Book excerpt: Clearly demonstrating how her poetry is drawn from personal experience, this bold and innovative collection of new poems exemplifies characteristic themes of her work: personal responsibility, social justice, and living in the natural world. Additionally, two prose journals--one written in the month following September 11, while her husband worked at the United Nations in New York City, and the second written while they were in Geneva in early 2002 when the U.S. response to September 11 was taking shape--further explore these themes and her response to these events.

Book Synopsis Shapely Bodies by : Christine A. Jones
Download or read book Shapely Bodies written by Christine A. Jones and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-16 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shapely Bodies: The Image of Porcelain in Eighteenth-Century France constructs the first cultural history of porcelain making in France. It takes its title from two types of “bodies” treated in this study: the craft of porcelain making shaped clods of earth into a clay body to produce high-end commodities and the French elite shaped human bodies into social subjects with the help of makeup, stylish patterns, and accessories. These practices crossed paths in the work of artisans, whose luxury objects reflected and also influenced the curves of fashion in the eighteenth century. French artisans began trials to reproduce fine Chinese porcelain in the 1660s. The challenge proved impossible until they found an essential ingredient, kaolin, in French soil in the 1760s. Shapely Bodies differs from other studies of French porcelain in that it does not begin in the 1760s at the Sèvres manufactory when it became technically possible to produce fine porcelain in France, but instead ends there. Without the secret of Chinese porcelain, artisans in France turned to radical forms of experimentation. Over the first half of the eighteenth century, they invented artificial alternatives to Chinese porcelain, decorated them with French style, and, with equal determination, shaped an identity for their new trade that distanced it from traditional guild-crafts and aligned it with scientific invention. The back story of porcelain making before kaolin provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of artisanal innovation and cultural mythmaking. To write artificial porcelain into a history of “real” porcelain dominated by China, Japan, and Meissen in Saxony, French porcelainiers learned to describe their new commodity in language that tapped into national pride and the mythic power of French savoir faire. Artificial porcelain cut such a fashionable image that by the mid-eighteenth century, Louis XV appropriated it for the glory of the crown. When the monarchy ended, revolutionaries reclaimed French porcelain, the fruit of a century of artisanal labor, for the Republic. Tracking how the porcelain arts were depicted in documents and visual arts during one hundred years of experimentation, Shapely Bodies reveals the politics behind the making of French porcelain’s image. Using Python to visualize data helps stakeholders in less technical roles to understand the problem and seek solutions. The goal of this book is to help data scientists and GIS professionals learn and implement geospatial data science workflows using Python. Throughout this book, you’ll uncover numerous geospatial Python libraries with which you can develop end-to-end spatial data science workflows. You’ll learn how to read, process, and manipulate spatial data effectively. With data in hand, you’ll move on to crafting spatial data visualizations to better understand and tell the story of your data through static and dynamic mapping applications. As you progress through the book, you’ll find yourself developing geospatial AI and ML models focused on clustering, regression, and optimization. The use cases can be leveraged as building blocks for more advanced work in a variety of industries. By the end of the book, you’ll be able to tackle random data, find meaningful correlations, and make geospatial data models. What you will learn Understand the fundamentals needed to work with geospatial data Transition from tabular to geo-enabled data in your workflows Develop an introductory portfolio of spatial data science work using Python Gain hands-on skills with case studies relevant to different industries Discover best practices focusing on geospatial data to bring a positive change in your environment Explore solving use cases, such as traveling salesperson and vehicle routing problems Who this book is for This book is for you if you are a data scientist seeking to incorporate geospatial thinking into your workflows or a GIS professional seeking to incorporate data science methods into yours. Book Synopsis Rules for the Road by : Hanna William Hanna
Download or read book Rules for the Road written by Hanna William Hanna and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most travelers leave home Monday morning for a work week in the Chicago office saying "Love yah, see you Friday." The hero in Rules for the Road is a quantum leap from that lucky character. Last Friday afternoon he kissed his wife passionately and said, "Love you, hope to see you before next month arrives." You don't fly home on Friday afternoons when you find yourself halfway around the world. We join our hero on a train in China headed for Nanjing where he and his team are about to begin another round of negotiations with a Chinese company to enter into a joint venture. The meetings, however, quickly take a back seat to the culture of the people, their mannerisms, food, drink and the winsome ways of their women with a personal agenda. When the trip gets extended by an extra week and a half, his life and the temptations of the flesh become almost intolerable. Our loving husband finds himself swept up in dangerous events that he has neither contemplated nor imagined. In other words, the magnetism of his personality has a precarious impact on the women he meets: this Svengali makes swooning ladies act out naughty thoughts.

Book Synopsis The House of the Stag by : Kage Baker
Download or read book The House of the Stag written by Kage Baker and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2009-11-10 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the Riders came to their remote valley the Yendri led a tranquil pastoral life. When the Riders conquered and enslaved them, only a few escaped to the forests. Rebellion wasn't the Yendri way; they hid, or passively resisted, taking consolation in the prophecies of their spiritual leader. Only one possessed the necessary rage to fight back: Gard the foundling, half-demon, who began a one-man guerrilla war against the Riders. His struggle ended in the loss of the family he loved, and condemnation from his own people. Exiled, he was taken as a slave by powerful mages ruling an underground kingdom. Bitterer and wiser, he found more subtle ways to earn his freedom. This is the story of his rise to power, his vengeance, his unlikely redemption and his maturation into a loving father--as well as a lord and commander of demon armies. Kage Baker, author of the popular and witty fantasy, The Anvil of the World, returns to that magical world for another story of love, adventure, and a fair bit of ironic humor.
