Book excerpt: In order to benchmark and improve current 2D radiation magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models of Z-pinch plasmas, we have performed experiments which characterize the plasma -conditions at stagnation. In the experiments the SATURN pulsed power facility at Sandia National Laboratory was used to create an imploding -Ar-Ne plasma. An absolutely calibrated, high resolution space- and time- resolving Johann crystal spectrometer was used to infer the electron temperature Te from the slope of the hydrogenlike Ne free-bound continuum, and the ion density ni from the Stark broadening of the Ar heliunlike Rydberg series. 2D electron temperature profiles of the plasma are obtained from a set of imaging crystals also focused on the Ne free-bound continuum. We shot two types of gas nozzles in the experiment, annular and uniform fill which varies the amount of mass in the plasma. 2D local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and non-LTE MM models predict a radiating region denser and cooler than measured.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theoretical analysis of a high density Z-pinch (HDZP) begins with an examination of the steady state energy balance between ohmic heating and bremsstrahlung radiation losses for a plasma column in pressure equilibrium. The model is then expanded to include the time-varying internal energy and results in a quasi-equilibrium prescription for the load current through a constant radius plasma channel. This set of current waveforms is useful in the design of experimental systems. The behavior of a plasma for physically realizable conditions is first examined by allowing adiabatic changes in the column radius. A more complete model is then developed by incorporating inertial effects into the momentum equation, and the resultant global MHD computational model is compared with more sophisticated, and costly, one- and two-dimensional computer simulations. These comparisons demonstrate the advantages of the global MHD description over previously developed zero-dimensional models.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-resolved x-ray pinhole photographs and time-integrated radially-resolved x-ray crystal spectrometer measurements of azimuthally-symmetric aluminum-wire implosions suggest that the final pinch is composed of a hot dense plasma core surrounded by a cooler plasma halo. The slope of the free-bound x-ray continuum measured using filtered photoconducting diodes, provides a time-resolved, model-independent diagnostic of the core electron temperature. A simultaneous measurement of the time-resolved K-shell line spectra provides a diagnostic to indirectly measure the electron temperature of the plasma halo. Together, measurements from the two diagnostics lend support to a picture that also emerges from a 1-D Rad-Hydro model; namely, that of a plasma whose thermalization on axis produces steep radial gradients in temperature, where the temperatures are substantially in excess of a kilovolt in the core and below a kilovolt in the surrounding plasma halo.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calculations of the ionization balance of optically thick argon plasmas of electron temperature 25-65 eV are presented. A multistage, multilevel model of argon ions with accurate radiation transport of about 50 lines in the sodium, neon, and flourine-like stages forms the basis of the calculations. By comparison with similar optically thin calculations, the effects on ionization of radiative and collisional pumping of excited states of these stages is delineated. In particular, the broad temperature distribution of the neon-like stage is compressed by line photon pumping to a narrower regime of existence because of ionization from the excited states. The relevance to the 3p-3s lasing scheme in neon-like argon is briefly discussed. Keywords: Ionization equilibrium; Gamble-II generator; Argon plasma; Collisional pumping. (Author).

Book Synopsis Temperature Profiles in Argon Induction Plasmas: Theory and Experiment by : Hans U. Eckert
Download or read book Temperature Profiles in Argon Induction Plasmas: Theory and Experiment written by Hans U. Eckert and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comparison is made between recent temperature measurements of argon induction plasmas that include cases of annular geometry and calculations based on the one-dimensional Elengaas-Heller equation. Exact numerical solutions, as well as approximate closed-form solutions drived from a two-zone model are used. Good agreement is obtained for the central portion of the plasma column with the exact method used for all reported power inputs and with the approximate method used for medium power input. Near the walls, however, the experimental temperatures are considerably higher for all geometries and power inputs. It is argued that here electron diffusion causes an overpopulation of electron and thus an overestimation of gas temperatures when Saha equilibrium is assumed. (Author).
