Book excerpt: One More Beer and I Gotta Go will offend you in some way. That is a promise. From the moment you first meet James Laslow, you will immediately fall in love with him and hate him. Yet, you will love him and hate him for one simple reason. You see him inside of you. These are his memoirs from his senior year in high school all the way until his ten-year class reunion. Never will you find a boring moment inside of One More Beer and I Gotta Go from the high school running back that wants to be a magician to the bachelor party from hell where the groom's father does a keg stand to eating cold Chef Boyardee at a tavern in the middle of nowhere. These are laugh aloud anecdotes, but in between those insane stories of his youth come nuggets of truth showing what is real from his best friend to his love life. Simply think Dazed and Confused meets American Pie meets Breakfast at Tiffany's meets Scooby-Doo meets Romeo and Juliet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book promotes the idea that all media types are multimodal and that comparing media types, through an intermedial lens, necessarily involves analysing these multimodal traits. The collection includes a series of interconnected articles that illustrate and clarify how the concepts developed in Elleström’s influential article The Modalities of Media: A Model for Understanding Intermedial Relations (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010) can be used for methodical investigation and interpretation of media traits and media interrelations. The authors work with a wide range of old and new media types that are traditionally investigated through limited, media-specific concepts. The publication is a significant contribution to interdisciplinary research, advancing the frontiers of conceptual as well as practical understanding of media interrelations. This is the first of two volumes. It contains Elleström’s revised article and six other contributions focusing especially on media integration: how media products and media types are combined and merged in various ways.

Book excerpt: “The only book you need to understand the world’s most popular beverage. I swear on a stack of these, it’s a thumping good read.”––John Holl, editor of All About Beer Magazine and author of The American Craft Beer Cookbook Imagine sitting in your favorite pub with a friend who happens to be a world-class expert on beer. That’s this book. It covers the history: how we got from gruel-beer to black IPA in 10,000 years. The alchemy: malts, grains, and the miracle of hops. The variety: dozens of styles and hundreds of recommended brews (including suggestions based on your taste preferences), divided into four sections––Ales, Wheat Beers, Lagers, and Tart and Wild Ales––and all described in mouthwatering detail. The curiosity: how to read a Belgian label; the talk of two Budweisers; porter, the first superstyle; and what, exactly, a lager is. The pleasure. Because you don’t merely taste beer, you experience it. Winner of a 2016 IACP Award “Covers a lot of ground, from beer styles and brewing methods to drinking culture past and present. There’s something for beer novices and beer geeks alike.”––Ken Grossman, founder, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. “Erudite, encyclopedic, and enormously entertaining aren’t words you normally associate with beer, but The Beer Bible is no ordinary beer book. As scinitillating, diverse, and refreshing as man’s oldest alcoholic beverage itself.”––Steve Raichlen, author of Project Smoke and How to Grill

Book excerpt: When a black law professor agrees to defend a racist murderer, the stakes are higher than a mere guilty verdict... When Mitchell Dove is murdered and dismembered, his vicious killing tears open far-too-recent wounds and sends a shock wave throughout Black communities across the United States struggling to find their place. Professor of law Phil Dennison agrees to defend the white man on trial for killing Dove, who was the first African American CEO of the world's largest oil company--a promising and rising star in the corporate world. Trying to save the murderer John Robert Holloway, Professor Dennison finds himself the focus of national attention and stuck between the law and his community. Even Dennison's fianci, federal prosecutor Alicia Bloom, thinks he's crazy until he lets her in on the monumental opportunity he sees in this case: setting a legal precedent so fundamental that it could truly and finally give real teeth to the country's hate crime laws. As they work to acquit this racist monster, their sights are set on the real monsters, the people who created John Bob. Where does intolerance come from? Who creates hate? How do human beings become racist murderers? Human Wrongs is a fast-paced, richly detailed, intriguing novel that shines a brilliant and unsparing light on the causes of racism, hatred and intolerance. Yet another gruesome murder, in a long and demoralizing line of tragedies and brutalities suffered by the American Black community, is the backdrop for a story that seeks to show how deeply runs the vein that perpetuates Human Wrongs.

Book excerpt: Traversing is about our ways of seeing, experiencing, and moving through the world and how they shape the kinds of people we become. Drawing from concepts developed by two phenomenological philosophers, Martin Heidegger and Jan Patočka, and putting them in conversation with ethnographic analysis of the lives of contemporary Czechs, Susanna Trnka examines how embodiment is crucial for understanding our being-in-the-world. In particular, Traversing scrutinizes three kinds of movements we make as embodied actors in the world: how we move through time and space, be it by walking along city streets, gliding across the dance floor, or clicking our way through digital landscapes; how we move toward and away from one another, as erotic partners, family members, or fearful, ethnic "others"; and how we move toward ourselves and the earth we live on. Above all, Traversing focuses on tracing the ways in which the body and motion are fundamental to our lived experience of the world, so we can develop a better understanding of the empirical details of Czech society and what they can reveal to us about the human condition.

The realization comes while she’s on her hands and knees cleaning up someone’s vomit. Her job sucks. A life-altering event moves her from the Midwest to the heart of the desert, where she must unravel the mysteries and oddities the desert holds. Her father, who left when she was young, had died, leaving her his home and pest control business in the Arizona desert. Bug business, whaaat? Ardy knows nothing about pests. What was her father thinking, or maybe like always ... he wasn’t. Coincidentally, or maybe not, she develops an illness that forces her to make the move to a drier climate. Ardy hesitantly looks further into what her father left her and why he left it to her. Into her new life enters Adam, a native of the Pima tribe and her neighbor. Relationships are never easy, whether it’s women or men or families. And just when you think you've got it figured out, along comes a curve, or in her case, several. Ardy realizes even though she’s only been with women before, she has feelings for Adam, and ventures into unchartered territory. He smells like the wind. As secrets unfold, Ardy learns more about the legends and the curses of the desert, her deceased father, and the things that drove him and kept him there. Why did he really die? Is the curse true? Ironically, it is the bugs of the desert that save her life.

He dives into this world hoping to forget the tiring real world. But through an unexpected series of events, he ends up almost “possessing” Kuroi. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frankly, I dont know whether to call this manuscript fact or fiction. I know that what I have been able to check is fact, but this is mainly hearsay, as told to me by the real Harley Grant. I met Harley Grant (of course I have changed his name) in Public Market just as I have had Mike Bender meet him, in the beer isle. The second time I ran into him, I invited him over to the Green Flash our houseboat tied in Losers Lagoon for a drink. Dottie invited him for supper and after supper we sat around drinking Sam Adams. Dottie finally went to bed and we were still batting our gums. It was then that Harley told me this story that he swears is true. It was two in the morning when he finished. When he finished I shook my head in disbelief. I told him that I was going to check on it. He told me that I would find nothing. Big oil had destroyed any trace that it had ever happened. This I took with a grain of salt. I told this tale to a friend, a Lt. Commander in the Coast Guard. He said, Let me check on it, maybe I can find something in one of the old logs. I had almost forgotten about it when he got back to me. Jack, there may be something to that story you told me. I found this entry in the ships log of one of the decommissioned 84 foot cutters. Be on the lookout for a 70 or 80 foot yacht with xs and zs in its name which was last seen in Key West! This rekindled my interest and I went back to Harley and asked him to show me Hidden Cay. He took me down to the gate, but he said that Mike and Lois were on an extended stay in Goa. Yes, there were peafowl on the property! But that is the only verification that I could find, except I did locate Neal Forest and in a drunken stupor he admitted that he did row a couple of Chinks out to a big yacht. In this book I of course invented much of the dialogue and changed all the names. I tried to keep it as realistic as it was when Harley first told it by having Mike Bender tell the story. Further research proved fruitless. I was stonewalled everywhere I went! I even had one threat not to write a book about it. To hell with it, I am going to write it and call it FICTION!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller CRISIS OF CHARACTER comes an explosive new exposé of the Secret Service. The United States Secret Service is tasked with protecting our Presidents, their families, and the complex in which they live and work. Given this important mission, world stability rests upon the shoulders of its agents. In his new book, former Secret Service officer Gary Byrne takes readers behind the scenes to understand the agency's history and today's security failings that he believes put Americans at risk The American public knows the stories of Secret Service heroism, but they don't know about the hidden legacy of problems that have plagued the agency ever since its creation. Gary Byrne says that decades of catastrophic public failures, near misses, and bureaucratic and cultural rot threaten to erode this critical organization from the inside out. Today, as it works to protect President Trump, the Secret Service stands at a crossroads, and the time needed to choose the right course is running out. Agents and officers are leaving the Secret Service in droves, or they're being overworked to the point where they lose focus on the job. Management makes decisions based on politics, not the welfare of their employees. Byrne believes that this means danger for the men and women of the Secret Service, danger for the President they protect, and danger for the nation. In this book, he shares what he has witnessed and learned about the Secret Service with the hope that the problems of this most important agency can be fixed before it's too late.

Book excerpt: What are the limitations of friendship? If you wanted to challenge a friend to try something new in life, how far would you go to see it happen? Inspired: A Novel is a story about finding the answer to that question. It is the story about Andrew, an otherwise ordinary person, who is "intelligent without ever excelling academically, fearless until it becomes time to make a decision, poetic without ever writing his own words, and a world-traveler who doesn't even own a passport." In spite of this life, he believes that the world has something more to offer him, and he gets through the day with the words of those who inspire him and his dreams of future grandeur. It's not until the actions of his friend, however, that Andrew's life finds the change that he always believed he was destined for. But, as Inspired: A Novel shows, the life we sometimes dream of is not as beautiful and poetic as what we may believe it to be.
