Book excerpt: Achieving a sustainable, reliable drinking water supply has emerged in recent years as an increasingly important goal, not only in the United States but also worldwide. This is being driven by population growth, increasing water demands, declining groundwater levels, contamination of water sources, greater awareness of adverse environmental impacts, concern regarding the potential impacts of global warming, and many other factors. Among the many methods that are being applied to achieve this goal, managed aquifer recharge is proving to be viable and cost-effective. Recent advances in the science of aquifer recharge, including the geochemistry, microbiology, and hydraulics, provide a strong foundation for the successful implementation of aquifer recharge projects. However, to achieve success, it is necessary to understand the lessons learned, taking advantage of good ideas that worked and not repeating the ideas that did not work. The overall goal of this project was to identify technical variables that result in successful design, operation, and maintenance of sustainable underground storage (SUS) facilities. The key objectives of the project were to increase the available knowledge base of SUS facilities throughout the United States, survey a variety underground storage facilities, identify and evaluate sites where SUS performance failed to meet objectives, address the use of SUS to reduce the vulnerability of water facilities, and create an easy-to-use, practical guidance document and outreach program to distribute research findings. The final report discusses surface and well recharge methods and includes a concise summary of the most important lessons learned from the 22 operating and failed recharge sites that were visited. It also includes a proposed analytical approach that may be applied for water utilities to reduce their vulnerability to service interruption and thereby enhance their system reliability. The appendix includes case studies for the 18 operating and four failed SUS facilities that were visited as part of this project. These are presented on a CD, providing useful perspectives regarding how different water utility systems have approached the need for SUS.

Book excerpt: There may be nearly 300,000 waste sites in the United States where ground water and soil are contaminated. Yet recent studies question whether existing technologies can restore contaminated ground water to drinking water standards, which is the goal for most sites and the result expected by the public. How can the nation balance public health, technological realities, and cost when addressing ground water cleanup? This new volume offers specific conclusions, outlines research needs, and recommends policies that are technologically sound while still protecting health and the environment. Authored by the top experts from industry and academia, this volume: Examines how the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the subsurface environment, as well as the properties of contaminants, complicate the cleanup task. Reviews the limitations of widely used conventional pump-and-treat cleanup systems, including detailed case studies. Evaluates a range of innovative cleanup technologies and the barriers to their full implementation. Presents specific recommendations for policies and practices in evaluating contamination sites, in choosing remediation technologies, and in setting appropriate cleanup goals.

Book excerpt: This report presents an analysis of the cost of using permeable reactive barriers to remediate contaminated ground water. When possible, these costs are compared with the cost of pump-and-treat technology for similar situations. Permeable reactive barriers are no longer perceived as an innovative remediation technology but are rapidly maturing and may be considered as a standard remediation technology, similar to pump-and-treat. PRB cost information was obtained from a variety of sources, including reports, surveys, and interviews. Costs were broken out into four general categories: site characterization, design, construction, and operation and maintenance. Subcategories within these four further detailed the costs.

Book excerpt: Linking theory and application in a way that is clear and understandable, Groundwater Lowering in Construction: A Practical Guide to Dewatering, Second Edition uses the authors’ extensive engineering experience to offer practical guidance on the planning, design, and implementation of groundwater control systems under real conditions. Discover engineering methods that can help you improve working conditions, increase project viability, and reduce excavation costs. In the decade since publication of this book’s first edition, groundwater lowering and dewatering activities have been increasingly integrated into the wider ground engineering schemes on major excavations to help provide stable and workable conditions for construction below groundwater level. Consequently, many engineering ventures now require a more in-depth assessment of potential environmental impacts of dewatering and groundwater control, and this book details the latest best practices to evaluate and address them. Includes New Chapters Covering: Cutoff methods used for groundwater exclusion Issues associated with permanent or long-term groundwater control systems Groundwater control technologies used on contaminated sites Methods needed to understand, predict, and mitigate potential environmental impacts of groundwater control works Updated to reflect the crucial technological and application advances shaping construction processes, this book contains valuable direction that can give you a true competitive advantage in the planning and execution of temporary and permanent dewatering works. The authors cover cutting-edge methods and key subjects, such as the history of dewatering, working on contaminated sites, site investigation techniques, and operation and maintenance issues, including health, safety, and legal aspects. Written for practising engineers and geologists as well as postgraduate engineering students, this updated manual on design and practice provides numerous case histories and extensive references to enhance understanding.
