Book excerpt: In this opposites-attract Regency romance by USA Today bestselling and HOLT Medallion winning author BREE WOLF, an untamed lady and a proper duke are put to the test when they fall in love against all odds. An untamed lady. A proper duke. And a love that goes against all the rules. England 1803: LADY HARRIET BEAUMONT, daughter to the Earl of Whickerton, is a free spirit, always has been. She does as she pleases, determined to ignore society's etiquette and demands, determined to remain unwed. Her heart tends to go out to those who have been mistreated, and over the course of a most eventful and somewhat scandalous life, Harriet-or "Harry"!-has nursed countless animals back to health. A rabbit by the name of Sir Lancelot. A talking parrot called King Arthur...or Biscuit as he insists. A toad dubbed Prince Charming. Most recently, however, a rather unusual creature crossed her path. He walks on two legs and speaks in complete sentences. His name? The Duke of Clements. Or as Harriet renamed him, Sweet Jack. BRADLEY JACKSON, the DUKE OF CLEMENTS, lives a life of order and predictability...at least until he stumbles across a most unusual woman out in the woods. How she comes to be there-unaccompanied, mind you!-he does not know nor care; all he knows is that he needs to rid himself of her as fast as possible. After all, with one glance, Bradley can tell that this woman spells trouble. Unfortunately, Lady Harriet is not so easily set aside, her insistence on seeking him out more than simply puzzling to Bradley. Instead of assisting his aunt in choosing his future duchess, Bradley suddenly finds his days occupied by a most troublesome hellion. No matter what he does, the lady simply will not stay away...and before long, Bradley is shocked to realize that he no longer wishes she would. Could she possibly be the one? The woman meant to be his duchess? As shocking as that thought is, the more disturbing one is that Lady Harriet has sworn never to marry. What is a duke to do when he finds his heart stolen by the one woman in all of England who will not have him?

Book excerpt: In this enemies-to-lovers Regency romance by USA Today bestselling and HOLT Medallion winning author BREE WOLF, a fierce lady and her far from ordinary husband find that an accidental marriage can have its benefits after all. A lady on a mission. A misunderstood rogue. And a most compromising moment. England 1803: LADY CHRISTINA BEAUMONT, daughter to the EARL OF WHICKERTON, is on a mission. A mission to protect her best friend from being forced into a marriage that would see her delicate heart broken and her sensibilities shocked. Deep in debt, Lord Hartmore agreed to marry his daughter to a scoundrel. A man who grew up far from London's high society. A man who does not know how to treat a lady. A man most vile and utterly unsuitable. A man who cannot be deemed a gentleman. With one glance, Christina can see that the only reason Mr. Sharpe intends to marry her friend is to gain entrance into London's high society...and she will raise hell before allowing that to happen. His emerald green eyes and teasing smile cannot fool her, and so, she concocts a plan to protect her friend. Unfortunately, Christina finds herself falling prey to another's plan before her own can fall into place. THORNE SHARPE is a self-made man. Growing up with nothing, he earned his first coins in boxing matches. However, knowing that if he ever wanted to make something of himself, he needed to rely on his wits instead of his fists. Saving what little he earned, he began to invest, always keeping his eyes and ears open, determined to get ahead in the world. A society match promises the necessary influence Thorne needs in order to make a difference, a difference for all those still struggling to survive each and every day. However, while the young lady he had his eye on appears to be kind and good-hearted - although somewhat fearful - Thorne finds his gaze linger upon her spirited friend instead, a siren with golden locks and eyes that shoot daggers at him at every occasion. So, when opportunity presents itself, Thorne does not hesitate. He never has. And he won't start now. He knows what he wants, and what he wants is...her.

Book excerpt: From the author of Happiness for Beginners comes the instant New York Times bestseller (May 2018), an unforgettable love story about finding joy even in the darkest of circumstances. Margaret Jacobsen is just about to step into the bright future she’s worked for so hard and so long: a new dream job, a fiancé she adores, and the promise of a picture-perfect life just around the corner. Then, suddenly, on what should have been one of the happiest days of her life, everything she worked for is taken away in a brief, tumultuous moment. In the hospital and forced to face the possibility that nothing will ever be the same again, Maggie must confront the unthinkable. First there is her fiancé, Chip, who wallows in self-pity while simultaneously expecting to be forgiven. Then, there's her sister Kit, who shows up after pulling a three-year vanishing act. Finally, there's Ian, her physical therapist, the one the nurses said was too tough for her. Ian, who won't let her give in to her pity, and who sees her like no one has seen her before. Sometimes the last thing you want is the one thing you need. Sometimes we all need someone to catch us when we fall. And sometimes love can find us in the least likely place we would ever expect. How to Walk Away is Katherine Center at her very best—a masterpiece of a novel that is both hopeful and hilarious; truthful and wise; tender and brave. Book excerpt: The Black Moth (1921) is a historical romance novel by Georgette Heyer. Initially devised as a series of stories for her younger brother Boris, who suffered from hemophilia, The Black Moth became Heyer’s debut novel following its discovery by her father, who recognized its merits and sought publication. Published in Britain and the United States, The Black Moth was a commercial success that launched the career of one of twentieth-century England’s most popular writers of fiction. Set during the Georgian era of the 1750s, the story follows Lord Jack Carstares, a disgraced nobleman who turns to a life of crime after taking the blame for his brother’s persistent dishonesty at cards. Branded a cheater and a thief, Jack briefly flees England before returning under the name of Sir Anthony Ferndale. Forced into the shadows, he becomes a highwayman notorious for robbing the carriages of the rich. Following his father’s death and his brother’s ascent to the head of the family estate, Jack is caught while robbing the carriage of a man who turns out to be Miles O’Hara, an old friend and Justice of the Peace. Arrested, Jack is forced to reveal his identity, and is promptly forgiven. Retaining his disguise and unready to rejoin the social life of England’s elite, Jack becomes embroiled in a scandal involving the abduction of Miss Diana Beauleigh, whom he rescues from the wicked Duke of Andover. Unable to remain anonymous for much longer, Jack is pulled by his innate goodness toward the friends and family he has long since left behind, allowing him one last chance at redemption. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Georgette Heyer’s The Black Moth is a classic work of English historical romance reimagined for modern readers.

The book begins with a 3-page list of the characters and brief sketches for each. James Oliver Curwood lived most of his life in Owosso, Michigan, where he was born on June 12, 1878. His first novel was The Courage of Captain Plum (1908) and he published one or two novels each year thereafter, until his death on August 13, 1927. During the 1920s Curwood became one of America's best selling and most highly paid authors. This was the decade of his lasting classics The Valley of Silent Men (1920) and The Flaming Forest (1921). Book excerpt: Essayist and newspaper columnist Fanny Fern enjoyed a rapid -- and highly unlikely -- rise to fame after an early life beset by tragedy and misfortune. Soon after accepting the position that established her as the highest-paid female writer in the United States, Fern began work on Ruth Hall, a highly autobiographical novel that paralleled her own life experiences in many regards. Today, scholars and critics agree that the novel is an exceptionally well-written exploration of what life as a female literary icon was like in the late nineteenth century.

Book excerpt: “At the time it was first published in 1962, it framed such an urgent appeal to the American conscience that it actually prompted the creation of the Appalachian Regional Commission, an agency that has pumped millions of dollars into Appalachia. Caudill’s study begins in the violence of the Indian wars and ends in the economic despair of the 1950s and 1960s. Two hundred years ago, the Cumberland Plateau was a land of great promise. Its deep, twisting valleys contained rich bottomlands. The surrounding mountains were teeming with game and covered with valuable timber. The people who came into this land scratched out a living by farming, hunting, and making all the things they need-including whiskey. The quality of life in Appalachia declined during the Civil War and Appalachia remained “in a bad way” for the next century. By the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, Appalachia had become an island of poverty in a national sea of plenty and prosperity. Caudill’s book alerted the mainstream world to our problems and their causes. Since then the ARC has provided millions of dollars to strengthen the brick and mortar infrastructure of Appalachia and to help us recover from a century of economic problems that had greatly undermined our quality of life.”-Print ed.

Book excerpt: Assembled from a series of newspaper articles first published in the newspaper *Morning Chronicle* throughout the 1840s, this exhaustively researched, richly detailed survey of the teeming street denizens of London is a work both of groundbreaking sociology and salacious voyeurism. In an 1850 review of the survey, just prior to its initial book publication, William Makepeace Thackeray called it "tale of terror and wonder" offering "a picture of human life so wonderful, so awful, so piteous and pathetic, so exciting and terrible, that readers of romances own they never read anything like to it." Delving into the world of the London "street-folk"-the buyers and sellers of goods, performers, artisans, laborers and others-this extraordinary work inspired the socially conscious fiction of Charles Dickens in the 19th century as well as the urban fantasy of Neil Gaiman in the late 20th. Volume I explores the lives of: the "wandering tribes" costermongers sellers of fish, fruits and vegetables sellers of books and stationery sellers of manufactured goods women and children on the streets and more. English journalist HENRY MAYHEW (1812-1887) was a founder and editor of the satirical magazine *Punch.*

Book excerpt: From a world of daisies as big as moons and of mountainous green hillocks Michael Fane came by some unrealized method of transport to the thin red house, that as yet for his mind could not claim an individual existence amid the uniformity of a long line of fellows. His arrival coincided with a confusion of furniture, with the tramp of men backwards and forwards from a cavernous vehicle very dry and dusty. He found himself continually being lifted out of the way of washstands and skeleton chests of drawers. He was invited to sit down and keep quiet, and almost in the same breath to walk about and avoid hindrance. Finally, Nurse led him up many resonant stairs to the night-nursery which at present consisted of two square cots that with japanned iron bars stood gauntly in a wilderness of oilcloth surrounded by four walls patterned with a prolific vegetation. Michael was dumped down upon a grey pillow and invited to see how well his sister Stella was behaving. Nurse’s observation was true enough: Stella was rosily asleep in an undulation of blankets, and Michael, threatened by many whispers and bony finger-shakes, was not at all inclined to wake her up. Nurse retired in an aura of importance, and Michael set out to establish an intimacy with the various iron bars of his cage. For a grown-up person these would certainly have seemed much more alike than even the houses of Carlington Road, West Kensington: for Michael each bar possessed a personality. Minute scratches unnoticed by the heedless adult world lent variety of expression: slight irregularities infused certain groups with an air of deliberate consultation. From the four corners royal bars, crowned with brass, dominated their subjects. Passions, intrigues, rumours, ambitions, revenges were perceived by Michael to be seething below the rigid exterior of these iron bars: even military operations were sometimes discernible. This cot was guarded by a romantic population, with one or two of whose units Michael could willingly have dispensed: one bar in particular, set very much askew, seemed sly and malignant. Michael disliked being looked at by anybody or anything, and this bar had a persistent inquisitiveness which already worried him. ‘Why does he look at me?’ Michael would presently ask, and ‘Nobody wants to look at such an ugly little boy,’ Nurse would presently reply. So one more intolerable question would overshadow his peace of mind. Meanwhile, far below, the tramp of men continued, until suddenly an immense roar filled the room. Some of the bars shivered and clinked, and Michael’s heart nearly stopped. The roar died away only to be succeeded by another roar from the opposite direction. Stella woke up crying. Michael was too deeply frightened so to soothe himself, as he sat clutching the pointed ears of the grey pillow. Stella, feeling that the fretful tears of a sudden awakening were insufficient, set up a bellow of dismay. Michael was motionless, only aware of a gigantic heart that shook him horribly. At last the footsteps of Nurse could be heard, and over them, the quick ‘tut-tut-tuts’ that voiced her irritation.
