Book excerpt: Abstract: Recent studies have suggested that Americans work more hours today than ever before. Some scholars argue that long work hours have negative impacts on families. The increase in married women's labor force participation has been associated with an increase in the likelihood of marital dissolution. Do wives' higher hours of employment destabilize marriages? I draw on attachment, role strain, and ideological consistency arguments to develop specific hypotheses regarding this association, the conditions under which it may vary, and the processes through which it operates. Using wave 1 (1987-1988) and wave 2 (1992-1994) of the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH), I test whether there is a direct relationship between wives' hours of employment and the likelihood of marital dissolution, and whether the effect is moderated by the presence and age of children, husbands' hours of employment, and marital duration. I also test whether the relationship between wives' hours of employment and the likelihood of marital dissolution is contingent upon couples' gender ideology, and whether couples' marital happiness and marital conflict mediate this relationship. Limiting my sample to married primary respondents at wave 1 whose spouses were present and completed a questionnaire, and whose marital status at wave 2 could be ascertained, I construct couple-level measures of gender ideology, marital happiness, and marital conflict that capture consistency or conflict between spouses' views. I find a significant positive association between wives' hours of employment and the likelihood of marital dissolution. This effect does not significantly differ by the presence and age of children, husbands' hours of employment, or marital duration. Contrary to my expectations, this association is also not moderated by couples' gender ideology. However, this study strongly supports the hypothesis that wives' hours of employment leads to an increase in the likelihood of marital dissolution through a reduction in marital happiness and increase in marital conflict.

Book excerpt: The present research studies marital dissolution using data from both spouses from the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH) and uses the method of multiple imputation to handle missing data. Role theory and another four approaches (social exchange theory, stake theory, gender perspective and heterogeneity perspective) are used to make a methodological argument why using data from both spouses is necessary to study marital stability. Five data sets are imputed and there are 3,777 observations in each imputed data set. Main research findings are as followed. First, the model fits of the data from both spouses on marital dissolution are significantly better than the model fits of the data from one spouse only; therefore, gathering perceptual data from both spouses is necessary to understand marital dissolution. Second, overall, the effects of most spousal discrepancies do not support the heterogeneity perspective. Third, the model fits of the wife only model are significantly better than the model fits of the husband only model across different periods of marital duration, and the predictability of wives' variables is more stable than the husbands' variables. Therefore, if only individual-level data are available to use, researchers are encouraged to use wives' data rather than husbands' data. Fourth, the predictability of factors varies with marital duration and gender in the models with data from both spouses.

Book excerpt: Status inconsistency theory has traditionally been used to examine outcomes for individuals who experience discrepancy among multiple statuses, such as high educational attainment but low occupational prestige. The current study applies this theory to married couples, investigating how the degree of discrepancy between husbands and wives on dimensions such as education, income, occupational prestige, and work hours is associated with their self-reported mental health and perceptions of marital quality and global happiness. I also explore whether gender ideology moderates the relationships between status inconsistencies and these outcomes. The data come from the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH). I use piecewise regression in order to isolate the potentially different effects of positive and negative inconsistencies (i.e. how being higher or lower on a given status characteristic, relative to one's spouse, might exert differential effects). The findings reveal that, in general, different directions of status inconsistency (advantaged or disadvantaged) benefit women compared to men. Only status inconsistency in work hours and education are relevant for men, who benefit from being status-advantaged relative to their wives. For women, all types of status inconsistency are relevant, and being status-disadvantaged relative to their husbands is beneficial.

This study utilized systems theory to examine and help explain the dissolution process of graduate student marriages. Specifically, it examined the impact of marital structure on perceptions of marital quality. Drawing primarily from Scheinkman's (1988) qualitative study, spouses in asymmetrical marriages (i.e., marriages where only one spouse is in graduate school), as opposed to symmetrical marriages (i.e., marriages where both spouses are in graduate school), were hypothesized to report (a) less satisfaction with the division of household labor, (b) lower perceptions of equity, and (c) less satisfaction with emotional intimacy. These, in turn, were hypothesized to lower perceptions of marital quality. Participants from a list of master's and doctoral-level students at a west coast university in the United States were randomly selected and contacted by phone. Only married students and their partners were solicited for participation. The final sample consisted of 121 married individuals (60 husband-wife pairs, 1 female) who responded to a mailed questionnaire. Of these 121 respondents, 85 were involved in asymmetrical arrangements and 36 in symmetrical arrangements. Contrary to expectations, asymmetry did not indirectly (and negatively) affect marital quality through satisfaction with the division of household labor and perception of equity. There was, however, some evidence that asymmetry negatively influenced marital quality by lowering spouses' satisfaction with emotional intimacy. This latter finding was considered to be meaningfully significant because satisfaction with emotional intimacy was by far the strongest predictor of marital quality. The findings are discussed primarily in terms of the education level of each spouse. Reconceptualizing asymmetry as an educational or power differential, or even more generally as a difference in emotional experiences, is recommended. In other words, it is not the number of spouses in school per se that matters; it is the understanding and emotional connectedness between them.
