Download or read book Altera Roma written by Claire L. Lyons and published by Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press. This book was released on 2016-12-31 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Altera Roma explores the confrontation of two cultures, European and Amerindian, and two empires, Spanish and Aztec. In an age of exploration and conquest, Spanish soldiers, missionaries, and merchants brought an array of cultural preconceptions. Their encounter with Aztec civilization coincided with Europe's rediscovery of classical antiquity, and Tenochtitlan came to be regarded a "second Rome," or altera Roma. Iberia's past as the Roman province of Hispania served to both guide and critique the Spanish overseas mission. The dialogue that emerged between the Old World and the New World shaped a dual heritage into the unique culture of Nueva Espana. In this volume, ten eminent historians and archaeologists examine the analogies between empires widely separated in time and place and consider how monumental art and architecture created "theater states," a strategy that links ancient Rome, Hapsburg Spain, preconquest Mexico, and other imperial regimes.
Book Synopsis Ix Chel Maya Queen of Heaven in the New World by : Douglas T. Peck
Download or read book Ix Chel Maya Queen of Heaven in the New World written by Douglas T. Peck and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-02-28 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: And in this book Colonel Peck reveals the current view of Maya religion is also appallingly inaccurate. The sophisticated Maya religion, which closely followed the pattern of contemporary Eurasian religions, originated in ancient times with a matriarchal “Goddess of Creation” and evolved into a patriarchal “First Father” concept in the Classic period preceding Spanish conquest. Current historians have failed to recognize that fact because of the naïve belief that the writings of colonial period folklore, which picture Maya religious concepts as crude, primitive, and often grotesque fables, represented Maya religion rather than the true, sophisticated, and realistic religious concepts expressed in their prehistoric writing and art as documented in this book.
Book Synopsis Maya Archaeology and Ethnohistory by : Norman Hammond
Download or read book Maya Archaeology and Ethnohistory written by Norman Hammond and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2012-01-11 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embracing a wide range of research, this book offers various views on the intellectual history of Maya archaeology and ethnohistory and the processes operating in the rise and fall of Maya civilization. The fourteen studies were selected from those presented at the Second Cambridge Symposium on Recent Research in Mesoamerican Archaeology and are presented in three major sections. The first of these deals with the application of theory, both anthropological and historical, to the great civilization of the Classic Maya, which flourished in the Yucatan, Guatemala, and Belize during the first millennium A.D. The structural remains of the Classic Period have impressed travelers and archaeologists for over a century, and aspects of the development and decline of this strange and brilliant tropical forest culture are examined here in the light of archaeological research. The second section presents the results of field research ranging from the Highlands of Mexico east to Honduras and north into the Lowland heart of Maya civilization, and iconographic study of excavated material. The third section covers the ethnohistoric approach to archaeology, the conjunction of material and documentary evidence. Early European documents are used to illuminate historic Maya culture. This section includes transcriptions of previously unpublished archival material. Although not formally linked beyond their common field of inquiry, the essays here offer a conspectus of late-twentieth century Maya research and a series of case histories of the work of some of the leading scholars in the field.
