. The effect of a spatial modulation on the electron beam envelope can also modify the propagation characteristics of the radiation. These and other phenomena are analytically and numerically studied using a novel source dependent Laguerre-Gaussian modal representation of the fully three dimensional radiation field. Unlike the vacuum Laguerre-Gaussian modal expansion, the longitudinal spatial dependence of the radiation waist and curvature are determined and characterized by the source term in the wave equation. Among the advantages of this general source dependent expansion (SDE) approach is that few modes are needed to accurately describe the radiation. Hence, fast and accurate numerical solutions of the fully three-dimensional FEL problem can be obtained over distances of many Rayleigh lengths. Furthermore, this expansion enables us to drive an envelope equation for the radiation beams as well as an expression for the centroid of the beam. Book excerpt: The free-electron laser (FEL) simulation code FRED, developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) primarily to model single-pass FEL amplifiers driven by induction linear accelerators, is described. The main emphasis is on the modeling of optical propagation in the laser and on the differences between the requirements for modeling rf-linac-driven vs. induction-linac-driven FELs. Examples of optical guiding and mode cleanup are presented for a 50 .mu.m FEL.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time that we decided to begin work on this book, several other volumes on the free-electron laser had either been published or were in press. The earliest work of which we were aware was published in 1985 by Dr T. C. Marshall of Columbia University [1]. This book dealt with the full range of research on free-electron lasers, including an overview of the extant experiments. However, the field has matured a great deal since that time and, in our judgement, the time was ripe for a more extensive work which includes the most recent advances in the field. The fundamental work in this field has largely been approached from two distinct and, unfortunately, separate viewpoints. On the one hand, free-electron lasers at sub-millimetre and longer wavelengths driven by low-energy and high-current electron beams have been pursued by the plasma physics and microwave tube communities. This work has confined itself largely to the high-gain regimes in which collective effects may play an important role. On the other hand, short-wavelength free-electron lasers in the infrared and optical regimes have been pursued by the accelerator and laser physics community. Due to the high-energy and low-current electron beams appropriate to this spectral range, these experiments have operated largely in the low-gain single-particle regimes. The most recent books published on the free-electron laser by Dr C. A.
