Book excerpt: One-on-One Tutoring by Humans and Computers articulates the CIRCSIM-Tutor project, an attempt to develop a computer tutor that generates a natural language dialogue with a student. Editors Martha Evens and Joel Michael present the educational context within which the project was launched, as well as research into tutoring, the process of implementation of CIRCSIM-Tutor, and the results of using CIRCSIM-Tutor in the classroom. The domain of this project is cardiovascular physiology, specifically targeting first-year medical students, though the idea is applicable to the development of intelligent tutoring systems across populations, disciplines, and domains. This 5 year-long project was motivated by the belief that students need assistance in building appropriate mental models of complex physiological phenomena, as well as practice in expressing these ideas in their own words to fully develop those models, and experience in problem-solving to use those models effectively. The book outlines directions for future research, and includes distinct features such as: *detailed studies of human one-on-one tutoring; *learning outcomes resulting from use of the tutor; *natural language input parsed and translated into logical form; and *natural language output generated using the LFG paradigm. Book excerpt: In the well-known two sigma problem introduced in 1984, Bloom found that students tutored by a one-on-one expert tutor achieved a learning outcome two standard deviations higher than those taught using traditional classroom methods. Since one-on-one tutoring is too costly to scale up to the majority of students, technology-based solutions have been suggested as promising solutions to simulate one-on-one human tutoring experiences. However, current automated computer-based tutors still primarily consist of learning activities with limited interactivity such as multiple-choice questions, review-and-flip flash cards, and listen-and-repeat practices. These tutors tend to be unengaging and thus their effectiveness typically relies on students' desire to learn. With recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), we now have the potential to create conversation-based tutoring systems with the ability to provide personalized feedback to make learning more engaging and effective and eventually help bridge the gap between one-on-one human tutoring and computer-based tutoring. In this dissertation, I present the design, development, and testing of four AI-based conversational tutoring systems that personalize learning for adults and children. For adult learning, I present two systems: QuizBot for helping college students learn factual knowledge and EnglishBot for tutoring second language learners in speaking English. For child learning, I present two systems embedding conversational tutors into narrative stories to supplement elementary school students' math learning: the first implemented using Wizard-of-Oz techniques and the second powered by online reinforcement learning algorithms. I conducted human evaluations with over 500 students using these tutoring systems to better understand how humans interact with AI in these educational systems. Our results show that, compared to current learning systems, conversation-based tutoring systems that leverage new natural language processing and reinforcement learning techniques to provide adaptive feedback can engage students more, motivate them to spend more time using tutoring systems, and improve student learning outcomes.

The book is divided in three parts, part I, Game-based Learning, reflects upon the two-way interaction between game and student, thus enabling the game to react to the student’s emotional state. Having the possibility to detect and steer the emotional state of the student could have a positive impact on using digital games in education. It is claimed that some commercial computer games increase cognitive skills and may enhance multitasking abilities and the participants’ general ability to learn. Part II, Motivation and Learning, analyses whether the absence or presence of social and personal cues in the communication between a tutor and his or her students influence students’ learning and their satisfaction with the tutor and the course. The research showed that not all types of personal information are equally important and possibly pictorial information is more important than audible information. Part III, Emotions and Emotional Agents, discusses the production of learning environments which enhance the learner’s self esteem, ensure that the learner’s best interests are respected through paying attention to the narrative structures of the learner’s experience, and the ways in which communication can be enhanced through empathy with the learner.
