Book Synopsis Anthropology as Ethics by : T. M. S. Evens
Download or read book Anthropology as Ethics written by T. M. S. Evens and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropology as Ethics is concerned with rethinking anthropology by rethinking the nature of reality. It develops the ontological implications of a defining thesis of the Manchester School: that all social orders exhibit basically conflicting underlying principles. Drawing especially on Continental social thought, including Wittgenstein, Merleau-Ponty, Levinas, Dumont, Bourdieu and others, and on pre-modern sources such as the Hebrew bible, the Nuer, the Dinka, and the Azande, the book mounts a radical study of the ontology of self and other in relation to dualism and nondualism. It demonstrates how the self-other dichotomy disguises fundamental ambiguity or nondualism, thus obscuring the essentially ethical, dilemmatic, and sacrificial nature of all social life. It also proposes a reason other than dualist, nihilist, and instrumental, one in which logic is seen as both inimical to and continuous with value. Without embracing absolutism, the book makes ambiguity and paradox the foundation of an ethical response to the pervasive anti-foundationalism of much postmodern thought. T. M. S. (Terry) Evens is Professor of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received his Ph.D. at the University of Manchester in 1971. He has held visiting appointments at the University of Chicago, the Ecoles des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, the University of Calcutta, and Asmara University, Eritrea. He is author of Two Kinds of Rationality: Kibbutz Democracy and Generational Conflict (1995), and co-editor of the collections, Transcendence in Society: Case Studies (1990) and The Manchester School: Practice and Ethnographic Praxis in Anthropology (2006). Drawn especially to theory and phenomenology, he has sought from the beginnings of his professional career to isolate, identify, and critically explore philosophical underpinnings of empirical anthropology.

Book Synopsis Design Anthropology by : Alison Clarke
Download or read book Design Anthropology written by Alison Clarke and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design Anthropology brings together leading international design theorists, consultants and anthropologists to explore the changing object culture of the 21st century. Decades ago, product designers used basic market research to fine-tune their designs for consumer success. Today the design process has been radically transformed, with the user center-stage in the design process. From design ethnography to culture probing, innovative designers are employing anthropological methods to elicit the meanings rather than the mere form and function of objects. This important volume provides a fascinating exploration of the issues facing the shapers of our increasingly complex material world. The text features case studies and investigations covering a diverse range of academic disciplines. From IKEA and anti-design to erotic twenty-first-century needlework and online interior decoration, the book positions itself at the intersections of design, anthropology, material culture, architecture, and sociology.

Book Synopsis Living with One's Past by : Norman S. Care
Download or read book Living with One's Past written by Norman S. Care and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1996 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcoholism, major depression, debilitating shyness or extreme anxiety may all lead to personal failings and even moral wrongdoing that we can neither explain nor ignore. How are we to deal with these failings in our own pasts? How should we think about 'agency' or responsibility in other people who suffer from such difficulties? What does morality require of us in living with these people? In this original and eloquent work, Norman S. Care addresses these questions from both theoretical and personal perspectives, just as John Rawls's A Theory of Justice offered a set of principles by which the members of a society might reconcile themselves to their own and others' failings. Along the way, Care challenges the idea that individuals are masters of their own fate, discusses the 'persona moralism' that enables us to blame ourselves and others, and considers in a positive way the famous twelve-step Alcoholics Anonymous program, interesting because it acknowledges that 'recovery' may not occur for some alcoholics who attempt to follow it. Living with One's Past will be of interest not only to philosophers, psychologists, health-care and social service providers, but also to anyone whose life has been affected by his or her own or others' moral failings.
