Book Synopsis One Country Club Drive by : Marty Peck
Download or read book One Country Club Drive written by Marty Peck and published by Bookbaby. This book was released on 2019-08-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Marty Peck tells what it was like to literally live on a golf course with behind-the-scenes escapades right out of a caddy shack movie. The stories from three generations of keepers of the greens revolve around their home - blending coming of age and fatherhood themes with golf history and plenty of humorous and lifelong lessons. With hundreds of images, follow the historic course's evolution since its horse-drawn construction one-hundred years ago from the Post cereal family summer estate. Share the lives of its humble caretakers, with tales of slot-machine con artists, ravaging fires and floods, and national scandals as the Peck family watched the likes of Walter Hagan, Ben Hogan and Arnold Palmer play in their back yard. Peck will make you appreciate golf course history and have a laugh or two while you're at it.
Book Synopsis The Women on Country Club Drive by : Liz Hamlin
Download or read book The Women on Country Club Drive written by Liz Hamlin and published by Trafford. This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight women who were complete strangers become neighbors when they move to Country Club Drive, an "exclusive" new suburb developed by J.P. Scott, the wealthiest man in a small Ohio Valley town. WWII is over; business is booming; families are reunited; America is optimistically looking forward to greeting the halfway mark of the 20th Century. To the world outside, each woman living in the guarded cul-de-sac on Country Club Drive has everything, a luxurious new home, her own expensive car, fashionable clothes, and the privilege of being granted J.P. Scott's permission to inhabit the affluent private world that he created in honor of his new wife, Belle, a former call girl who gladly traded late-night telephone rings from many men for a wedding ring from one man. Outsiders view Country Club Drive through rose-colored glasses, yet beyond the manicured yards and shuttered windows, each woman senses that something is missing in her life, and in the dark hours at night, hungers for more. Belle wants the town to forget that before J.P. divorced his first wife and bought Belle's body for his use only, many men had paid to use it for their pleasure. Ruth, a corporate wife who dutifully follows her husband's frequent transfers on his route to success knows that a cure for loneliness can always be found at the bottom of a highball glass. Dora, a young newlywed, is given everything she wants from her husband except sex. Virginia, whose life fell apart when she buried her first husband, builds a fence around her emotions to safeguard against being hurt again. Martha's marriage is perfect; so is her affair with her husband's best friend... until the unexpected happens. Shelly, a beautiful model is also her photographer husband's doll baby; he is determined that motherhood will never rearrange his plaything's perfect body. Grossly overweight Bertha is hurt when her husband is repulsed by her gluttony, but thrilled that he can't stay out of her bed. Ellen, an ideal wife and a loving mother, a paragon of virtue in the community, hides a cruel secret that only one person in the neighborhood knows. As the 20th century nears its halfway mark, each woman on Country Club Drive faces a challenge. Some face tragedy. At least one faces death.

Download or read book One Small Town Boy written by Gerald A. Meehl and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-10-23 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first-person account describes the vivid and compelling World War II experiences of Jack Goetz, who flew twenty-five missions with the 544th Squadron, 384th Bomb Group based at Grafton Underwood, England, in the early stages of the air war over Europe from mid-1943 to early 1944. During his combat tour, he flew on B-17 bombers over German-occupied Europe as a gunner. These were hazardous missions that resulted in high casualty rates among B-17 flight crews. Jack had his share of close calls, including a crash landing in a crippled bomber and a ditching in the English Channel, which resulted in the death of a close friend and crewmate. After completing his combat tour, he volunteered to be a member of the flight crew that took a group of combat correspondents to the Pacific to cover the end of the war in that theater. His B-17 was the second American aircraft to land in Japan just as the war ended, and he was among the first Americans to visit the atomic bomb-blasted city of Hiroshima.

Download or read book Pre-Gay L.A. written by C. Todd White and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the origins and history of the modern American movement for homosexual rights, which originated in Los Angeles in the late 1940s and continues today. Part ethnography and part social history, it is a detailed account of the history of the movement as manifested through the emergence of four related organizations: Mattachine, ONE Incorporated, the Homosexual Information Center (HIC), and the Institute for the Study of Human Resources (ISHR), which began doing business as ONE Incorporated when the two organizations merged in 1995. Pre-Gay L.A. is a chronicle of how one clandestine special interest association emerged as a powerful political force that spawned several other organizations over a period of more than sixty years. Relying on extended interviews with participants as well as a full review of the archives of the Homosexual Information Center, C. Todd White unearths the institutional histories of the gay and lesbian rights movement and the myriad personalities involved, including Mattachine founder Harry Hay; ONE Magazine editors Dale Jennings, Donald Slater, and Irma Wolf; ONE Incorporated founder Dorr Legg; and many others. Fighting to decriminalize homosexuality and to obtain equal rights, the viable organizations that these individuals helped to establish significantly impacted legal policies not only in Los Angeles but across the United States, affecting the lives of most of us living in America today.

Book excerpt: For anyone planning a dream golfing vacation to Ireland, Trolleys and Squibs is the most comprehensive guidebook in the market. In addition to its practical travel tips, this book offers insightful essays -- including several by leading figures in Irish golf -- that explain the history and particular character of golfing in Ireland. Vacation planners will especially love the book's extensive, geographically balanced coverage of individual golf courses, presented by way of two whimsically named lists. The Trolleys List contains thorough summaries of 153 courses, including small maps and directions for getting there, scorecard data, descriptions of each course's layout and club facilities, and recommendations on local restaurants and hotels. The Squibs List offers basic information -- addresses, phone numbers, brief descriptions -- about 138 additional golf courses. With Trolleys and Squibs, you can plan a detailed itinerary and make your reservations, even before landing on Irish shores (though armchair travelers as well will gain immense enjoyment from the colorful portraits of the courses and countryside).
