The results prove that the late Joseph Kitagawa was prescient when he cautioned that the world is "Easternizing" as much as it is "Westernizing," and that "modernization" is a far from adequate key to name what is happening in world religious history in our age.

Book excerpt: Chapter 1 My mother gave me the same name as a famous black man of the nineteen hundreds, Booker T. Washington. This story tells how the name has affected my life; as a child, as a teen, and as an adult. At the age of six, my teacher took me aside and told me that Booker T. was a famous black man who founded Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. I didn't think much about it at the time but as I grew older more and more people began to comment like my teacher had done. I asked my mother why she named me after this famous guy. I told her that I would rather have a name that did not draw so much attention, like my two brothers who were named Billy and Ellis. She told me that she thought I would like the name. We never talked about it again. I was named after my uncle Booker T. Washington, who was named after the famous Booker T. Washington who founded Tuskegee Institute in 1881 and is located in Tuskegee Alabama. My uncle was invited to, and attended a banquet with Booker T. Washington, in Frankfort, Kentucky when he was nine years old. According to my family, my family is not related to him. Let us not forget that he was one of the most famous black Americans of his time. My mom told me that she named me Booker, and that will always be your name. I never talked to her about my name again.

Book excerpt: "What do you fear? Can a child who is loved as much as I love you perish in the arms of a Father who is omnipotent?" - Our Lord's words to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque If you met God today, what would He say to you? You bring to God your suffering: physical ailments, emotional pain, fears and doubts, and more. You ask Him to deliver you from these difficulties. What might He say to you in reply? Words of Hope is a collection of powerful dialogues and sayings given by Jesus to four gifted saints from the Middle Ages and Renaissance: Teresa of Ávila, Catherine of Genoa, Gertrude the Great and Margaret Mary Alacoque. These souls possessed the gift of "locution," the ability to hear the actual voice of God. Each of these wise and holy women has left us accounts of their conversations with God, especially during times of struggle. In Words of Hope, you'll discover what Our Lord told them - words that you, too, can take to heart. • "While one is alive, progress doesn't come from trying to enjoy Me more, but by trying to do My will.” • "The kingdom of Heaven cannot be obtained without suffering." • "The more you pray for anyone, the happier they will become, because no prayer of faith can remain unfruitful, although you do not know in what manner the fruit will come." • "I love holy water, and I have so great an affection for the cross that I cannot refrain from uniting Myself closely with those who bear it like Me and for the love of Me." In this book, author Craig Turner collects into categories the locutions received by these saints, words from God that are meant not only for these four souls, but for all mankind. Words of Hope is a powerful work that shows God's amazing love and compassion for each and every person.

We find in the pages of this book the basic questions of life placed on the firm foundation of the philosophy of Vedanta. We learn how abstract spiritual ideas took concrete form in Sri Ramakrishna’s religious practices and how by clinging to the ideal of Sri Ramakrishna we can solve all the problems of our life. And we find all this presented in a manner which is intelligible, rational, scientific, scripturally sound, and at the same time full of sweet humor. This is a revised single volume edition of the original in bengali translated by Swamis Swahananda and Sarvadevananda.
