Book excerpt: The book "On the Trail of Eagle's Nests" tells the story of the castles and their ruins along the historical route that runs in southern Poland between Kraków and Częstochowa. Most of these castles were built in the 13th century and served to defend the state border. Their picturesque location among limestone cliffs made them difficult to access in the past. The area in which they are located is characterized by limestone cliffs, which are a great attraction for mountaineers. The many caves also make the region a popular tourist destination. The book contains descriptions of 14 historical sites: castles, fortresses and ruins. Among the best known are the Jasna Góra Monastery in Częstochowa and the Wawel Royal Castle in Kraków, both monuments of great importance in Polish national and state history. Others are more or less known, but always interesting. The book presents the rich history of these monuments. Most of them were built in the 13th century and rebuilt in the 17th century. Some were rebuilt, others remained in ruins. Besides the history, we also get to know the interesting places in the surroundings of these monuments. There are natural sights such as caves and rocks, which are conquered by climbers from all over the world. But not only. Interesting places in selected towns and villages are also described. In addition, each object is associated with at least one story or legend, which is also the content of the book. All descriptions are accompanied by appropriate photographs documenting these places. As the author, I can assure you that I have personally visited most of the places presented, often accompanied by a small dog named York Fafik, who in a sense becomes the silent hero of these stories. The descriptions of each place are clearly organized and each is accompanied by my own map and information about the distances between the castles and the time needed to get there. I have tried to give the most important information in this book without going into depth. The aim is to make it easier to hike the red marked Eagle's Nest Trail between Kraków and Częstochowa. There are two versions of the trail. The first, 168 km long, is a hiking trail, while the second is designed for cyclists and is slightly longer. In parts, the route deviates from the hiking trail. The ruins of castles and watchtowers - "Eagle's Nests" - on rocky hills are undoubtedly one of the greatest tourist attractions not only in the Kraków-Częstochowa Jura, but in Poland as a whole. They are certainly an interesting alternative for an active vacation.

Book excerpt: Best Books of the Month: Wall Street Journal, Kirkus Reviews From the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Gulf, a sweeping cultural and natural history of the bald eagle in America. The bald eagle is regal but fearless, a bird you’re not inclined to argue with. For centuries, Americans have celebrated it as “majestic” and “noble,” yet savaged the living bird behind their national symbol as a malicious predator of livestock and, falsely, a snatcher of babies. Taking us from before the nation’s founding through inconceivable resurgences of this enduring all-American species, Jack E. Davis contrasts the age when native peoples lived beside it peacefully with that when others, whether through hunting bounties or DDT pesticides, twice pushed Haliaeetus leucocephalus to the brink of extinction. Filled with spectacular stories of Founding Fathers, rapacious hunters, heroic bird rescuers, and the lives of bald eagles themselves—monogamous creatures, considered among the animal world’s finest parents—The Bald Eagle is a much-awaited cultural and natural history that demonstrates how this bird’s wondrous journey may provide inspiration today, as we grapple with environmental peril on a larger scale.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Sierra Club's 2021 Rachel Carson Award One of Chicago Tribune's Ten Best Books of 2021 Named a Top Ten Best Science Book of 2021 by Booklist and Smithsonian Magazine "At once thoughtful and thought-provoking,” Beloved Beasts tells the story of the modern conservation movement through the lives and ideas of the people who built it, making “a crucial addition to the literature of our troubled time" (Elizabeth Kolbert, author of The Sixth Extinction). In the late nineteenth century, humans came at long last to a devastating realization: their rapidly industrializing and globalizing societies were driving scores of animal species to extinction. In Beloved Beasts, acclaimed science journalist Michelle Nijhuis traces the history of the movement to protect and conserve other forms of life. From early battles to save charismatic species such as the American bison and bald eagle to today’s global effort to defend life on a larger scale, Nijhuis’s “spirited and engaging” account documents “the changes of heart that changed history” (Dan Cryer, Boston Globe). With “urgency, passion, and wit” (Michael Berry, Christian Science Monitor), she describes the vital role of scientists and activists such as Aldo Leopold and Rachel Carson, reveals the origins of vital organizations like the Audubon Society and the World Wildlife Fund, explores current efforts to protect species such as the whooping crane and the black rhinoceros, and confronts the darker side of modern conservation, long shadowed by racism and colonialism. As the destruction of other species continues and the effects of climate change wreak havoc on our world, Beloved Beasts charts the ways conservation is becoming a movement for the protection of all species including our own.

Book excerpt: A strange series of ritual murders in various parts of the world alarms the United States government because of its destabilizing potential in hot areas of the world. Due to the characteristics of the events, the authorities contacted the Bluthund Community, a private organization made up of experts in unconventional disciplines. Certain keys in common to the crimes lead investigators to the trail of the Sect of the Nizaris, created in the Middle Ages in Persia by a mysterious "Old Man of the Mountain", reported by travelers such as Marco Polo and stories from the time of the Crusades. The assassins that formed it had terrified the kingdoms of the Middle Ages of the Near and Middle East. Bluthund investigators travel to the ruins of the mysterious Castle of Alamut, located in present-day Iran. There they find with amazement that the sect is still active and must confront the fearsome assassins who guard their sacred site. A historical thriller that will keep the reader on edge from start to finish.
