This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The open-loop characteristics of a Large-Gap Magnetic Suspension System (LGMSS) were studied and numerical results are presented. The LGMSS considered provides five-degree-of-freedom control. The suspended element is a cylinder that contains a core composed of permanent magnet material. The magnetic actuators are air core electromagnets mounted in a planar array. Configurations utilizing five, six, seven, and eight electromagnets were investigated and all configurations were found to be controllable from coil currents and observable from suspended element positions. Results indicate that increasing the number of coils has an insignificant effect on mode shapes and frequencies. Groom, Nelson J. and Britcher, Colin P. Langley Research Center RTOP 590-14-11-02...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists have learned to use liquid and gaseous helium to overcome the limitations imposed by the usual wind and water tunnels for testing the performance of aircraft or the behavior of the atmosphere. This book covers fundamental studies of the turbulence problem, practical applications of turbulence, superfluid turbulence, cryogenic turbulence research, and new types of miniature flow instrumentation, all which are crucial for high Reynolds number research. This state-of-the-art presentation will interest physicists in fluid dynamics, engineers working with turbulent flows, and naval and aerospace engineers testing realistic parameter ranges.

Book excerpt: Cities and Their Vital Systems asks basic questions about the longevity, utility, and nature of urban infrastructures; analyzes how they grow, interact, and change; and asks how, when, and at what cost they should be replaced. Among the topics discussed are problems arising from increasing air travel and airport congestion; the adequacy of water supplies and waste treatment; the impact of new technologies on construction; urban real estate values; and the field of "telematics," the combination of computers and telecommunications that makes money machines and national newspapers possible.

Book excerpt: An analytical model of a five degree of freedom magnetic suspension and positioning system is presented. The suspended element is a cylinder which is composed of permanent magnet material and the magnetic actuators are air core electromagnets mounted in a planar array. The analytical model consists of an open loop representation of the suspension and positioning system with electromagnet currents as inputs and displacements and rates in inertial coordinates as outputs. The uncontrolled degree of freedom is rotation about the long axis of the suspended cylinder. Groom, Nelson J. Langley Research Center NASA-TM-100671, NAS 1.15:100671 RTOP 585-01-61-08...
