Sappho's all-female academy was for Western lyric poetry what Plato's all-male academy was for Western philosophy-its point of origin in the form that we know and understand it. Plato himself hailed Sappho as the tenth muse. Yet all but a tiny handful of her works are lost-probably deliberately destroyed. In 1907, Bliss Carman imaginatively reconstructed one hundred lyrics from the remaining fragments in the manner of the Romantic Era. This charming book has been long out of print, having been antithetical to the anti-Romantic spirit of the mid and late 20th century. This edition includes an introduction by Miss Marianne Martindale and a new poem by Sappho discovered in 2005 (bringing the total of her surviving complete poems to four) and translated in the romantic style by Sushuri Madonna.

The text is an anthology of one hundred waka poems, each written by a different poet from the seventh to the middle of the thirteenth century, which is when Fujiwara no Teika, a renowned poet and scholar, assembled the collection. The book features poems by high-ranking court officials and members of the imperial family, and despite their similarity in composition, they involve a wide range of emotions, imagery, and themes, from frost settling on a bridge of magpie wings to the continuity of the imperial line. Peter McMillan's poetic translation captures the original emotions of these poems. They are accompanied by calligraphic versions in Japanese and line drawings depicting the individual poets, while explanatory notes place the poems in context. An appendix includes both the poems' Japanese and romanized versions, making this edition of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu both a superior introduction to Japan and its special lyric tradition and an excellent textbook for the study of Japanese language and literature.

Ots wrote an introductory article on the subject. "Sappho's Poetry" Sappho was an ancient Greek poet from the island of Lesbos who was included in the Greek canons of the nine poets of poetry. Most of his poetry, known and highly prized in antiquity, has been lost. But his reputation remains unwavering, supported by a fraction of the poem. Carman's method, as Roberts saw it. "Obviously this is imagining the lost song as it was discovered, and then translating it, because infinite translation is always persistent, even with the fluidity and freedom of work. It was a terrible job, as Robert admits, "as if sculptors today had to stand up respectfully and practice their craft and familiarity with the spirit, technique and atmosphere of history. Of him to revive A statue of Polyclitus or Praxiteles, which Ma Karman has been a success. "Written more or less concurrently with the love poem in Songs of the Sea Children, Sappho's new creation retains the shape of love from a woman's point of view. However, the sentiment that identifies Sappho is a Carman. Pure in sensitive and graceful pain. "
