Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was vaguely aware of all the meth heads and dealers in the room watching me fall apart. "Give her a shot," I heard Chulengo say to someone. I didn't know whom he was talking to or what he was talking about, and before I even tried to figure it out, a strange man kneeled on the ground next to me. He grabbed my arm and told me to try to relax. I lay there lifeless, watching him and not knowing my life was getting ready to take a turn for the worst. He tightened a belt around my upper arm and closed my fist. I felt his fingers sliding up and down my arm. He pierced my skin with a sharp needle, and I saw my blood squirt back into the tube, mixing with whatever was in there. Slowly, he pushed the contents into my arm. My body became hot and the blood rushed to my head. I coughed so hard and felt my eyes widen and my heart beat faster. I had never felt a rush quite like this one. I had never been this high before. Every ounce of sadness and pain left my body and every tear I had left dried up. My whole world as I knew it had just changed in an instant.

Along with beloved destinations like Peru and South Africa, you'll also find tales from far-flung corners and seldom visited destinations, including Tuvalu, North Korea, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic. Nabongo's stories are love letters to diversity, beauty, and culture—and most of all, to the people she meets along the way. Throughout, she offers bucket-list experiences for other travel-lovers looking to follow in her footsteps. Book excerpt: This enthusiastic account of one woman's hike of more than 2,000 miles from Georgia to Maine on the legendary Appalachian Trail established her as a new voice among A.T. authors soon after its initial publication in 1982. Today, it's a classic.Artist/writer Cindy Ross split her trek across two years in the late 1970s, before the A.T. became popular for long-distance hiking. That, in no way, diminished the adventure of hardships and joys, loneliness and new friendships, physical and spiritual self-discovery, and radical change that mirrored the ridgecrests and valleys she crossed. Her sketches and vivid descriptions bring to life not only the personalities encountered along the way but also the true spirit of the Appalachian Trail community-a far-flung yet tightly knit family of all ages and backgrounds who share a love for a simple footpath where all are, simply, hikers.

Book excerpt: Through her own gripping story of escape from human trafficking, Rebecca Bender reveals the inner workings of the underground world of modern-day slavery and helps us learn how we can be a catalyst for change where we live. Born and raised in a small Oregon town, all-American girl Rebecca Bender was a varsity athlete and honor roll student with a promising future. Then a predator pretending to be her boyfriend lured her into a web of lies that sent her down a path she never imagined possible. For nearly six years, Rebecca was sold across the underground world of sex trafficking in Las Vegas. She was branded, beaten, told when to sleep and what to wear, and traded between traffickers. Forced into a dark sisterhood, Rebecca formed bonds with her trafficker and three other women, creating a false sense of family. During that time, God began revealing himself to her. And in the midst of her exploitation, she found the hope she needed to survive. After a federal raid, Rebecca escaped. Her life was forever changed as she felt the embrace of her heavenly Father guiding her to healing and wholeness. Rebecca soon began to use her own experiences to change the lives of others as she went back into the darkest places she had known--assisting FBI, VICE, and law enforcement across the country in some of their most difficult cases. Through Rebecca's incredible story of redemption, we remember that our past does not have to determine our destiny.

Book excerpt: My body starts heaving. Exhaustion encases everything I do, even washing the kids' cereal bowls. It feels as though layers of thick gauze have wrapped themselves around the faces of my three children. A hardened grayness taking over the spaces between everything. Sealing the tissue between my ribs. Filling in the distance between the kitchen window and the soccer ball in the backyard. One doctor thinks I am still caught in the fist of the mononucleosis I contracted in college; another tells me that giving birth to three children is enough to swell anyone's glands and break open these rivers of mucous. Infection after infection keeps me from my kids' tennis matches and class trips to Canyonlands in Utah. The fatigue gathers in my chest, leaving my arms heavy and my fingers numb. Daily headaches send me back to bed after breakfast. The words "chronic illness" move into my house, wandering the rooms, trying to steal parts of my body. My thin, bare feet slide down the hall to wake up the children for school. I have no idea what is happening.

Time passed, but the image of the lost watch continued to haunt her, a symbol of an overcommitted life. Two decades later, propelled by a series of curious coincidences, she leaves behind her busy professional life, her cell phone, and her family to escape the tyranny of time and walk five hundred miles across northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela. Steps Out of Time brings the mysterious and wonderful world of the Camino to life with its tales of serendipitous encounters, new friends made (and one tragically lost), stunning natural beauty, and unforgettable food. By the end of her journey, an exhausted and exhilarated Katharine Soper is keenly aware that she has completed much more than a month-long walk.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up as the intellectually spirited daughter of a Mexican Indian immigrant family during the 1970s, Castillo defied convention as a writer and a feminist. A generation later, her mother's crooning mariachi lyrics resonate once again. Castillo—now an established Chicana novelist, playwright, and scholar—witnesses her own son's spiraling adulthood and eventual incarceration. Standing in the stifling courtroom, Castillo describes a scene that could be any mother's worst nightmare. But in a country of glaring and stacked statistics, it is a nightmare especially reserved for mothers like her: the inner-city mothers, the single mothers, the mothers of brown sons. Black Dove: Mamá, Mi'jo, and Me looks at what it means to be a single, brown, feminist parent in a world of mass incarceration, racial profiling, and police brutality. Through startling humor and love, Castillo weaves intergenerational stories traveling from Mexico City to Chicago. And in doing so, she narrates some of America's most heated political debates and urgent social injustices through the oft-neglected lens of motherhood and family.

Book excerpt: Some twenty years ago, anthropologist Carlos Castaneda electrified millions of readers by describing his initiation--under the Yaqui Indian brujo Don Juan--into an alternate reality. Now Taisha Abelar, who was taught by the female members of Don Juan's group, recounts her own "crossing" in this arresting book. While traveling in Mexico, Abelar became involved with a group of sorcerers and began a rigorous physical and mental training process designed to enable her to breach the limits of ordinary perception. The Sorcerers Crossing details that process, giving us a highly practical sense of the responsibilities and perils that face a woman sorcerer. Abelar's enthralling story is invaluable as a virtual "sorcerers manual", as anthropology, and as a provocative work of women's spirituality.

Book excerpt: DENIED BASIC RIGHTS As a child in Saudi Arabia, Nabila knew no other life than that in which she lived, a society where women had no rights. Females could not attend school, pursue careers unless sanctioned by the government, drive cars, or choose their husbands. From birth to marriage, women in Nabila's culture remained under the control of males: a father, a brother, or a husband. ENCHANTED BY FREEDOM As a young bride, Nabila moved with her new husband to the United States, where he pursued a college degree, and where Nabila's world was opened to endless possibilities. Though the move was temporary, Nabila was enchanted and she knew she would return. Disenchanted: One Woman's Journey for Independence from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is Nabila's story of trying to find happiness and fulfillment in her homeland, but ultimately, having to sacrifice family for freedom.
