Download or read book Determinants of Remittances: Recent Evidence Using Data on Internal Migrants in Vietnam written by Thai Hung Pham, Barry Reilly, Yoko Niimi and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This paper examines the determinants of remittance behavior for Vietnam using data from the 2004 Vietnam Migration Survey on internal migrants. It considers how, among other things, the vulnerability of a migrant's life at the destination, their link to relatives back home, and the time spent at the destination affect remittances. The paper finds that migrants act as risk-averse economic agents and send remittances back to the household of origin as part of an insurance exercise in the face of economic uncertainty. Remittances are also found to be driven by a migrant's labor market earnings level. The paper highlights the important role of remittances in providing an effective means of risk-coping and mutual support within the family.

Download or read book Open House written by Scott Russell and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2010-06-25 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a keen eye and ear for story, Hockey Night in Canada host and bestselling author Scott Russell chronicles a sport both exotic and familiar -- curling. Canadians have a unique enthusiasm for curling. It transcends barriers. World-class athletes curl with absolute beginners, and grandmothers and grandsons take to the ice together. There are more than a million registered curlers in Canada, and millions more tune in to watch curling events on television. The outpouring of emotion that followed Sandra Schmirler’s death revealed that curlers are counted among our national heroes. Curling doesn’t offer the excitement of other winter sports -- no thunderous body checks, no vertical leaps, no million-dollar superstars. But when Scott Russell visited curling clubs across the country, attended the Brier in Calgary and the Olympic games in Salt Lake City, and spent time with curlers, from celebrities like Colleen Jones to the unsung father, uncle and son-team who built the Eagle Hill Curling Club in Alberta, he discovered the magical allure of curling. As Canadian Olympic gold medalist Joan McCusker said of curling’s appeal: “Ordinary people doing extraordinary things is the attraction.” Open House takes us inside the world of curling, and captures the spirit and lore of the sport, the dedication and passion of its participants.

Book excerpt: For the first time in their lives, Virginia Prentiss and her husband, Charlie, do the unexpected. When Virginia receives the news that she has developed terminal cancer, she and Charlie decide to run away to uproot their orderly lives and enjoy Virginia's remaining days living life as fully as they can. As they look for a place to start a new business, they stumble upon an abandoned convent in the Appalachian Mountains and fall in love with the graceful charm and serenity of the place. Against the advice of family and friends, they decide to spend their remaining time together in this new community a far cry from the life they left behind. Their new life is not without oddities. For all its beauty, the old building needs extensive repairs; what's more, the Prentisses find local residents to be eclectic and somewhat unusual folks with little regard for material things. And then there are the legends about the mineral springs that dot their property and fables about the Hopewell tribe who inhabited the area in ancient times. As time passes and the Prentisses become more open to the new surroundings, the folklore of the area begins to invade Virginia's dreams. Her sleeping hours are rich with nocturnal adventures, shared with both the indigenous people of the ancient days and the former convent's more recent occupants; her dreams become a sort of mystical hodgepodge. Finally, on a raw autumn day, her dreams lead her on an arduous trek into the property's deepest woods, where she discovers a hidden glen and her world is changed forever.
