Book excerpt: Distilled wisdom from two publishing pros for every serious nonfiction author in search of big commercial success. Over 50,000 books are published in America each year, the vast majority nonfiction. Even so, many writers are stymied in getting their books published, never mind gaining significant attention for their ideas—and substantial sales. This is the book editors have been recommending to would-be authors. Filled with trade secrets, Thinking Like Your Editor explains: • why every proposal should ask and answer five key questions; • how to tailor academic writing to a general reader, without losing ideas or dumbing down your work; • how to write a proposal that editors cannot ignore; • why the most important chapter is your introduction; • why "simple structure, complex ideas" is the mantra for creating serious nonfiction; • why smart nonfiction editors regularly reject great writing but find new arguments irresistible. Whatever the topic, from history to business, science to philosophy, law, or gender studies, this book is vital to every serious nonfiction writer.

Book excerpt: Adam Bede has it good. Writing pop songs for teen idol Christie Squires isn’t much of a creative challenge, but it pays for his champagne lifestyle. He’s got his boyfriend Lyle, a Serious Person and regular CNN geopolitical contributor, his bestie and songwriting partner Callie, and his partners in ChrisCo, the industrial combine behind their manufactured superstar. And he’s even got his bipolar illness managed without completely dulling his creativity. Until one day, Christie decides she wants to be Taken Seriously, and sues ChrisCo for child labor violations. And just like that, Adam’s cash cow is no more. As if that wasn’t bad enough, along comes Sam Sparks, brilliant talented young songwriter and social activist, who’s got the hots for Adam’s boyfriend – and who may be the Serious Person who’s a better match for Lyle than frivolous Adam… When a cable channel creates a reality show to find the best singer/songwriter in America, Adam knows he has only one way to save his career, and his relationship. And if winning that contest involves going off his medications, going a little crazy (just a little, he swears), isn’t it worth the risk? Especially when he discovers that Christie, and Sam, are his competition… Before he was "Brad Vance," Brad published as Orland Outland. Here in a substantially revised version is one of his best comic novels, available again at last!

Book excerpt: The Witch's Union has discovered that Leigh Epstein has been dabbling in the dark arts, and now they want to become creative editors for Leigh’s paranormal romance, “Four-Bitten Fangtasy”, a book about a shape-shifting-werewolf-vampire hybrid named Vlad. They definitely have something up their sleeves and they've assigned our young apprentice witch to a mentor named Gertie, who isn't quite up to snuff. Can she fulfill the contract and get FBF done before the deadline? What’s in it for the Union anyway? To make matters worse, Leigh’s friends and family are still reeling from their last disastrous episode in Accidental Leigh. Will she make her Sister Sarah's lackluster love life even worse, by attempting to fulfill her erotic fantasy from her favorite BDSM/Navy SEAL/Amnesia novel? And yes, it's titled “Bound to Forget”. Love is in the air, but so is a catastrophe, now that Leigh is also getting some very strong feelings for Hunter, the hunky roofer turned Chicago Police Academy cadet. Find out almost everything, and even learn about a Paranormal Pet Shop, what really sank the Titanic, magic brownies, how the Great Chicago Fire really started, and more.

He shares step by step advice on setting up the rig; sail handling skills (hoisting, setting and reefing) heavy and light air sailing; manouevring a long-keel boat; losing way, scandalizing and steering with sails, topsails, watersails, single-luff spinnakers and fisherman staysails; and much, much more. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a really small town, but it had its own homegrown radio broadcaster. That was Larry, carrying his wooden pole with an empty tin can nailed on it (his "microphone"), a wooden chair (his "stage"), his guitar on his back, to the middle of town to "perform" daily for the locals. People would gather around to applaud and request songs, but all of Larry's songs were alike, yelling into that tin can. As far as the kids, for their entertainment, they had to create their own. Like driving their car on the train tracks, flying like the wind—until they met an oncoming train. And if the local sheriff got in their way, they just overpowered him and locked him up in his own jail overnight. After moving up north to train show horses, they discovered those northern cowboys had their own unique way of enduring that brutally cold weather: they would just get drunk and then fight with each other. They were gang fights, but all of them were friends. Great sport. Unless you were a native there, this seemed a bit odd to outsiders. So they moved down south, hoping for a friendlier and more acceptable way of living and got there in time to meet early integration head-on. Then they had to learn a new modified Geechee/Gullah language in order to communicate with their hired help. What they found was that as a rule, those Southerners overall were the most gracious, friendliest, lovable, and unique people of all. As far as the weather, though it was usually more reasonable, in one day alone, they could have monsoon-like rains, followed immediately by a metal-melting heat wave, and topped off with a heavy fog that swooped down over you like a massive wet blanket that made those winters up north seem mild.

Book excerpt: Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this multi-million-copy New York Times bestseller is the definitive manual for anyone interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control – from the author of The Laws of Human Nature. In the book that People magazine proclaimed “beguiling” and “fascinating,” Robert Greene and Joost Elffers have distilled three thousand years of the history of power into 48 essential laws by drawing from the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, and Carl Von Clausewitz and also from the lives of figures ranging from Henry Kissinger to P.T. Barnum. Some laws teach the need for prudence (“Law 1: Never Outshine the Master”), others teach the value of confidence (“Law 28: Enter Action with Boldness”), and many recommend absolute self-preservation (“Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally”). Every law, though, has one thing in common: an interest in total domination. In a bold and arresting two-color package, The 48 Laws of Power is ideal whether your aim is conquest, self-defense, or simply to understand the rules of the game.
