Rather, the subject at hand was the perfection of radar, the beaming and re?ection of microwaves which had already saved Britain from the German onslaught. Here was a technology which won the war, rather than one that prematurely ended it, at a still incalculable cost. It was partly for that reason that Schwinger joined this e?ort, rather than what might have appeared to be the more natural project for his awesome talents, the development of nuclear weapons at Los Alamos. He had got a bit of a taste of that at the “Metallurgical Laboratory” in Chicago, and did not much like it. Perhaps more important for his decision to go to and stay at MIT during the war was its less regimented and isolated environment.

Se describen las corrientes eléctricas continuas, la ley de Ohm relativa a la resistencia eléctrica y la potencia que se disipa en un circuito. Una corriente eléctrica produce un campo magnético. La relación es descrita por la ley circuital de Ampère, y con ella se estudian las propiedades magnéticas de la materia. El concepto de flujo magnético adquiere relevancia lográndose plantear la idea de circuitos magnéticos y las propiedades que poseen en particular los materiales ferromagnéticos. Todo lo anterior es base fundamental para el cuezco de electromagnetismo: el fenómeno de la inducción planteado en la ley de Faraday-Lenz. Este estudio permite una breve visita a las nociones más básicas de la teoría de la relatividad de Einstein, al estudiar el movimiento junto a las ideas de campos eléctricos y magnéticos. Electromagnetismo culmina planteando las ecuaciones dinámicas que funden las nociones de campos eléctrico y magnéticos en un concepto único: el campo electromagnético. Se plantean las ecuaciones de Maxwell para este campo. En forma natural estas ecuaciones permiten comprender la existencia y propiedades de las ondas electromagnéticas: rayos gamma, rayos X, radiación ultravioleta, visible, infrarroja, microondas, frecuencias usadas en emisiones radiales AM, FM y televisión y la onda larga. Se estudian los fenómenos de reflexión y refracción de estas ondas en superficies de distinta naturaleza.

The adoption of time domain methods for this purpose is the book’s most important breakthrough, allowing the fundamentals of applied electromagnetics to be introduced with a clarity and simplicity not available through the conventional route. Another new aspect of this book is the integration of computational modelling methods with the standard theory of electromagnetic waves. The author presents a set of example programs written in the MATLAB language to support the ideas outlined in the text. The book is organized in a logical progression of ideas, starting with the general idea of wave motion and showing how the equations of electricity and magnetism lead to the existence of electromagnetic waves through the Maxwell’s equations. These ideas are then applied to simple accelerating charge models used in the engineering design of wire antennas. The concepts of resonance and antenna impedance are then treated from a time domain point of view. To reinforce the concepts of wave propagation, a chapter on computer modelling shows the rigorous procedures required to generate accurate numerical models of wave dynamics.
