In constantly searching to complete themselves, they become the perfect fodder for the charismatic Rawul of Dhoka and his sinister Sixth World Movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1990s, more than 1.6 million Jews from the former Soviet Union emigrated to Israel, the United States, Canada, Germany, and other Western countries. Larissa Remennick relates the saga of their encounter with the economic marketplaces, lifestyles, and everyday cultures of their new homelands, drawing on comparative sociological research among Russian-Jewish immigrants. Although citizens of Jewish origin ostensibly left the former Soviet Union to flee persecution and join their co-religionists, Israeli, North American, and German Jews were universally disappointed by the new arrivals’ tenuous Jewish identity. In turn, Russian Jews, whose identity had been shaped by seventy years of secular education and assimilation into the Soviet mainstream, hoped to be accepted as ambitious and hard working individuals seeking better lives. These divergent expectations shaped lines of conflict between Russian-speaking Jews and the Jewish communities of the receiving countries. Since her own immigration to Israel from Moscow in 1991, Remennick has been both a participant and an observer of this saga. This is the first attempt to compare resettlement and integration experiences of a single ethnic community (former Soviet Jews) in various global destinations. It also analyzes their emerging transnational lifestyles. Written from an interdisciplinary perspective, this book opens new perspectives for a diverse readership, including sociologists, anthropologists, political scientists, historians, Slavic scholars, and Jewish studies specialists.

Book excerpt: This breathtaking first novel explores Leon Trotsky and his wife's years of Mexican exile in the home of Frida Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera. Mingled with the voices of Stalin's desolate young wife and that of Trotsky himself are the tales of the lesser known who have also created history--the Mexican artist who foretells Trotsky's death; a Bolshevik engineer surviving the chill of the Stalinist regime; the bodyguard who is unable to prevent the assassination. Together, the stories reveal the panorama of Russian history, revolution, and upheaval in the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Finding Truth in Life and Love: One Man’s Journey.” Wow, what a title, but I hear you say the great thinkers of our time can explain Love, Life and the Universe, so why have you bothered writing a book? Stephen Hawking says, “the universe can and will create itself from nothing”. Richard Dawkins explanation of life is, “We are survival machines, robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes”. And as for love, science has proven that love is just a bunch of chemical reactions. So, what can I offer on the subject at hand? All these intelligent people indeed have more to say on the subject with all their knowledge gained through degrees and doctorates. What can I add to the subject with my most prised qualification being my 100-yards swimming certificate from primary school? Well, indeed, I do not have a lot of knowledge, but I do consider that life has taught me to be wise. You may ask what the difference is between knowledge and wisdom. Well, knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is not putting tomatoes in your fruit salad. Reading some of the explanations by the world’s greatest minds, like Stephen Hawking, when he says the universe will create itself from “nothing”, I get the uneasy feeling that someone is messing with the fruit salad. This uneasiness and my stubborn, enquiring nature have set me on a half century discovery for truth. The earth is travelling at 67,000 miles per hour through space. Is someone driving? What about all the religions of the world? Are some or all of them true? What is the truth in any case? Does the truth matter? Why don’t we abandon the truth, and all invent our reality to suit our lives?
