Book excerpt: In this dissertation, we use different optical and imaging spectroscopy techniques to study electronic structure and optical properties of CdTe/ZnTe and CdSe/ZnSe self-assembled quantum dots (SAQDs). We perform single dot photoluminescence excitation experiments to identify carrier excitation mechanisms in CdTe/ZnTe QDs. The first mechanism is direct excitation into the QD excited states followed by relaxation to the ground state and the second mechanism is direct excitation into the QD ground states through LO phonon-assisted absorption. We then execute resonant PL measurements for both CdTe and CdSe QD ensembles to study the dependence of exciton-LO phonon coupling on QD size in these II-VI SAQDs. We shown that the strength of exciton-LO phonon coupling increases significantly for QDs with lateral sizes smaller than the exciton Bohr radius (e.g. as-grown CdTe QDs) while for larger QDs (e.g. CdSe or CdTe annealed) it is almost independent of the QD emission energy, and therefore presumably of the QD size. In order to study electronic coupling between SAQDs, we setup imaging experiments with the use of a hemisphere solid immersion lens. While the PLE imaging measurements show the existence two-dimensional platelets with a typical size of about 500 nm which provide spatially extended but strong localized states through which different QDs could be populated simultaneously, the spatially resolved imaging data demonstrates a complete 2D map of those platelets. These results are further supported by computational calculations based on finite element analysis. Low temperature exciton spin relaxation in symmetric CdTe SAQDs has been thoroughly studied by means of cw polarized magneto-PL and polarized time-resolved PL spectroscopies. We find that the degeneracy of exciton energy levels has a strong influence on the spin transition. When the exciton spin states in QDs are degenerate, the spin relaxation time is much shorter than the exciton recombination time. In contrast, if this degeneracy is removed, either by asymmetry or an external magnetic field, the spin relaxation time becomes much longer than the exciton recombination time. Using simple rate equation models, we estimate exciton spin relaxation times equal to 4.8 ns and 50 ps for non-degenerate and degenerate QD states, respectively.

Book excerpt: The ability to tune the electronic, magnetic, and optical properties of II-VI semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) makes these materials ideal candidates in the fabrication of new solar energy, spin electronic, and phosphorescent devices. This dissertation makes use of electronic structure theory to provide insight into the physical underpinnings of magnetic exchange and photoexcitation in Mn2[superscript +]- and Co2[superscript +]-doped CdSe and ZnO QDs. Specifically, new methods for controlling these physical effects via the incorporation of various dopants or changes in the QD's size and shape are presented. Several examples of these control techniques are discussed in this dissertation. Ferromagnetic alignment of multiple unpaired Mn2[superscript +] 3d electrons is predicted when the p-type defect N2[superscript - ] is present in ZnO QDs. Control over the magnetic exchange interactions between charge carriers and TM2[superscript] dopants that give rise to ferromagnetism is achieved by distorting the QD's shape along one or two dimensions. Aliovalent doping with Al3[superscript +] produces QDs that are spectroscopically identical to photochemically charged QDs, yet exhibit different reactivities. A unique temperature dependence of the luminescence and photoconductivity in large Co2[superscript +] -doped ZnO QDs is predicted upon excitation of its mid-gap excited state. Lastly, a new method for the optimization of transition state molecular geometries is shown to exhibit fast optimization and to be advantageous for difficult optimizations where the reaction path is flat, ideal for optimizing large QD structures.

The addition of two shells of CdS on CdSe quantum dots prevents the creation of surface traps and makes the system stable under reducing environment. The injection of electrons into films of quantum dots leads to lower photoluminescence (PL) efficiency, with the extent of quenching dependent on both the number and the quantum states of the spectator charges in the nanocrystal. It is found that a 1Pe electron is an eightfold better PL quencher than the 1Se electron. Reduced threshold for stimulated emission is also observed in doped CdSe/CdS films. Time resolved photoluminescence measurements are used to extract the recombination rates of a charged exciton, called trion. It is observed that the negative trion has a radiative rate & sim;2.2 +/- 0.4x faster than a neutral exciton, while its non-radiative recombination rate is slower than the biexciton non-radiative recombination rate by a factor of 7.5 +/- 1.7. The knowledge of the recombination rates of the trion enables us to calculate the quantum yield of a negative trion to be & sim;10% for the nanocrystals investigated in our work. This is larger than the off state quantum yield from a single quantum dot photoluminescence trajectory and eliminates the formation of negative trion as the possible reason for the PL blinking of single quantum dots. Single quantum dot electrochemistry has also been achieved. It is shown that by varying the Fermi level of the system electrons can be reversibly injected into and extracted out of single CdSe/CdS and CdSe/ZnS nanoparticles to modulate the photoluminescence.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This dissertation studies the size- and site-dependent optical and magnetic properties of II-VI quantum dots (QDs). The first chapter provides a theoretical background used to analyze the data and the properties expected for diluted magnetic semiconductor materials at the nanoscale. The second chapter probes the size-dependent magnetic properties for Mn doped CdSe QDs. The Curie-Weiss law plots show significant size-dependent carrier concentration in the QDs. The carriers inside the small QDs can mediate the Mn(II)-Mn(II) ferromagnetic interaction by the RKKY model, which helps explain reasons for the observation of a superparamagnetism (SPM) in small Mn-CdSe QDs. The third chapter involves high frequency EPR analysis of possible dopant (Mn(II) ions) sites in CdSe lattice. Surface doped Mn-CdSe QDs and stochastically doped Mn-CdSe QDs were successfully made by traditional thermal decomposition of cluster and microwave irradiation. Two sets of hyperfine splitting were observed for stochastically doped Mn-CdSe QDs from EPR spectra and the ratio of the signal has liner relationship with the surface to volume ratio of QDs. One set of hyperfine splitting can be removed by surface acid treatment enabled us to identify the Mn(II) sites on the surface or core position of Mn-CdSe QDs. The fourth chapter is a study of chromium incorporation in ZnSe QDs by single cubic source precursor method. The formation of ZnCr2Se4 spinel structure was approved by XANES, and 4A2g to 4T2g transition of Cr (III) ion in absorption spectra.

Book excerpt: We present an overview of the theoretical background and experimental re sults in the rapidly developing field of semiconductor quantum dots - systems 8 6 of dimensions as small as 10- -10- m (quasi-zero-dimensional) that contain a small and controllable number (1-1000) of electrons. The electronic structure of quantum dots, including the energy quan tization of the single-particle states (due to spatial confinement) and the evolution of these (Fock-Darwin) states in an increasing external magnetic field, is described. The properties of many-electron systems confined in a dot are also studied. This includes the separation of the center-of-mass mo tion for the parabolic confining potential (and hence the insensitivity of the transitions under far infrared radiation to the Coulomb interactions and the number of particles - the generalized Kohn theorem) and the effects due to Coulomb interactions (formation of the incompressible magic states at high magnetic fields and their relation to composite jermions), and finally the spin-orbit interactions. In addition, the excitonic properties of quantum dots are discussed, including the energy levels and the spectral function of a single exciton, the relaxation of confined carriers, the metastable states and their effect on the photoluminescence spectrum, the interaction of an exciton with carriers, and exciton condensation. The theoretical part of this work, which is based largely on original re sults obtained by the authors, has been supplemented with descriptions of various methods of creating quantum-dot structures.
