Book Synopsis A Multinational Telemedicine Systems for Disaster Response: Opportunities and Challenges by : C.R. Doarn
Download or read book A Multinational Telemedicine Systems for Disaster Response: Opportunities and Challenges written by C.R. Doarn and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2016-12-13 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of a disaster, medical infrastructure is often significantly impacted or destroyed in the affected zone. Recognizing the need for an effective system for deployment in disaster zones, the Emerging Security Challenges Division within NATO's Science for Peace and Security Program (SPS) initiated the development of a multinational telemedicine system (MnTS). Such a system can improve access to health services and increase survival rates in emergency situations spanning both geographical and time zones. This book presents a review of this NATO-funded MnTS, and follows the thematic approach to its development. The book is divided into 14 chapters; Chapter 1 includes a historical review of telemedicine and disasters and Chapter 2 provides a historical perspective of NATO's efforts in the field of telemedicine, while Chapters 3 – 12 summarize the development of the MnTS. Critical components of the MnTS are addressed, such as overall organizational structure, the integration of information technology, legal and regulatory considerations, and outreach and public awareness. The evaluation of the MnTS in a field exercise is described, and the book closes with a final summary of the MnTS. The book addresses the challenges faced in deploying telemedicine following a disaster, such as IT, language, culture and legal issues, and provides a template for making telemedicine part of international disaster response.

This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the first collection of empirical studies focusing on peer interaction for L2 learning. These studies aim to unveil the impact of mediating variables such as task type, mode of interaction, and social relationships on learners’ interactional behaviors and language development in this unique and pedagogically powerful learning context. To examine these issues, contributors employed quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods designs as well as cognitive, social, and sociocognitive theoretical frameworks. The majority of the studies are classroom based and were conducted in a rich array of settings covering five continents and encompassing a wide range of learner L1s and target languages. These settings include second and foreign language classrooms from primary to university level, content-based programs, online contexts, and after-school programs. To span the divide between research and practice, each study includes a section suggesting pedagogical implications.

Book Synopsis Seasonal Flood Forecasts and Warning Response Opportunities by : Md. Rashed Chowdhury
Download or read book Seasonal Flood Forecasts and Warning Response Opportunities written by Md. Rashed Chowdhury and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-16 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the feasibility of using El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-based forecasts and early warning systems to prevent losses from floods and droughts in Bangladesh. Despite advances in short-range flood forecasting and information dissemination systems in Bangladesh, the present system is less than satisfactory. This is due to short lead-time products, outdated dissemination networks, and lack of direct feedback from the end-user. One viable solution is to produce long-lead seasonal forecasts—the demand for which is significantly increasing in Bangladesh— and disseminate these products through appropriate channels. As observed in other regions, the success of seasonal forecasts, in contrast to short-term forecasts, depends on consensus among the participating institutions. Therefore, the primary objective of the book is to revisit and modify the framework of an ideal warning response system for issuance of consensus seasonal flood forecasts in Bangladesh. The book discusses issues related to the 5-stage Flood Forecasts, Warning, and Response System (FFWRS) and emphasizes the role of the seasonal ‘Climate Outlook Forum (COF)’ in Bangladesh. The book also identifies ways to improve forecasting and early warning systems by utilizing ENSO-based climate data and models, and discusses a comprehensive and participatory approach to seasonal flood hazard management in Bangladesh. Several successful case examples of ENSO-based seasonal forecasts and early warning systems from other ENSO-sensitive regions have been documented. The primary audience includes academics and students, government policymakers, engineers, and business leaders.
