Book excerpt: #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts presents four romantic stories of impossible dreams come true... In Nora Roberts’s “In Dreams,” a beautiful young woman is drawn to a castle in the forests of Ireland and becomes the link to a stranger’s past—and the curse that has trapped him forever in the eternity of his own dreams. In Jill Gregory’s “The Sorcerer’s Daughter,” the fate of a captive wizard depends on his lovely daughter—and the intentions of a spellcast adventurer who dreams of a priceless treasure, and a love that could be the greatest reward of all. In Ruth Ryan Langan’s “The Enchantment,” two strangers seek refuge in an abandoned estate on a storm-swept night—only to discover that their most elusive dreams of romance are as enchanted, and as real, as true love itself. In Marianne Willman’s “The Bridge of Sighs,” an American art appraiser becomes haunted by dreams of a lonely young girl while visiting Venice—a vision that illuminates a tragic past, and a future of endless love.

Book excerpt: There was once a dream, though it wasnt mine but I had it all the same, and I still have it. It is neither a religious vision of doom or blessings, nor a political speech on promises or propaganda; for it is only a dream. You and I are here, and hereafter in this dream, you and I shall be called we, as it would be on planet earth and yes, we are in a dream, a dream-dream, for that is all it is. We or our dreams, at times one cannot tell which is vaguer. The picture of things is not yet clear but we have been made to understand that today is the first of January, in the year F.G. 300. As we must have guessed, the B.C. came and went, so too did the Anno Domini and the new calendar system is already three hundred years old. Yes, we are that far off our present consciousness. The F.G. is an abbreviation for Finem Grati, a lost languages way of saying the end of grace. We feel this language isnt lost because we are still here, dreaming a dream.

Book excerpt: Rachel Lawrence always had a creative imagination. On her 13th birthday she receives some gifts with no senders name that starts her on a mission to find out who sent them. A crystal token that says it will take you anywhere you dreamed to be on it and a journal with someone named Queen Lynnaria on the cover. These gifts somehow put her best friend Nicole and herself standing in the same place she was standing alone in her dream the night before and is told Queen Lynnaria was kidnapped. Was this one of Rachels creative stories or did they really travel to another reality and become heros for saving the Queen? These places seemed familiar to Rachel was she there before or was it because she dreamed of this before? Neither Rachel or Nicole are sure what happened they just say they had the same exact dream and the same exact time is this possible no matter its one birthday that neither one of them will ever forget because this was one heck of a 13th birthday adventure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern, feel-good fairy tale about a woman determined to realize her dreams and the unexpected prince charming who helps her. Summer Welles wants the fairy tale. The illegitimate daughter of Reginald Summerhill, the Earl of Amberlin, she listened to her mother's stories about the Summerhill girls all her life. In her mind, Summer was part of the stories too—living in the castle, wearing fancy dresses, and falling in love with Prince Charming. Her wish came true. Mostly. She lives in the Summerhill mansion. She has stepsisters—nice ones who don't make her clean the chimney. She even has a magical wedding dress waiting for her special day. The only thing missing is the prince. What Summer didn't count on was mistaking a masked frog for her prince. But once she kisses the mysterious man, he won't go away. And he's not charming or princely—he's more interested in ravishing her rather than riding off into the sunset. With her fairy tale at stake, Summer's faced with her own quest: sacrifice her Happily Ever After, or turn her back on the one man who makes her feel alive? It reflects on the importance of our dreams and talks about how various biblical persons were given godly insights through their dreams. The first half of the book tells the story of a dream--a violent dream that involved witnessing a senseless murder as well as a futile chase to escape a dark fate, followed by a joyful celebration of God's amazing goodness! The book then breaks down the dream with the help and discernment of a biblical mentor as well as the use of scripture from God's Holy Word, thereby providing a godly analysis. The second half of the book is a thirty-day dream journal intended for the use of the reader. It provides space for the reader's dreams, interpretations, and insights from others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once Upon a Time There Was a Little Girl shares the moving stories of seven women who as young girls experienced the early loss of their mothers through death or physical or emotional abandonment. The women explore their personal traumas through their responses to seven fairy tales in which there was no nurturing maternal presence. Dr. Marcella Shields is a psychologist with over thirty years of experience who reveals the inspiring journeys of these women who eventually triumph over suffering and learn to rely on the bond they have formed with each other to help reclaim their passion for life. By exploring seven timeless fairy tales in which the heroine finds her way through the grief of abandonment, the women offer a deeper understanding of the significance of the mother-daughter bond and the devastating consequences for the daughter if this bond is ruptured early. The poignant life stories and dreams courageously offered by these women show how fairy tales allowed them to understand and refashion themselves, and provide a source of encouragement and hope for other women who have experienced early maternal loss. Fathers raising daughters without a consistent maternal presence will also find the reflections valuable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fast-paced world of science and technology, we have set ourselves to a never-ending race with time. We’ve lost our capacity to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. We have dulled our senses from appreciating the wild flowers along our way that flaunt their beauty and waft their fragrance on the breeze. We cast our vision hurriedly past the inviting pathways into the deep woods that eagerly entice us to take a moment’s rest. Lest we become robots devoid of feeling, machineries unable to experience bliss, we must elevate ourselves from the mundane to such loftiness of spirit as will enable us to experience and enjoy the true essence of life. This book offers us a sanctuary to rest our weary body and spirit, and its poetry allows us to feel the realities within ourselves—too often missed, yet are far richer than the physical realities around us that are too commonplace and barren to appreciate. The poems tug at the root of our being, awakening the treasures lurking within us—little gems too inspiring to miss and too beautiful to forget. This book is a window into my soul—the anima within me that gives me life. It is the true reality of my existence—more than the reality of my physical being. It is beyond what my intellect can reach and what my emotions can inspire. My poetry, which includes my songs, is the fresh breath of my soul; it is the raw expression of what is at my core, borne in the spur of the moment and perfected by inspiration. It is, therefore, in a spirit of love and absolute trust that I welcome you into this sanctuary of my soul since I render myself bare, naked, and vulnerable as I put you in touch with my true reality, which is devoid of fear, pretenses, inhibitions, as well as self-serving needs or purpose.

Book excerpt: Fun and innovative exercises and prompts for creative writing students Once Upon a Time in the Twenty-First Century: Unexpected Exercises in Creative Writing is a unique creative writing text that will appeal to a wide range of readers and writers—from grade nine through college and beyond. Successful creative writers from numerous genres constructed these exercises, including poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction to one-act plays, song lyrics, genre fiction, travel guides, comics and beyond. The exercises use a broad range of creative approaches, aesthetics, and voices, all with an emphasis on demystifying the writing process and having fun. Editor Robin Behn has divided the book into three writing sections: Genres and Forms, Sources and Methods, and Style and Subject. In each section, Behn offers a brief introduction which explains how to get started and specific ways to develop one’s writing. Each introduction is followed by extensive exercises that draw on literature from classic to contemporary, as well as other art forms and popular culture. Examples range from Flannery O’Connor and Langston Hughes to Allen Ginsberg and Gertrude Stein, from Jamaica Kincaid and James Joyce to Arlo Guthrie and Harryette Mullen. Integrated within the exercises are apt examples of student writings that have emerged from actual use of the exercises in both the classroom and in writing groups. The book concludes with general advice and direction on how to get published. Based on years of hands-on experiences in the teaching of creative writing in high schools, colleges, and after-school writing clubs, this volume of exercises offers inestimable value to students and teachers in the traditional classroom, as well as a growing number of homeschoolers, those who are part of a writing club or group, and independent writers and learners of all ages.

Book excerpt: Not quite four months after the Western Region's election of October 10, 1965, did the localized mayhem in that Region find its way furiously into the center of the nation on January 15, 1966! It was like a whirl-wind of nothing but anarchy and lawlessness. The serious aftermath of the marred and rigged election was that it acted as the last straw that broke the Carmel's back, providing immediate reason for the army to overthrow the government of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. Anarchy ensued; a counter coup led to the death of Major-General Ironsi. Callous barbarous massacre of thousands of easterners in the North followed. With their lives in jeopardy, easterners fled for safety to eastern region; refugee crisis followed. To guarantee their safety, easterners seceded from Nigeria and on May 30th 1967, formed an independent and sovereign nation of the Republic of Biafra. Determined to bring Easterners back, on July 6, 1967 Nigeria invaded Biafra; waged a gruesome thirty-month-civil war against Biafra. Nigeria blockaded Biafra on land, sea and air, to prevent food from entering Biafra. A malnutrition disease, Kwashiorkor that caused the deaths of thousands of Biafrans, followed. Nigeria bombed Biafran civilians, killing thousands. On January 12, 1970 the war ended leaving more than three million people dead in a war that was totally avoidable!
