These are Adventist kids and grown-ups that say "Wait. What? That makes no sense. Who is this Jesus they are presenting? He demands that I know the law, the Sabbath, the sanctuary in heaven, the scary investigative judgment, the mark of the beast, the three angels' messages, about being stranded without an advocate, the fact that Jesus was executed in my place, and the fact that I should revere and obey the Adventist pope""or else." Don't fret. Inside this book, you'll find all the answers, and you will also be surprised by how easy the Gospel is to understand and how much fun it is to be free in Christ. Free yourself from the shackles of organized religion.

Book excerpt: “Transmutes Lavender Scare investigators’ ruthless assaults on suspected homosexuals in 1950s Gainesville into heart-racing fiction.” —New York Journal of Books In the late 1950s, Gainesville, Florida, seems to be a sleepy university town. Its residents live, by outward appearances, ordinary lives. And yet the town is far from ordinary. The most private acts of professors, students, townspeople rich and poor, and politicians are under the close scrutiny of a shadowy group of men—the Committee—who use the powers of government and the police to investigate, threaten, and control this increasingly fearful community. The Committee pits friends against friends and threatens careers and lives in a struggle for the soul of a town, a university, and an ideal. Based on actual historical events and set against the backdrop of political, cultural, and class turmoil, this is a story of love—both licit and hidden—war, friendship, betrayal, compromise, and finally the necessity to stand firm against the encroachments upon freedom by men who believe they are doing God’s and the government’s righteous work. “The Committee takes place on campus, but deserves to be included with those ‘academic’ novels like Mary McCarthy’s The Groves of Academe, Randall Jarrell’s Pictures from an Institution, Kingsley Amis’s Lucky Jim, and Jane Smiley’s Moo, all books that burst out of their scholarly settings to light up the characters and societies they live in . . . This book will hold you to the very end, and after.” —Peter Meinke, Creative Loafing Tampa Bay “At once an historical, political, and academic novel, and it is one that succeeds on all these fronts.” —Reviewing the Evidence

Twisted and harshly comedic (just like real life), this is the story of what happens when ignorance and arrogance meet and give birth. You've seen these guys on the street before and wondered where they came from. Well, this book should answer all your questions. And if you happen to recognize a bit of yourself in there-be afraid. Be very afraid.

Book excerpt: There's only one boy Celia would NOT want to be stuck sitting next to on this interminably long train ride. So guess who just walked on board… Clearly the universe has a sick sense of humor. That's the only explanation Celia can come up with when she finds herself alone on a train with her crush since second grade. Maybe some girls would call this fate. Destiny, even. But Celia knows better. This is cruel and unusual punishment, because Heath is also the one boy who turns her into a stammering, incoherent fool. And that's before he kisses her senseless. Heath's not exactly jazzed about this turn of events either. He's supposed to be on this trip with his girlfriend. But now his girlfriend is his ex and he's trapped on a train ride from hell with the one girl who apparently hates his guts. Cool. Looks like everyone is in for a good time. Except, one derailed train, a shared motel room, two unexpected detours, and a few steamy kisses later, and maybe, just maybe—they're both about to change their tune.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helen C. Krumpf is retiring after forty-two years at R.J. Mrssk Co., Inc.. This would appear to be an event of towering insignificance, since an announcement of her departure and an observance thereof arouse no interest whatsoever among her coworkers. But events totally unrelated to her are conspiring to make her retirement dinner a truly memorable occasion. For their own very different reasons, almost a thousand R.J. Mrssk Co. employees (with the notable exception of the guest of honor) will find their way to the retirement dinner. The legendary head of the corporation, Rufe Clayton, will be there. Rufe has recently been stricken with Alzheimer’s disease (having just turned eighty-one, he’s entitled). He has come to anoint as his successor Winston Thornton (Zack) Russ III, currently vice-president, Eastern area. A snafu in the system Zack Russ uses to spy on corporate headquarters causes him to believe that Old Man Clayton is coming east to fire him. He prepares an appropriate welcome. Boom-boom DeFrancesco, assistant manager accounting department, will be there. So will Marla, Sandi, Miranda, and a new hire, a dark haired lovely young lady whose name Boom-Boom has not yet learned. Trying to allocate himself equitably among these and possibly a few other ladies has caused him to forget an assignment given him by his boss, Ralph Murphy. He was supposed to arrange to get the guest of honor to her retirement dinner. Two mutually hostile groups of employees will be there- the smokers and non-smokers of R. J. Mrssk Co., Inc.. And if you don’t think they’re hostile, just keep your eye on Frank Murratta. Brand new rookies (Amanda and Adam) and seasoned veterans (Tina and Sam), extra-marital players/ office affairs division will seize the opportunity presented by this company sanctioned night out to do their thing. The serenely beautiful fruitcake, Myrna Gulinski will be there with her adoring housemate/ husband to be, Ted Glump. And apprentice human being , Gwendolyn Glump, whom fate will unexpectedly tap for a starring role in the nights festivities. And not one, but two, major television networks will be on hand to cover the proceedings. This is because of a hot rumor that the retiring Helen C. Krumpf is the first (of fourteen) wives of television superstar, Jackie Mervin. And, the rumor goes on to say, they are getting back together. Television personalities Paula Cantwell and June Peterie will be on hand to cover this breaking story for their respective networks. Alas, Jackie Mervin will not be in attendance. There is no truth to the rumor regarding him and Helen C. Krumpf. In fact, even as the guests begin to arrive at the retirement dinner, Jackie is in a west side chapel marrying his latest (and truest) love, Hokie the Hack. But the evening will be anything but a wasted trip for the television personalities, their camera crews, and their nationwide audiences. There will be more than enough that is eminently newsworthy to justify their presence. And, in what will turn out to be of particular interest to June Peterie, Sam Chess, engineering department, R.J. Mrssk Co., Inc. will be there. Sam has long been obsessed with June Peterie, and he will take the opportunity presented to him tonight by fate to lay to rest certain concerns he has had regarding her. It is Friday evening, September 8th, and close to a thousand employees of the R. J. Mrssk Co., Inc. head to the Commodore Hotel. You might want to come along.

Book excerpt: 'A barnstorming epic of the '80s British Left' Hari Kunzru, author of Red Pill Paul, ex-tube driver and drinking partner of legendary Union leader Bob Crowe turns up at Essex University in the early 1980s haunted by the death of his colleague on the tracks. Thrown into the radical mix of Student Union life and the academic intoxication of post-modern theory taught by the likes of Ernesto Laclau, Jacques Derrida and a very young Slavoj Zizek, Paul befriends the novel's unnamed narrator. What follows is a riotous attempt to put the 20th Century to bed, as seen through the eyes of the foot soldiers of British history. From Miners strikes to IRA collection buckets, ANC demonstrations and some very dodgy handling of Soviet money, Our Struggle climaxes with a devastating denouement in modern day Kurdistan. Holloway's epic tale asks the big questions, does what we think, what we say and what we do ever match up? Or are we destined to fall short of the ideals we think we cherish?

Book excerpt: This open access book adopts a cultural sociology of materiality to explore the hallmark of the female athlete: the ponytail. Studying a wealth of news articles about ponytails in sports and society, Broch uncovers this hairstyle’s polyvocality and argues that it is a total social phenomenon. By separating his approach from the cultural studies tradition, Broch highlights how hair is imbued with codes, narratives, and myth that allow its wearers to understand, maneuver, and criticize social gender relations in deeply personal ways. Using multiple theories about hair, bodies, myths, and icons, he creates a multidimensional method to show how icons are imitated and used. As women navigate their practical lives, health issues, and gendered expectations, the ponytail materializes their dynamic maneuvering of cultural and social environments. Sporting a ponytail—itself an embodiment of movement—is filled with a performativity of social movements: a cultural kinetics that is never apolitical.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coca-Cola. Harley-Davidson. Nike. Budweiser. Valued by customers more for what they symbolize than for what they do, products like these are more than brands--they are cultural icons. How do managers create brands that resonate so powerfully with consumers? Based on extensive historical analyses of some of America's most successful iconic brands, including ESPN, Mountain Dew, Volkswagen, Budweiser, and Harley-Davidson, this book presents the first systematic model to explain how brands become icons. Douglas B. Holt shows how iconic brands create "identity myths" that, through powerful symbolism, soothe collective anxieties resulting from acute social change. Holt warns that icons can't be built through conventional branding strategies, which focus on benefits, brand personalities, and emotional relationships. Instead, he calls for a deeper cultural perspective on traditional marketing themes like targeting, positioning, brand equity, and brand loyalty--and outlines a distinctive set of "cultural branding" principles that will radically alter how companies approach everything from marketing strategy to market research to hiring and training managers. Until now, Holt shows, even the most successful iconic brands have emerged more by intuition and serendipity than by design. With How Brands Become Icons, managers can leverage the principles behind some of the most successful brands of the last half-century to build their own iconic brands. Douglas B. Holt is associate professor of Marketing at Harvard Business School.
