Book excerpt: If one takes the intuitive point of view that a system is a black box whose inputs and outputs are time functions or time series it is natural to adopt an operator theoretic approach to the stUdy of such systems. Here the black box is modeled by an operator which maps an input time function into an output time function. Such an approach yields a unification of the continuous (time function) and discrete (time series) theories and simultaneously allows one to formulate a single theory which is valid for time-variable distributed and nonlinear systems. Surprisingly, however, the great potential for such an approach has only recently been realized. Early attempts to apply classical operator theory typically having failed when optimal controllers proved to be non-causal, feedback systems unstable or coupling networks non-lossless. Moreover, attempts to circumvent these difficulties by adding causality or stability constraints to the problems failed when it was realized that these time based concepts were undefined and; in fact, undefinable; in the Hilbert and Banach spaces of classical operator theory.

The volume contains papers in operator theory and its applications (understood in a very wide sense), many of them reflecting, 1 directly or indirectly, a profound impact of the work of Moshe Livsic. Moshe (Mikhail Samuilovich) Livsic was born on July 4, 1917, in the small town of Pokotilova near Uman, in the province of Kiev in the Ukraine; his family moved to Odessa when he was four years old. In 1933 he enrolled in the Department of Physics and Mathematics at the Odessa State University, where he became a student of M. G. Krein and an active participant in Krein's seminar - one of the centres where the ideas and methods of functional analysis and operator theory were being developed. Besides M. G. Krein, M. S. Livsic was strongly influenced B. Va. Levin, an outstanding specialist in the theory of analytic functions. A by deep understanding of operator theory as well as function theory and a penetrating search of connections between the two, were to become one of the landmarks of M. S. Livsic's work. M. S. Livsic defended his Ph. D.

This is evident in the analysis of subnormal operators, Toeplitz operators and Hankel operators, for example. On the other hand the operator theoretic viewpoint of interpolation by analytic functions is a powerful one. There has been significant activity in recent years, within these enriching interactions, and the time seemed right for an overview ot the main lines of development. The Advanced Study Institute 'Operators and Function Theory' in Lancaster, 1984, was devoted to this, and this book contains ex panded versions (and one contraction) of the main lecture prog ramme. These varied articles, by prominent researchers, include, for example, a survey of recent results on subnormal operators, recent work of Soviet mathematicians on Hankel and Toeplitz operators, expositions of the decomposition theory and inter polation theory for Bergman, Besov and Bloch spaces, with applic ations for special operators, the Krein space approach to inter polation problems, •• and much more. It is hoped that these proceedings will bring all this lively mathematics to a wider audience. The programme consisted of 6 invited plenary lectures, 54 invited special topic lectures and more than 100 invited session talks. About 180 participants from 25 countries attended the workshop, more than a third came from Eastern Europe. The conference covered different aspects of linear and nonlinear spectral prob lems, starting with problems for abstract operators up to spectral theory of ordi nary and partial differential operators, pseudodifferential operators, and integral operators. The workshop was also focussed on operator theory in spaces with indefinite metric, operator functions, interpolation and extension problems.
