Book excerpt: Accompanying our 2020-21 Haegue Yang exhibition at Tate St Ives, this beautiful exhibition book focuses on the context of the Cornish landscape and its ancient archaeological heritage as an important point of departure for Yang. A vital expansion of the ideas that punctuate the Tate St Ives exhibition, the exhibition catalogue brings together installation photography and new texts on the artist. Yang's work combines materials, theories and cultural references to make astute and surprising connections between local contexts and wider geographies and histories. Recurring themes of migration, postcolonial diasporas, political struggle and social mobility underpin Yang's research, culminating in a body of work that is an apposite comment on our own time. Born in South Korea in 1971, Haegue Yang is renowned for creating immersive environments from a diverse range of materials. Yang's sculptures and installations conjure abstract narratives which play with our sensory pre-conceptions of scent, sound, light and tactility. Often using recognisable household objects, her work liberates forms from their functional context and applies new connotations and meanings to them. Interweaving industrially made objects with labour intensive and craft-based processes, Yang articulates her interest in folk and pagan cultures, and their deep connection with seasonal rituals in relation to natural phenomena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English artist Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) created a unique combination of subtropical garden and sculpture park at Trewyn in St.Ives -- a haven of peace that acted as a showplace for her sculpture, a working environment, and an opportunity for Hepworth to pursue her other great love, gardening. This book is a beautiful record of the plants and sculptures at Trewyn throughout the seasons; it explores the evolution of the garden, its purpose, the placement of the works, and the relationship between Hepworth's abstract sculptures and the natural forms that surround them. With specially commissioned photographs taken in all seasons, two essays on Hepworth's work at Trewyn, and full descriptions of both plants and sculptures, this is a wonderful addition to the literature on St.Ives and on Barbara Hepworth.

Book excerpt: In 1884, Whistler and Sickert stayed in the remote Cornish fishing village of St Ives. From that time onwards it has been the inspiration and home of many notable painters. The 1985 exhibition at the Tate Gallery focused on the years 1939-64, the era of Wallis, Nicholson, Hepworth, Lanyon, Wynter, Leach, Heron, Frost and Gabo, to name but a few of the 28 artists represented. It reawakened an interest in St Ives which led to the founding of the Tate Gallery St Ives eight years later. The biographical notes, exhibition histories and bibliographies on each of the artists have been fully updated for the second edition.

Book excerpt: "In this new exploration of modern art and St Ives, works by St Ives artists are looked at in the context of their contemporaries in Europe, North America and beyond. The work of this period includes the utopian ideal of constructivism and the tradition of craft and the handmade. Paintings, sculpture and ceramics - drawn from public and private collections in the UK and abroad - richly illustrate how artists' engagement with St Ives was a part of the global art scene of the twentieth century." -- back cover.

Book excerpt: In our time, Bernard Leach has done for pottery what Henry Moore has done for scuplture. This... infinitely rewarding book is an account of his pilgrimage through life.' Times Bernard Leach (1887-1979) was as renowned in Japan and the East as in Europe and America, both as an artist-craftsman and as a thinker. His interpretation of the traditions of the Orient in the making of pots - and in evolving a philosophy of life - was a lodestar for many potters in the West. Beyond East and West, first published in 1978, is more than an autobiography. Full of sharply-etched and amusing recollections, it contains much of Leach's deeper thought and a great deal too about the practical application of his ideas. Its recurrent theme is the meeting of East and West at all levels - artistic, cultural, social, political.

This book was released on 2023-10-13 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book explores an eco-feminist approach to dance movement psychotherapy, with an emphasis on the posthuman possibilities of differently enabled bodies and fostering social, political and environmental justice. Using the lenses of posthumanism and new materialism, this book examines the points of convergence among dance movement psychotherapy, eco-psychotherapy and critical disability studies. It maps out the experience of building care, empathy and kinship and explores ecologically informed, embodied practices and research while offering new perspectives on these practices. Structured using thematic ‘interruptions’ between chapters to anchor the reading experience and provide coherence, chapters include case study extracts as examples from the practice, spanning group work and individual therapy with autistic and learning disabled children and young people, as well as with neurotypical adult clients in private practice. Bringing together practice and research in dance movement psychotherapy along with cutting-edge theoretical perspectives of new materialism and posthumanism, the book will be of great interest to researchers and students of dance therapy, arts therapies, eco-psychotherapy and disability studies. It will also be useful to practitioners and therapists in psychotherapy and well-being services.
