Shout. Scream. Sing. Whether you're an actor or a singer, your voice is called upon to do many things. But how do you keep your voice healthy while satisfying these demands? Theatre voice specialist Joan Melton is uniquely qualified to show how. She maintains that the training of singers and actors should be similar. Her groundbreaking book outlines a course of study that integrates basic elements of singing technique into the whole range of theatre voice training. The physicality of Melton's approach addresses all the issues of concern for professional voice users in any field. Melton's detailed work on phrasing demonstrates the technical similarities between text that is sung and text that is spoken. She supports her suggestions for relating and integrating voice and movement, too-for those in musical theatre who must sing, speak, and dance-with exercises that fully engage the performer physically and vocally. Kenneth Tom contributes a chapter on vocal anatomy, offering clear and accessible material on how the voice works along with practical advice on its care.

Book excerpt: From the author of The Five People You Meet in Heaven and Tuesdays with Morrie, a new novel that millions of fans have been waiting for. "Every family is a ghost story . . ." Mitch Albom mesmerized readers around the world with his number one New York Times bestsellers, The Five People You Meet in Heaven and Tuesdays with Morrie. Now he returns with a beautiful, haunting novel about the family we love and the chances we miss. For One More Day is the story of a mother and a son, and a relationship that covers a lifetime and beyond. It explores the question: What would you do if you could spend one more day with a lost loved one? As a child, Charley "Chick" Benetto was told by his father, "You can be a mama's boy or a daddy's boy, but you can't be both." So he chooses his father, only to see the man disappear when Charley is on the verge of adolescence. Decades later, Charley is a broken man. His life has been crumbled by alcohol and regret. He loses his job. He leaves his family. He hits bottom after discovering his only daughter has shut him out of her wedding. And he decides to take his own life. He makes a midnight ride to his small hometown, with plans to do himself in. But upon failing even to do that, he staggers back to his old house, only to make an astonishing discovery. His mother--who died eight years earlier--is still living there, and welcomes him home as if nothing ever happened. What follows is the one "ordinary" day so many of us yearn for, a chance to make good with a lost parent, to explain the family secrets, and to seek forgiveness. Somewhere between this life and the next, Charley learns the astonishing things he never knew about his mother and her sacrifices. And he tries, with her tender guidance, to put the crumbled pieces of his life back together. Through Albom's inspiring characters and masterful storytelling, readers will newly appreciate those whom they love--and may have thought they'd lost--in their own lives. For One More Day is a book for anyone in a family, and will be cherished by Albom's millions of fans worldwide.

Book excerpt: Too often performers are conditioned to think they have a “speaking voice” and a “singing voice.” Yet in fact, the voice we use to speak, laugh, cry, yawn, scream, and call out is the same voice we use to sing! Joan Melton brings together the contrasting worlds of singing and acting training in an approach that is physically energizing, vocally freeing, and infinitely practical. Kenneth Tom contributes a chapter on vocal anatomy and physiology, offering clear and accessible material on how the voice works, along with practical advice on its care. This groundbreaking book outlines a course of study that effectively integrates techniques from theatre and music across a range of performance trainings. The physicality of Melton’s approach addresses the concerns of professional voice users in any field, and her detailed work on phrasing and the use of language applies equally to speaking and singing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driftwood is a poetic look at the world, covering the span of a lifetime from birth in war torn London to retirement on a small island in Moreton Bay, on Queensland’s east coast and the influences of nature upon its author. Robert has enjoyed an interesting broadcasting career in Australia and New Zealand but all through it, he\has been followed by poetry that both stimulates and exhilarates. “Driftwood-Another Voice” is about whispers we all hear in our minds, that urge us to do and see things in a different light. It is about being able to listen to your ‘positive voice’ and value it because, like driftwood, it can be washed up on a beach one day and gone on the next high tide. Like driftwood, Robert’s poems take us to places around the world and we end up on some unusual beaches. We dance with sparkling streams and even meet some of his unusual spectres but always there are the trees and birds, beaches and mountains. Driftwood is a unique book for people who have a passion for the natural world. Driftwood-The Other Voice, reveals something within all of us, if only we can learn to listen.

Book excerpt: A new, philosophically grounded theory of the voice—the voice as the lever of thought, as one of the paramount embodiments of the psychoanalytic object. Plutarch tells the story of a man who plucked a nightingale and finding but little to eat exclaimed: "You are just a voice and nothing more." Plucking the feathers of meaning that cover the voice, dismantling the body from which the voice seems to emanate, resisting the Sirens' song of fascination with the voice, concentrating on "the voice and nothing more": this is the difficult task that philosopher Mladen Dolar relentlessly pursues in this seminal work. The voice did not figure as a major philosophical topic until the 1960s, when Derrida and Lacan separately proposed it as a central theoretical concern. In A Voice and Nothing More Dolar goes beyond Derrida's idea of "phonocentrism" and revives and develops Lacan's claim that the voice is one of the paramount embodiments of the psychoanalytic object (objet a). Dolar proposes that, apart from the two commonly understood uses of the voice as a vehicle of meaning and as a source of aesthetic admiration, there is a third level of understanding: the voice as an object that can be seen as the lever of thought. He investigates the object voice on a number of different levels—the linguistics of the voice, the metaphysics of the voice, the ethics of the voice (with the voice of conscience), the paradoxical relation between the voice and the body, the politics of the voice—and he scrutinizes the uses of the voice in Freud and Kafka. With this foundational work, Dolar gives us a philosophically grounded theory of the voice as a Lacanian object-cause.

Book excerpt: Reclaim Your Headspace and Find Your One True Voice As a hospital chaplain, J.S. Park encountered hundreds of patients at the edge of life and death, listening as they urgently shared their stories, confessions, and final words. J.S. began to identify patterns in his patients’ lives—patterns he also saw in his own life. He began to see that the events and traumas we experience throughout life become deafening voices that remain within us, even when the events are far in the past. He was surprised to find that in hearing the voices of his patients, he began to identify his own voices and all the ways they could both harm and heal. In The Voices We Carry, J.S. draws from his experiences as a hospital chaplain to present the Voices Model. This model explores the four internal voices of self-doubt, pride, people-pleasing, and judgment, and the four external voices of trauma, guilt, grief, and family dynamics. He also draws from his Asian-American upbringing to examine the challenges of identity and feeling “other.” J.S. outlines how to wrestle with our voices, and even befriend them, how to find our authentic voice in a world of mixed messages, and how to empower those who are voiceless. Filled with evidence-based research, spiritual and psychological insights, and stories of patient encounters, The Voices We Carry is an inspiring memoir of unexpected growth, humor, and what matters most. For those wading through a world of clamor and noise, this is a guide to find your clear, steady voice.
