Book excerpt: Excerpt from Operation of Trains and Station Work and Telegraphy The proper administration and operation of the train department of railways is one of first importance in modern American railway practice. It is the department which comes in closest contact with the general public. Passenger trains must be safely run and on time. Freight trains are of nearly equal importance and freight must be handled without causing friction with shippers. Intelligent, skillful, well directed effort and harmony of action is necessary to ensure this. The operating forces, particularly in the train department have shown an improvement equally as marked as the improvement and progress in railways, and this forward movement continues. Railway men are on the alert for information, they now seek reasons before coming to conclusions. The result being that railway men of the future will have a far wider range of knowledge than railway men of the past ever dreamed of possessing. Those in whom this spirit of inquiry has been awakened will not rest content with knowledge gained through personal experience alone, instead, while continuing to profit by experience they will supplement it with observation, inquiry and study. The editors have endeavored to meet in this particular volume the needs of just such men. Compiled from many sources it contains the essence of numerous standard works by noted writers of authority, to whom grateful acknowledgment is made. Being largely a compilation no claim to originality is made. Doubtless some omissions have been made, and possibly some redundant matter may be found, but, even so, it is believed it will prove a work of much value and interest to those for whom primarily it is designed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Railway Goods Station: A Guide to Its Control and Operation The object of this work is to attempt to supply what I have for long felt to be a much-needed want - some information and suggestions on the main principles of organising and regulating a goods station. There are railway books in abundance, dealing with the subjects of train-running, signalling, statistics, and other mechanical and scientific matters; but so far as I am aware there are not any that treat the important parts of the inner working of a goods station in such a way as to be of real use to the person responsible for carrying on its Operations. The many complexities and pitfalls of a large station are fully realised only by those persons intimately associated with one, and it frequently passes even their ingenuity to properly cope with them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Supply Train: Its Organization and Work The first purpose of this book is to furnish National Army Sup-ply Train Officers, now in the process of organizing Divisional Supply Trains, or who will be detailed for such a duty in the future, with complete information for their use in the organiza tion, administration, training, and operation of their companies. It represents a compilation of all available data on the subject, from such widely varied sources as the experiences of motor truck companies organized at the time of the Punitive Expedition into Mexico, and information gathered from the French auto mobile service. This information the authors have endeavored to compile in as well organized and as well balanced a form as possible, though they have not tried to make it apply wholly to our special mission in France. With its complete detail as to the duties of all members of motor truck companies, as to the Opera tion of motor trucks, and as to truck equipment, truck mechanism and the cause and remedy of truck troubles, it is designed to be of use to every truckmaster and chauffeur. As in the motor transport service each man is so largely a separate unit, he must be a man of intelligence and have a clear understanding of the make-up and operation of his organization. It is hoped, too, that the book will be useful to officers of other arms. The authors know from experience what a hazy idea the majority of officers of other arms have of the Supply Train, just where it fits in the organization of the division and just what its function is; they would be at a loss in the field to know whom to consult when the services of motor transportation were needed. Chapters II and III, it is believed, will be especially valuable to fill this need. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Efficient Railway Operation After many years of experience in railway construction, operation and administration, the author has published a series of works on those subjects, principally in relation to the successive stages of regulation of the railway system of the United States by means of legislation, both State and national. These works are largely the outcome of the author's own personal knowledge, experience and research, and reference is herein made to them, in some cases, where the same matters have been discussed at greater length in the former volumes. It is the aim of the present work to describe the progressive development of efficiency in the operation of the railway system of the United States, as compared with similar progress in other countries. It has been prepared at the suggestion of many persons who have inquired for authoritative works on the subject, that would be of value especially to students in technical schools and to junior railroad employees, as well as of interest to the general reader. With this two-fold object in view, there have been added, in appendices, very complete tables of statistics and much strictly technical information, drawn from official sources. Reference to authorities and explanations of terms have been given in footnotes. The work is devoted to operation, as distinguished from administration. It deals with facts, and not with opinions; therefore, it does not discuss matters of finance, or rates or labor questions. The author desires to acknowledge the valued assistance of railroad officials and friends in bringing the information down to the present year, and for much that is included in the chapter on the use of railroads in war-time. In the revision of technical matter, preparation of index and addenda, correction of proofs and general supervision of the work through the press, he has had the aid of Charles A. Hammond, C. E. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twentieth Century Manual of Railway Station Service: Freight, Baggage and Passenger Departments All information embodied in this manual is eminently practical; the blank forms, general laws and special methods herein given are to be found in printed form in railroad publications only; and the multiplicity of details set forth in the work, regarding which the business world is almost wholly ignorant, is absolutely astonishing. The manual, therefore, is not only an admirable text-book for the student but it is a practical reference book as well for the jobber, the shipper, or any man who pays freight, and as such is commended to their attention.
