Book excerpt: Once Upon a Car is the brilliantly reported story of Detroit’s fight for survival, chronicling how the country’s Big Three auto companies—General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler—teetered on the brink of collapse during the 2008 financial crisis. Bill Vlasic takes readers behind closed doors and into the executive offices, assembly plants, and union halls to introduce a cast of memorable characters, many of whom speak out for the first time, including the executives who struggled to save their companies but in the end had to seek a controversial, last-gasp rescue from the American government. The story moves from the gleaming corporate skyscrapers and massive auto plants to the U.S. Congress and into the Oval Office, where President Obama and his aides wrestled with how to keep General Motors and Chrysler from going out of business. Vlasic shows why the bailout worked, and how Detroit can succeed under new leadership and build automobiles equal to any in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the silent era to the present day, popular music has been a key component of the film experience. Yet there has been little serious writing on film soundtracks that feature popular music. Soundtrack Available fills this gap, as its contributors provide detailed analyses of individual films as well as historical overviews of genres, styles of music, and approaches to film scoring. With a cross-cultural emphasis, the contributors focus on movies that use popular songs from a variety of genres, including country, bubble-gum pop, disco, classical, jazz, swing, French cabaret, and showtunes. The films discussed range from silents to musicals, from dramatic and avant-garde films to documentaries in India, France, England, Australia, and the United States. The essays examine both “nondiegetic” music in film—the score playing outside the story space, unheard by the characters, but no less a part of the scene from the perspective of the audience—and “diegetic” music—music incorporated into the shared reality of the story and the audience. They include analyses of music written and performed for films, as well as the now common practice of scoring a film with pre-existing songs. By exploring in detail how musical patterns and structures relate to filmic patterns of narration, character, editing, framing, and mise-en-scene, this volume demonstrates that pop music is a crucial element in the film experience. It also analyzes the life of the soundtrack apart from the film, tracing how popular music circulates and acquires new meanings when it becomes an official soundtrack. Contributors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Journey of Frank Antoine Lewis is the first book of a series that will walk you through the life of an ex-gang member that at fourteen years old shot two young USC students in a blotched Hollywood armed robbery. The journey will outline the contributing factors that caused such a young child to take a path of destruction, drug abuse, gang membership, incarceration, and death. After serving several years in a youth correctional facility, Frank Lewis now serves time teaching in a youth correctional facility. The journey series will walk you through the steps that he took to make the proper changes that are required to make a change in life. The Journey is the heartfelt story of a young man that at ten years old witnessed a horrific murder that traumatized him. With no proper guidance, discipline, or structure, young Frank turned to the local Inglewood, California, street gang for support. After being recruited by a current California death row inmate, Frank become more tunnel-visioned, remorseless, and criminal minded. If you google "Frank Antoine Lewis," you can see that this young man has walked a hard journey and most individuals, statistics, and recidivism rates predicted that he should be in prison today. That is not the case Frank Lewis currently is a two-time college graduate with both an associate's and bachelor's degrees. Frank has overcome the obstacles that many at risk youth face today. The journey is the blueprint to counter the blueprint established by Willie Lynch and his blueprint of slavery. The journey will give young people a hope that no matter how bad today looks if you keep striving for excellence than good things will happen. Frank Lewis has walked the life of a criminal, and it is his passion to assist other young people in their struggle to get back on track. The journey provides that example of a young man that, despite the odds, has risen up from his criminal behavior to make a change in the future generation so that they can see if you strive to accomplish your goals that you can do just that.

Book excerpt: This first major biography of the most romanticized icon in jazz thrillingly recounts his wild ride. From his emergence in the 1950s--when an uncannily beautiful young man from Oklahoma appeard on the West Coast to become, seemingly overnight, the prince of "cool" jazz--until his violent, drug-related death in Amsterdam in 1988, Chet Baker lived a life that has become an American myth. Here, drawing on hundreds of interviews and previously untapped sources, James Gavin gives a hair-raising account of the trumpeter's dark journey.

Book excerpt: Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is a unique lipoprotein that has emerged as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular vascular disease. Data from case control, epigenetic and mendelian randomization studies indicate that people with elevated Lp(a) have a two-fold to four-fold increased risk of cardiovascular events compared to people with low Lp(a) levels. Despite this risk, awareness of Lp(a) is still very low among health care providers. Even cardiologists often overlook Lp(a), in part because Lp(a) is not as well-understood as other risk factors and treatment options are still very limited. This book offers an authoritative and comprehensive overview of Lipoprotein(a). It provides an in-depth review of all aspects of Lp(a), from pathophysiology to metabolism. Chapters offer the reader a contemporary view of the important roles of Lp(a) as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. In addition, this volume discusses the clinical implications of elevated Lp(a) and current and future therapies. Lipoprotein(a) is an essential resource for physicians, medical students, residents, fellows, and allied health professionals in lipidology, cardiology, endocrinology, pharmacotherapy, and health promotion and disease prevention.

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “With the benefit of hindsight and good old-fashioned maturity, [Mimi Alford] writes not just about the secret, but the corrosive effect of keeping that secret. . . . You can’t help liking her, or her elegant and thoroughly good-natured book.”—The Spectator In the summer of 1962, nineteen-year-old Mimi Beardsley arrived in Washington, D.C., to begin an internship in the White House press office. After just three days on the job, the privileged but sheltered young woman was presented to the President himself. Almost immediately, the two began an affair that would continue for the next eighteen months. Emotionally unprepared to counter the President’s charisma and power, Mimi was also ill-equipped to handle the feelings of isolation that would follow as she fell into the double life of a college student who was also the secret lover of the most powerful man in the world. After the President’s assassination in Dallas, she grieved alone, locked her secret away, and tried to start a new life, only to be blindsided by her past. Now, no longer defined by silence or shame, Mimi Alford finally unburdens herself with this unflinchingly honest account of her life and her extremely private moments with a very public man. This paperback edition includes a special Q&A, in which the author reflects on the intense media attention surrounding the book’s initial release. Once Upon a Secret is a moving story of a woman emerging from the shadows to reclaim the truth. “What [Alford] sacrificed in lucre she has more than recovered in credibility and dignity.”—The Washington Times “Compelling . . . a polished voice telling a credible story you can take to the bank.”—Seattle Post-Intelligencer “Explosive . . . searingly candid.”—New York Post
