The young and the Old, the intellectual and the ignorant, he who has been rich, or is, or will be, all fraternize surprisingly. A little company Of souls whose lives are tangent at one point, who eat, drink, and are merry together and whose paths lie in as many directions as the Wind's. The Pullman palace cars are not all the name sug gests. Perhaps the pioneer, who crossed in '58, when Denver was seven days by stage from Quincy, Illinois, would not be so captious a critic, but the majority of end-of - the-century travelers are apt to agree with the man who said he hated to pay such a high price for insomnia. At night the sleeper accumulates such a load Of dust and Cinders that an early morning riser, if a man, is apt to be mistaken for the porter. He, however, has a fair chance of rectifying the mistake, but when the new Woman porter arrives, the women passengers may have to resort to badges for distinction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Newest Way Round the World America and the English speaking people Of foreign lands, we do so with a just appreciation of its great value as a record of one Of the most unusual journeys ever undertaken by any one, as well as a volume Of accurate information concerning parts Of the earth little frequented by tourists. To the author belongs the distinction Of being the first woman to have traveled over the Trans Siberian Railway alone, and the first woman to Visit the more remote parts of South America unattended by even a guide. Miss Miller always travels alone, and many times she has been for months by herself in countries where she could not speak the language; yet she never met with an accident nor missed a train. Book excerpt: The Anarchist Cookbook will shock, it will disturb, it will provoke. It places in historical perspective an era when "Turn on, Burn down, Blow up" are revolutionary slogans of the day. Says the author" "This book... is not written for the members of fringe political groups, such as the Weatherman, or The Minutemen. Those radical groups don't need this book. They already know everything that's in here. If the real people of America, the silent majority, are going to survive, they must educate themselves. That is the purpose of this book." In what the author considers a survival guide, there is explicit information on the uses and effects of drugs, ranging from pot to heroin to peanuts. There i detailed advice concerning electronics, sabotage, and surveillance, with data on everything from bugs to scramblers. There is a comprehensive chapter on natural, non-lethal, and lethal weapons, running the gamut from cattle prods to sub-machine guns to bows and arrows.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Round the World, Vol. 1: A Series of Letters; Europe and America The letters of Bishop Kingsley, included in these volumes, were originally contributed to the official papers of the Church, and we commence with those which he wrote for the Western Christian Advocate from Europe in the year 1867. From Europe we trace his route round the world westwardly; first to Colorado, thence to Oregon and California by the great Pacific Railroad, and by steamer across the ocean to China and India. He had almost reached Europe again, in his circumnavigation of the globe, when he was overtaken by death. The progress of his last journey we have noted in our biographical sketch. These letters abound in minute and careful observations, both of places and of people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from All the Way Round, the Story of a Fourteen Months Trip, Around the World The lure of the Orient was upon us. India and the Far East were our objective points. But we knew that the Europe of today is not the Europe of yesterday, and as my husband's war work had not permitted him to see much of it while there, and as I had remained at home, we decided not to let the opportunity go by without visiting some of the famous places. During his long years of service as Mayor of Chicago Mr. Harrison's one relaxation was found in his fondness for art. Almost all of his spare moments when in Chi cago are spent at 'the Art Institute, and he had a long ing to visit again the famous galleries of Europe. This decided us. So one day we gathered our little clan children and grandchildren about us, had a royal feast and gaily bade them an revoir! We sailed from New York on a French liner - a slow voyage of ten days which we greatly enjoyed landing in Havre toward the end of May. We had had a beautiful sea voyage, felt in fine feather and made our first stop at Rouen, en route to Paris. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journey Around the World No one, however intelligent, could begin to tell the story of the countries and people referred to in this volume. This book sets forth the impressions made upon the author by the glimpses obtained in a journey around the world, and it must be remembered that im pressions can honestly differ among truthful, observing, studious travelers. This diary was written at the request of a loved one who was unable to accompany me, and with whom I thus hoped, in a small degree, to share my daily experiences, but with no thought of publication. Its publication is due far more to the encouraging suggestions of friends, than from any confident promptings of my own. The author claims no qualifications whatsoever as a writer, but endeavored at all times to keep his mind free from prejudices, and alert to everything about him, and espe cially endeavored to see the good in all things, but frank in his statements of facts as observed and noted herein. It was not, however, until we were bound for the Orient and had reached strange lands, inhabited by strange people, with strange customs, that I was aroused to any serious effort in the writing of a daily narrative in which I endeavored to reflect the conditions surrounding the writer, for examme: India, depressing; China, smiles; Korea, tragic; Japan, attractive but imperialistic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Working My Way Around the World After spending some sixteen years in schools and colleges, I decided, one spring, to take a year off and make a trip around the world. I had no money for such a journey; but that did n't matter for I meant to work my way from place to place. I spoke F rench and German, and had some knowledge of Spanish and Italian. I believed that if I had to work among the people of foreign countries I would learn more of them and of their languages than in any other way. So I was not sorry that I had to start my journey with only my camera and one hundred and four dollars for films. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Round the World: Including a Residence in Victoria and a Journey by Rail Across North America I have had pleasure in editing this little book, not only because it is the work of my youngest son, but also because it contains the result of a good deal of experience of life under novel aspects, as seen by young, fresh, and observant eyes. How the book came to be written is as follows: The boy, whose two years' narrative forms the subject of these pages, was at the age of sixteen seized with inflammation of the lungs, from which he was recovering so slowly and unsatisfactorily, that I was advised by London physicians to take him from the business he was then learning in Yorkshire, and send him on a long sea voyage. Australia was recommended, because of the considerable time occupied in making the voyage by sailing ship, and also because of the comparatively genial and uniform temperature while at sea. He was accordingly sent out to Melbourne by one of Money Wigram's ships in the winter of 1868-9, with directions either to return by the same ship or, if the opportunity presented itself, to remain for a time in the colony. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Job to Job, Around the World The pages that follow are an account of a three year trip I made around the world, starting from San Francisco with only a five-dollar gold piece and earning my way. My wanderings took me to Hawaii, Japan, Korea, China, the Philippines, Cey lon, India, Egypt, Palestine, Turkey, Europe, Eng land, Norway, Spitzbergen, Sweden, and finally across the Atlantic to America. I think the book covers a new field in travel narrative in that it shows that it is possible to work one's way around the world and do so with a considerable degree of comfort. In most instances I held good positions, met the rep resentative people of each country and travelled in moderate style. I, of course, had numerous hard ships and adventures, which I relate.
