Book excerpt: This book, and the next two volumes in the series, are perfect for reading to your children. I guarantee that you will find the experience highly enjoyable and your child will be left spellbound and hungry for more! All of the Hodja Stories have a little twist to them, an unexpected or thought provoking view of life. The stories themselves are ancient and have their roots in the Persian Empire of 2500 years ago. They are extremely popular in modern day Turkey and in the Middle East. There are some literal translations about but due to the complex language used they are difficult for young children to appreciate and fully understand. In these books the stories have been re-written in a simple form that Primary age children can understand and relate to but without distorting or watering down the story elements, or essential meaning, in any way. The stories rely on careful thought process and the child s application of lateral thinking to fully understand the hidden message within each story, Each volume contains carefully graded stories. The text for Volumes 2 and 3 has already been completed but I await illustrations drawn by the readers. It was great fun preparing the illustrations in Volume 1 but in later volumes I would like to include pictures drawn by the readers. Inside the volume are details of a competition which all readers are invited to enter. See the Competition page inside for full details! If their picture is chosen for inclusions in Volumes 2 or 3 they will win a free book containing their illustration, signed by the author! Email me at [email protected] for further news and updates on the competition results and more books.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birds Without Wings traces the fortunes of one small community in southwest Turkey (Anatolia) in the early part of the last century—a quirky community in which Christian and Muslim lives and traditions have co-existed peacefully over the centuries and where friendship, even love, has transcended religious differences. But with the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire and the onset of the Great War, the sweep of history has a cataclysmic effect on this peaceful place: The great love of Philothei, a Christian girl of legendary beauty, and Ibrahim, a Muslim shepherd who courts her from near infancy, culminates in tragedy and madness; Two inseparable childhood friends who grow up playing in the hills above the town suddenly find themselves on opposite sides of the bloody struggle; and Rustem Bey, a wealthy landlord, who has an enchanting mistress who is not what she seems. Far away from these small lives, a man of destiny who will come to be known as Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is emerging to create a country from the ruins of an empire. Victory at Gallipoli fails to save the Ottomans from ultimate defeat and, as a new conflict arises, Muslims and Christians struggle to survive, let alone understand, their part in the great tragedy that will reshape the whole region forever.

Book excerpt: The Greek Dream Inspired by Actual Events The novel deals with certain historical subjects: the desperate fate of Greek communists who sought refuge in Eastern Bloc countries after the Greek civil war in 1949, the general atmosphere during the Cold War, the murderous activities of the terrorist organization, November 17 operating in Greece until 2002, which managed to kill the CIA station chief in 1975. This story, inspired by those realities, depicts how tension and moral considerations emerge in the late 1970s as the CIA in Athens joins with Greek officials to track down the terrorists. The principal characters are Barbara Baldwin, an American Embassy wife in Athens, who, as a result of a ski trip to Bulgaria with her children becomes emotionally involved with the fate of a Bulgarian officer and tries to stake out a place for herself as an operative, perhaps putting her child in danger; Ivan Dimitrov, a Bulgarian officer of Greek origin assigned as attache to the Bulgarian Embassy in Athens, who longs for repatriation to Greece or defection to the United States and becomes a target of November 17; Dana Franklin, the CIA station chief accredited to the American Embassy in Athens, who uses Dimitrov as a double agent; and Robert Baldwin (Barbara's husband), the political officer posted to the American Embassy in Athens. Each of these people is in danger of compromising the other by dint of national concerns and sheer personal ambition. The settings, Greece and Bulgaria, fascinating Balkan countries, offer a dramatic context for the themes that develop in the course of the novel.

Wall of Fame : At the beginning of the book is a gallery of famous authors and characters that the child will meet inside. 3. The use of Graphic Organisers, Timelines and Graphic retelling of stories help develop critical thinking and study skills in learners—two vital tools for learning. 4. Based on the NCF, the series guides learners through the seven stages of a brain-based approach to learning i.e. Pre-exposure, Preparation, Initiation & Acquisition, Elaboration, Incubation & memory encoding, verification & Confidence check, celebration & Integration. 5. The 5Ps address the above stages as follows : Ponder: aids the learners in pre-acquisition of concepts by setting the context, while preparing them to read the text with the aid of the glossary and in-text questions. Prepare: immerses the learners into the context and initiates holistic learning. It helps in the acquisition of newer perspectives through task-based activities. Practise: lays out the canvas for the stage of elaboration, in which the learners analyse and evaluate the text while applying their understanding of it. Perfect: aids memory encoding through drilling of vocabulary and grammar topics. It helps with incubation of concepts. Perform: functions as a confidence check for learners and ensures verification of their performative skills. This stage of summing up allows a functional integration of acquired concepts, leading to a celebration of learning. 6. Cross-curricular (CC) links weave references from other subjects through the chapters. 7. Task-Based Learning (TBL) activities present learners with real-life situations within the classroom. 8. Life Skills (LS) are enhanced through challenging texts and value-based concept checking questions (CCQs). 9. Tense Timelines (5-8): On the last page of the book is a graphic representation of Tenses. 10. Full page Illustrations and Double-spreads in lower classes make learning fun and interesting.
