Book excerpt: "KDB's project may be defined as post-photographic: in re-reading and re-using, in a new way, photographic images culled from various magazines, these latter ones lose their status of plain photography and the book that of a classic photo-book. In a similar way, the artist may be defined as "photographer without a camera": the framing broadens itself, taking place no longer in the lens, but in the eye, whereas the vision occurs directly in the hand, becoming thereby more physical and tactile. ... KDB doesn't write, but she compiles notebooks made of sentences and headlines cut out of newspapers and magazines, appropriating also in this case someone else's vocabulary to express in a neutral way her own story." -- http://www.avarie-publishing.com/files/press_kit_LONG_KDB_web.pdf (as viewed on February 24, 2015).

Book excerpt: Graham Boynton's Wild is the definitive biography of photographer Peter Beard, a larger-than-life icon who pushed the boundaries of art and scandalized international high society with his high-profile affairs. He was the original 20th century “enfant terrible” with the looks of a Greek god who blazed like a comet across the worlds of art, photography, and fame. The scion of several old WASP fortunes, he was by instinct an adventurer, and the more dangerous the escapade, the better: whether he was hunting big game in Africa, ingesting epic quantities of drugs, or pursuing the most beautiful women in the world. Among his friends were Jackie Onassis, Andy Warhol, and Francis Bacon. When Peter Beard died in 2020 after mysteriously disappearing from his Montauk home, he remained an enigma to even his closest friends. Journalist and author Graham Boynton was a friend for more than 30 years, spending time with Beard at his bush camp in Africa, in London, and at his Long Island home. From hundreds of Boynton’s interviews with Beard’s closest friends, former lovers, and fellow artists comes this intimate portrait of a man Sir Mick Jagger called “a visionary.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The former US poet laureate has crafted poems full of “unexpected insights, charms, droll observations, self-mockery, and well-earned wisdom” (Rain Taxi). In The Back Chamber, Donald Hall illuminates the evocative, iconic objects of deep memory—a cowbell, a white stone perfectly round, a three-legged milking stool—that serve to foreground the rich meditations on time and mortality that run through this remarkable collection. While Hall’s devoted readers will recognize many of his long-standing preoccupations—baseball, the family farm, love, sex, and friendship—what will strike them as new is the fierce, pitiless poignancy he reveals as his own life’s end comes into view. The Back Chamber is far from being death-haunted, but rather is lively, irreverent, erotic, hilarious, ironic, and sly—full of the life-affirming energy that has made Donald Hall one of America’s most popular and enduring poets. “For the reader boiling in triple-digit SoCal heat at the end of the summer, Donald Hall’s The Back Chamber: Poems arrives like a sudden cloudburst and shower of cooling rain . . . A former U.S. poet laureate, Hall has always had this elemental power—to vividly evoke his particular New England climate and geography so that it can’t be mistaken for any other—but what is more unexpected in this new collection of poems, his 16th, is passion.” —Los Angeles Times “The former U.S. poet laureate reaches his 20th book in unmistakably honest form, aggressively plain and unfailingly open about sex, old age, suicide, recovery, the friendship of poets, the business of poetry, dogs, New Hampshire, and baseball.” —Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is the result of five years of writing, layout and design to produce a book that demonstrates my lifetime passion for photography while pursuing an executive career as a financial development and estate planning officer at four national non-profit organizations. Editing and critiquing after many years was an emotional and humbling experience. The 70's though the 90's were both exciting and difficult while stimulating and provoking for me, my career and family life. In 2013 I retired to pursue a second full-time career in photojournalism, book editing and writing. My productive and rewarding professional career provided my best memories. They are in this book of the friends, associates and "everyday people" I met along the way. I stayed the student and follower of the best photographers, illustrators and writers of the time. Working side-by-side with some of them over the years kept me focused on my personal photography assignments as I developed my photojournalistic style. This is my story about everyday people, places and events in animated grey-tones and natural light color. My father always encouraged my interest in photography, and some times writing. He once told me "it was silly" but encouraged me anyway. Over the years during family visits home, he gave me books that he found at antique stores, yard sales and flea markets. They included. Photographs: A Collector's Guide by Robert Blodgett, copyrighted and published in 1979; The Great Themes copyrighted and reprinted by Times, Inc., in 1970 and 1971; The Great Photographers, Revised Edition by Time-Life Books, Inc., 1983; and The Story of Photography: An Illustrated History originally produced by Editoriale Jaca Book, Milan, Italy in 1983 with an English language edition copyright (c) 1983 by Aperture. My father died July 8, 1996. He liked to share his favorite thought about photography. He once told me, "No one ever dies or is forgotten under heaven as long as there is someone to say or remember their name in a portrait or photograph". Thanks, Dad.

Book excerpt: After beginning his career as a photojournalist for a daily newspaper in southern California, Dan Winters moved to New York to begin a celebrated career that has since led to more than one hundred awards, including the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Magazine Photography. An immensely respected portrait photographer, Dan is well known for an impeccable use of light, colour, and depth in his evocative images. In Road to Seeing, Dan shares his journey to becoming a photographer, as well as key moments in his career that have influenced and informed the decisions he has made and the path he has taken. Though this book appeals to the broader photography audience, it speaks primarily to the student of photography--whether enrolled in school or not--and addresses such topics as creating a visual language; the history of photography; the portfolio; street photography; personal projects; his portraiture work; and the need for key characteristics such as perseverance, awareness, curiosity, and reverence. By relaying both personal experiences and a kind of philosophy on photography, Road to Seeing tells the reader how one photographer carved a path for himself, and in so doing, helps equip the reader to forge his own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seen on Tucker Carlson Tonight! USA Today and Wall Street Journal Bestseller! The inside story of the laptop that exposed the president’s dirtiest secret. When a drug-addled Hunter Biden abandoned his waterlogged computer at a Mac repair shop in Delaware in the spring of 2019, just six days before his father announced his candidacy for the United States presidency, it became the ticking time bomb in the shadows of Joe Biden’s campaign. The dirty secrets contained in Hunter’s laptop almost derailed his father’s presidential campaign and ignited one of the greatest media coverups in American history. This is the unvarnished story of what’s really inside the laptop and what China knows about the Bidens, by the New York Post journalist who brought it into the open. It exposes the coordinated censorship operation by Big Tech, the media establishment, and former intelligence operatives to stifle the New York Post’s coverage, in a chilling exercise of raw political power three weeks before the 2020 election. A treasure trove of corporate documents, emails, text messages, photographs, and voice recordings, spanning a decade, the laptop provided the first evidence that President Joe Biden was involved in his son’s ventures in China, Ukraine, and beyond, despite his repeated denials. This intimate insight into Hunter’s dissolute lifestyle shows he was incapable of holding down a job, let alone being paid tens of millions of dollars in high-powered international business deals by foreign interests, unless he had something else of value to sell—which of course he did. He was the son of the vice president who would go on to become the leader of the free world.
