Download or read book Newsgames written by Ian Bogost and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2012-09-21 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How videogames offer a new way to do journalism. Journalism has embraced digital media in its struggle to survive. But most online journalism just translates existing practices to the Web: stories are written and edited as they are for print; video and audio features are produced as they would be for television and radio. The authors of Newsgames propose a new way of doing good journalism: videogames. Videogames are native to computers rather than a digitized form of prior media. Games simulate how things work by constructing interactive models; journalism as game involves more than just revisiting old forms of news production. Wired magazine's game Cutthroat Capitalism, for example, explains the economics of Somali piracy by putting the player in command of a pirate ship, offering choices for hostage negotiation strategies. Videogames do not offer a panacea for the ills of contemporary news organizations. But if the industry embraces them as a viable method of doing journalism—not just an occasional treat for online readers—newsgames can make a valuable contribution.
Book Synopsis Don't Let Cryptic Crossword Clues Fool You by : John P.Stewart
Download or read book Don't Let Cryptic Crossword Clues Fool You written by John P.Stewart and published by Booktango. This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cryptic crosswords are fun but most people are scared of them. The general opinion is "Oh, they are too hard." Nothing could be further from the truth; once you learn the tricks they are essentially easier to do than the simple daily crosswords you struggle with every day in your daily newspaper. You don't have to be a university graduate. A second grader can handle cryptic-solving with the proper guidance. You can too, just by following the lessons in this book. Cryptic crosswords are addictive. Once you become interested in them you are hooked. Alcohol, drugs and tobacco are also addictive but these metaphorically fry your brain and destroy your health. A cryptic crossword addiction is good for you. It stimulates your thoughts, sharpens your memory and keeps your mind active. It opens up mental doors to greater understanding of the written text and keeps you mentally alert well into the declining years of old age. Scientists agree that an old mind can learn new tricks and perform intriguing tasks as well as a young mind. Studies have shown that people who remain mentally active reading, writing and doing crossword puzzles tend to stay sharper longer and are less likely to get dementia than people who are less mentally active. A cryptic crossword is actually a simple puzzle set in code or in a form that seems complicated to the straightforward reader. Basically it is a skillful form of wordplay. The coded portion of the clue normally confirms the answer and makes it easier to solve for the connoisseur [you, when you complete all the lessons in this book]. Seduced by visions of relaxing poolside in sunny Los Angeles, she heads to Hollywood to create a puzzle for a TV movie based on a crime she and her husband, Rosco Polycrates, recently cracked. The hook is that the show is interactive—viewers get to solve the crime on air with Belle. The trouble starts when Belle discovers that someone has replaced her crossword with a brand-new set of clues. Then a series of suspicious accidents culminates in murder. In a case in which everyone’s under suspicion—and all are harboring secrets—the backstage backstabbing is heating up to a fever pitch. Now Rosco’s jetting out to La-La Land to help Belle sort out the clues while the truth is still in development and a killer could make this show a done deal. This ebook includes six crossword puzzles that contain clues to solving the mystery and can be downloaded as PDFs, with answers in the back of the book. Anatomy of a Crossword is the 6th book in the Crossword Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.
Download or read book Weirdness! written by Taner Edis and published by Pitchstone Publishing (US&CA). This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world where science faces challenges from creationists and climate change deniers, and where social media is awash with wild conspiracy theories, it is no longer enough for scientists, pundits, and activists to simply ask the public to trust science. Rather, all must better understand how science works, and why science is essential. By exploring many of the odd beliefs embraced by large sections of the public that are rejected by the scientific mainstream, Weirdness! makes a case for science that goes beyond popular slogans. It takes seriously claims that paranormal phenomena, such as psychic abilities and mythical creatures, might be real, but demonstrates how such phenomena would extend beyond the laws of nature. It rejects a sharp boundary between science and religion, while explaining how to negotiate their real differences. Denials of science cause no end of trouble, but so too does placing blind trust in science. As Weirdness! reminds readers, science should not be seen as a mechanism that takes in data and spits out truth—indeed, what we get wrong about how the world works is often as interesting as what we get right.

Download or read book Primary Games Book 1 written by Carol Kidd and published by Speedy Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike many other puzzle books, this series offers your early learner total independence to play them without any assistance from you. It is a self-checking puzzle book that gives a child complete freedom to enjoy words he is learning and to check his answers all by himself easily. In Book 1 of Primary Games, your child will find a book in LARGE PRINT that uses lower-cased lettering. Unlike most other game books, this one uses the SAME LIST of spelling words in each set of puzzle games. This means, that after he has played all the puzzles, he will have a sense of mastery for the words he has been using. Here is what you will find in this resource: 1. Using visually attractive picture images beside each spelling word, your child or student will have an illustration of the word he is learning to spell 2. These SAME spelling words are then used in the WORD SEARCH PUZZLE. Each puzzle only incorporates horizontal and vertical letter placement. Backward and diagonal lettering are not used to prevent confusion 3. The ANSWERS to each word search puzzle can be found on the BACK of the puzzle page, making it easy for your child to receive immediate feedback and any necessary help with his efforts 4. Next, the CROSSWORD PUZZLE incorporates the SAME spelling words your child has been playing with; however, instead of clues, the words are listed, making it fun for him to find the numbers and fill in the blanks 5. In the final puzzle game of the set, your child will get to test himself with a Fill-in-the-Blanks game that uses the SAME words he has been learning in the other puzzle games 6. And because of the large print, your child will have plenty of room to practice writing his letters, eliminating the frustration of spaces that are too small Through the use of REPETITION and learning to see the SHAPES of words by using lower-case lettering, your child will experience success and confidence--all without any supervision or help from YOU! And be sure to check out Book 2 of Primary Games for continued fun--for you AND your child!
