Book excerpt: Izzy Sage was looking for answers when she took a job as keeper of the death gate in Detroit. Unfortunately, the answers being delivered aren't what she was hoping for. Personal worries have to take a backseat, though, because the reaper world is in an uproar.News that their former leader Renley Hatfield was working with the enemy has spread, but that doesn't mean the good guys can trust everybody that's left. With that in mind, Cormack Grimlock has closed ranks. Only those in their inner circle are allowed access to all the information. Sadly, there is very little information to go around.Despite that, Belle Isle is hopping with activity thanks to an influx of furries who are running rampant across the island for a local convention. Even the mysterious death of one of their own in the waters off the yacht club doesn't dampen their enthusiasm. Izzy isn't convinced that the death is an accident but they don't have proof otherwise, so she looks elsewhere for adventure. Then, in the middle of the night, adventure comes to her in the form of Emmet Grimlock, the missing Grimlock patriarch who disappeared through the gate weeks before.A dream leads Izzy to the gate in time to watch him cross over, but Emmet's memory is tainted and he has nothing to offer by way of leads. While dealing with his return, Izzy's grandfather finally decides to make a visit, too. He senses Izzy needs him, which means even more trouble is on the way.Unauthorized gates are popping up all over Detroit, and revenants are crossing through them. The reapers are on the verge of war, and Izzy might be the only one who can save them. She might've come to Detroit alone but now Izzy is amongst family. She's going to need all of them to unravel the tangled lines of her past and survive to forge a future. Is she up for the challenge?

Book excerpt: Jesus and Moses are Buried in India, Birthplace of Abraham and the Hebrews! is a new kind of biblical history that brings out facts, not myths and guessing games. Unlike priests and preachers, who exhort their followers to swallow lies and spiritual ordure, I don't want my readers to swallow what I say naively. They should check all my references for themselves. This book follows the ancestors of the Hebrews from Eastern Siberia down to what is now the Indian subcontinenet; later, to what is now Israel. You'll be surprised to find out who and what Jehovah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Jesus really were. The book also blasts dangerous myths, such as the Christian fundamentalists' assertion that "God" wants nearly all Jews to die in a "Battle of Armageddon." That war happened in India, thousands of years ago. We're now in Millennium 2000. It's time for mankind to let truth take over his existence.

Book excerpt: A SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER ‘Tender, fascinating … Lucid and illuminating’ Robert Macfarlane Funerary rituals show us what people thought about mortality; how they felt about loss; what they believed came next. From Roman cremations and graveside feasts, to deviant burials with heads rearranged, from richly furnished Anglo Saxon graves to the first Christian burial grounds in Wales, Buried provides an alternative history of the first millennium in Britain. As she did with her pre-history of Britain in Ancestors, Professor Alice Roberts combines archaeological finds with cutting-edge DNA research and written history to shed fresh light on how people lived: by examining the stories of the dead. Book excerpt: The field of forensic archaeology has developed over recent years from being a branch of conventional archaeology into a well-established discipline in its own right. Forensic Approaches to Buried Remains takes an innovative approach to the subject by placing the role of the forensic archaeologist within the wider forensic environment; it identifies new areas of interdisciplinary research and practice, and evaluates practical difficulties. The authors see this book as a reflection of the subject’s development, and as a knowledge base for the next generation of forensic archaeologists. Areas covered include: Search logistics, integration and specialist search scenarios Levels of confidence in site search and elimination Urban and rural landscape reconstruction in both short and long term cases The integration of cadaver dogs and earth-moving machinery The recovery of multiple evidence types Sampling strategies, spatial relevance and dating Multiple burial scenarios As part of the Essential Forensic Science book series this book will provide students and practitioners alike with an invaluable resource outlining both the major developments in the discipline, as well as original approaches to the search for, and recovery of buried remains.

Occasionally, they wind up in the backyard. As towns grew in Cuyahoga County during the late 1800s, many of its cemeteries were relocated to make room for urban sprawl. But not all of these graves made the journey. Author William G. Krejci tracks down more than fifty displaced cemeteries throughout the Greater Cleveland area. Discover the Revolutionary War veterans, famous scientists and illustrious dignitaries found beneath gas stations and grocery stores in this eerie history of Cuyahoga County’s forgotten dead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of the Archaeology of Death and Burial reviews the current state of mortuary archaeology and its practice, highlighting its often contentious place in the modern socio-politics of archaeology. It contains forty-four chapters which focus on the history of the discipline and its current scientific techniques and methods. Written by leading, international scholars in the field, it derives its examples and case studies from a wide range of time periods, such as the middle palaeolithic to the twentieth century, and geographical areas which include Europe, North and South America, Africa, and Asia. Combining up-to-date knowledge of relevant archaeological research with critical assessments of the theme and an evaluation of future research trajectories, it draws attention to the social, symbolic, and theoretical aspects of interpreting mortuary archaeology. The volume is well-illustrated with maps, plans, photographs, and illustrations and is ideally suited for students and researchers.

Others cant see the trees for the forestthey miss the wondrous details all around them. So why not look instead at both the forest and the trees? This commentary on Pauls letter to the Colossians guides you in doing just that. Even though we will be exploring ancient biblical cultures and learning plenty about the Greek language, no prior academic training is needed. Technical terms have been set aside. Instead, with everyday language we will discover the big picture and revel in the fine details of this stunning letter, amazed by how God is still speaking these same words today to contemporary personal and social challenges. We will not then be tourists rapidly zipping through Colossians as if on a monotonous interstate highway. Instead we will be hiking our way through this letter, step by step, phrase by phrase, finding joy in Gods truth and growing in our faith. Come and join the journey.

Book excerpt: In "Buried Indians, Laurie Hovell McMillin presents the struggle of her hometown, Trempealeau, Wisconsin, to determine whether platform mounds atop Trempealeau Mountain constitute authentic Indian mounds. This dispute, as McMillin subtly demonstrates, reveals much about the attitude and interaction-past and present-between the white and Indian inhabitants of this Midwestern town. McMillin's account, rich in detail and sensitive to current political issues of American Indian interactions with the dominant European American culture, locates two opposing views: one that denies a Native American presence outright and one that asserts its long history and ruthless destruction. The highly reflective oral histories McMillin includes turn "Buried Indians into an accessible, readable portrait of a uniquely American culture clash and a dramatic narrative grounded in people's genuine perceptions of what the platform mounds mean.

Book excerpt: Four Warring States texts discovered during recent decades challenge longstanding understandings of Chinese intellectual history. The discovery of previously unknown philosophical texts from the Axial Age is revolutionizing our understanding of Chinese intellectual history. Buried Ideas presents and discusses four texts found on brush-written slips of bamboo and their seemingly unprecedented political philosophy. Written in the regional script of Chu during the Warring States period (475–221 BCE), all of the works discuss Yao’s abdication to Shun and are related to but differ significantly from the core texts of the classical period, such as the Mencius and Zhuangzi. Notably, these works evince an unusually meritocratic stance, and two even advocate abdication over hereditary succession as a political ideal. Sarah Allan includes full English translations and her own modern-character editions of the four works examined: Tang Yú zhi dao, Zigao, Rongchengshi, and Bao xun. In addition, she provides an introduction to Chu-script bamboo-slip manuscripts and the complex issues inherent in deciphering them.
