Download or read book The House on Mall Road written by Mohyna Srinivasan and published by Penguin Books India. This book was released on 2010 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'My life was simple: repetitive, predictable. Then the predictability blew away like vapour when the bomb fell.' Seven-year-old Parvati's perfect world came crashing down the night the bomb fell on her house and she lost her mother and grandmother. Her father, an army officer deployed in Kashmir during the '71 war, also went missing that night. Orphaned overnight, Parvati left Ambala Cantt to live with her aunt's family. Now, twenty years later, she has returned to 169, The Mall to exorcize the ghosts of the past. While trying to find out what happened on that fateful night Parvati experiences the familiarity and warmth of life in a small cantonment-impromptu picnics, polo matches, husbands' nights. But she also uncovers deep secrets and a web of lies that will forever alter the course of her life. In The House on Mall Road Mohyna Srinivasan gives us a unique glimpse of life in the army-the hospitality of the people, their kindness and affection, the quaint yet charming traditions that uphold authority and valour while always maintaining respect and camaraderie. Dramatic and riveting, The House on Mall Road is a spellbinding debut novel.
Download or read book Ocean Roads written by James George and published by Huia Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sweeping from New Mexico's desert to Auckland's wild west coast beaches, from the bloodied jungles of Vietnam to the dry valleys of Antarctica, Ocean Roads warms us with desert sun, fills our lungs with salt air, drenches us with jungle rain and chills us with glacial ice. This novell tells the powerful, unnerving story of three generations of a family that has been scarred by war, the horror of the first nuclear detonations, of Nagasaki, of Vietnam. When the formal hostilities end, war carries on in the bodies and hearts and minds of the former combatants, and it provides a bitter legacy. But love grows out of the detritus of conflict, and with love comes and understanding of human limitations, frailty, and the possibilities of trust. Shortlisted for the 2007 Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best Book in the South East Asia and South Pacific region

Book Synopsis Madison, Norridgewock, and Smithfield by : Frank Sleeper
Download or read book Madison, Norridgewock, and Smithfield written by Frank Sleeper and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1998-05-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maine communities of Madison, Norridgewock, and Smithfield all have their own unique ties to the waters on which they were founded. Madison depends on the waterfalls of the Kennebec River, the backbone of central Maine, to support its manufacturing roots. Wool mill operations began in 1881, but soon gave way to the still prosperous paper mill. Norridgewock also rests on the shores of the Kennebec, but lacking the falls it was able to remain true to its name, "quiet place in the river." The town remained so quiet in fact, that it lost its county seat to Skowhegan in 1871. Shoe manufacturing later turned Norridgewock into a booming industrial town. Smithfield lacks the river entirely, but in its place one finds North Pond. The beauty of the area has made it a natural recreation area for the other two towns.

Book excerpt: A murderous senior year kicks off this twist-filled series with “a slickly constructed plot, a bouncy narrative and an abundance of cliffhangers” (Publishers Weekly). The town of Paradiso, California, is abuzz during the lead-up to its annual Peach Blossom Festival. This year, the theme is the 1950s, so the locals are already calling the soon-to-be-named queen, “Peggy Sue” after the Buddy Holly song. The four finalists are all seniors at the high school, with an equal chance of winning the crown—or dying . . . Wealthy and beautiful Lacey Pinkerton is the favorite, since she already rules the school. But her developer father is facing pushback on plans to build a new mall on the endangered scrublands. Activist Raven Cruz has set her mind on becoming an environmental lawyer and desperately needs the full scholarship that comes with being crowned. Kiki De Santis is getting pressured to drop out of the running so her best friend Lacey can win, while April Lovewell is the dark horse. A talented artist, her dream of getting out of Paradiso with her biker boyfriend could come true if she’s named queen. They’re four girls with a lot to win—and lose—but one won’t survive the week. Let the games begin . . .
Download or read book Bali Fungus written by Jack Freestone and published by JASBUS. This book was released on 2022-06-09 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novel based upon the author's experiences traveling and surfing after he quit law in New Zealand, and his relationship with a beautiful photographer. Book 1 of The Great Escape series. "So there we sat in the plush restaurant, served by friendly waiters all dressed in white, as the sun started to set on the Atlantic Ocean through the large windows and we drank Portuguese red wine and talked about our plans and our dreams as happy Portuguese songs played in the background. It seemed right at that moment that the world was indeed our oyster. Cody and I were finally free and in love. We had done it. It was hard to believe we had and I thought back at those times when we were both huddling for warmth back in the Pit and we had first talked and fantasized about Portugal. We ate and drank on and clichés became our friends, as did our reflections in the glass sitting next to us, smiling and toasting back at us."
