Book Synopsis Innovation and Empire in Turkey by : Tuncay Zorlu
Download or read book Innovation and Empire in Turkey written by Tuncay Zorlu and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04-29 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ottoman naval technology underwent a transformation under the rule of Sultan Selim III. New types of sailing warships such as two- and three-decked galleons, frigates and corvettes began to dominate the Ottoman fleet, rendering the galley-type oared ships obsolete. This period saw technological innovations such as the adoption of the systematic copper sheathing of the hulls and bottoms of Ottoman warships from 1792-93 onwards and the construction of the first dry dock in the Golden Horn. The changing face of the Ottoman Navy was facilitated by the influence of the British, Swedish and French in modernising both the shipbuilding sector and the conduct of naval warfare. Through such measures as training Ottoman shipbuilders, heavy reliance on help from foreign powers gave way to a new trajectory of modernization. Using this evidence Zorlu argues that although the Ottoman Empire was a major and modern independent power in this period, some technological dependence on Europe remained.
Book Synopsis A Catalogue of the Turkish Manuscripts in the John Rylands University Library at Manchester by : Jan Schmidt
Download or read book A Catalogue of the Turkish Manuscripts in the John Rylands University Library at Manchester written by Jan Schmidt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-02-03 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the six hundred years of its existence, innumerable of manuscripts with, mostly, Turkish texts were produced in the Ottoman Empire. These are mainly preserved in libraries in the countries that once were part of that extended empire; a lesser number of such manuscripts had their origin in central Asia, Persia and India. From the sixteenth century in particular, interest for these handwritten books increased in Europe and found their way to the libraries of scholars, book collectors and universities. The John Rylands University Library is one such repository of Turkish manuscripts of both Ottoman and wider Asian provenance. Most of these manuscripts, among which a number of unique, rare and luxuriously produced items, were originally gathered by a rich mine owner, the 25th Earl of Crawford. In this book, the collection is for the first time described in a detailed and systematic way.
Book Synopsis The Letter of Mara bar Sarapion in Context by : Annette Merz
Download or read book The Letter of Mara bar Sarapion in Context written by Annette Merz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Letter of Mara bar Sarapion to his son – preserved in a single Syriac manuscript (7th. cent. CE) – still speaks to its readers, evocatively depicting the dramatic situation of a nobleman imprisoned after the Roman capture of Samosata, capital of Commagene. The letter is best known today for a passage on the “wise king of the Jews,” which may be one of the earliest pagan testimonies concerning Jesus Christ. Ongoing controversy over the letter’s date, nature, and purpose has, however, led to the widespread neglect of this intriguing document. In the present volume, Merz and Tieleman have brought together cutting-edge research from an interdisciplinary team of leading experts that significantly advances our appreciation of the letter and its historical context.

Book Synopsis From Empire to Republic by : Taner Akçam
Download or read book From Empire to Republic written by Taner Akçam and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2008-02-29 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taner Akçam is one of the first Turkish academics to acknowledge and discuss openly the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman-Turkish government in 1915. This book discusses western political policies towards the region generally, and represents the first serious scholarly attempt to understand the Genocide from a perpetrator rather than victim perspective, and to contextualize those events within Turkey's political history. By refusing to acknowledge the fact of genocide, successive Turkish governments not only perpetuate massive historical injustice, but also pose a fundamental obstacle to Turkey's democratization today.
Book Synopsis State and Peasant in the Ottoman Empire by : Huri Islamoglu - Inan
Download or read book State and Peasant in the Ottoman Empire written by Huri Islamoglu - Inan and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1994-07-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State and Peasant in the Ottoman Empire studies the dynamics of Ottoman peasant economy in the sixteenth century. First, it shows that contrary to the conventional wisdom about the 'stationariness'of the Asian agrarian economies, Ottoman peasant economy witnessed substantial growth in response to population increase, urban commercial expansion and to increased taxation demands. Second, the book argues that economic development did not take place independently of political structures, of the state. This meant that in the light of the fiscal and legitimation concerns of the Ottoman state and contrary to the assumptions of the models of economic development, changes in population and in commercial demand did not result in the disruption of the integrity of the small peasant holding as the primary unit of production. The book develops these arguments in the context of a detailed empirical study of the economic trends, of the state rules or institutions that embodied the relations of revenue extraction, and of exchange in Ottoman Anatolia.
